The

CanadianSatelliteDesign

Challenge

Design it.

Build it.

Launch it!

Are you up to the Challenge?

What Is It?The Canadian Satellite Design Challenge(CSDC) is a Canada-wide competition todesign  and  build a small satellite,

approximately 10 kg in mass. The satellites will include one or morepayload instruments which can conductscientific research for their university.

Satellites will undergo full launch andspace environment qualification testing. One or more winning satellites will be

identified as candidates for launch intoorbit.

The competition begins in September,2010, and will run for two academic years. The winner(s) will be announced in May,2012.

Who Can Participate? The Challenge is open to teams ofundergraduate students from universitiesand technical colleges.

Several Canadian space companies are

participating by providing their experienceand expertise to teams.

The CSDC is also seeking  donors andsponsors to help enable the programmeto achieve all of its goals, and companieswhich manufacture suitable componentsfor the satellites. Please contact us for

more information.

Structure & Schedule

The CSDC is modelled after otheruniversity-level engineering designcompetitions (e.g., space elevator, solarcar, super-mileage car).

In the first year, students will learn aboutsatellite sub-systems and design, and

begin initial concepts of their satellites.Teams will progress through an iterativedesign process as in a real spacecraftprogramme.

Following a final design review, teams willproceed with assembly, integration, andfunctional testing of their sub-system

components and assembled satellite.Satellites which are fully functional andcompliant with all requirements of theChallenge will undergo launch and spaceenvironment qualification testing.

One or more winning satellites will beidentified as candidates for launch into

orbit.
