Quick Start GuideFollow these steps for a quick start with your camera.

Attach the strap.

Charge the battery.

Insert the battery.

Attach a lens.Rotate the lens until it clicks into place.

Quick Start Guide

Insert a Secure Digital (SD) memory card.Holding the memory card as shown at right, slide it in until it clicks into place. The memory card access lamp will light for a few seconds. Close the memory card slot cover.

Turn the camera on.

Choose a language and set the clock.A language-selection dialog will be displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the camera clock.

Press 1 or 3 to highlight a language, J to select.

Press 4 or 2 to highlight your local time zone, J to select.

Press 1 or 3 to highlight a date format, J to select.

If daylight saving time is in effect, highlight On and press J; select Off if standard time is in effect.

Press 4 or 2 to highlight items, 1 or 3 to change. Press J to set the clock and exit to shooting mode.

Quick Start Guide

Format the memory card.Hold the Q (O and Z) buttons down simultaneously for approximately two seconds. A blinking C will appear in the shutter-speed displays in the control panel and viewfinder; press the Q buttons again while the display is blinking to format the memory card.

Adjust viewfinder focus.Rotate the diopter control until the viewfinder display and focus points are in sharp focus. When operating the diopter control with your eye to the viewfinder, be careful not to put your fingers or fingernails in your eye.

Select i mode.

Select autofocus.Rotate the focus-mode selector to AF (autofocus).

Ready the camera.When framing photographs in the viewfinder, hold the handgrip in your right hand and cradle the camera body or lens with your left. Keep your elbows propped lightly against your torso for support and place one foot half a pace ahead of the other to keep your upper body stable.

Quick Start Guide

Frame the photograph.Frame a photograph in the viewfinder with the main subject in at least one of the eleven focus points.

Focus and shoot.Press the shutter-release button halfway to focus, then press it the rest of the way down to take the photograph.

If additional lighting is required for correct exposure in i mode, the built-in flash will pop up automatically when the shutter-release is pressed halfway. Once the flash is raised, it will only fire when required for additional lighting.

View pictures.At default settings, photos are displayed for about 4 s after shooting (if no photograph is displayed, the monitor, the most recent picture can be viewed by pressing the K button). Additional pictures can be displayed by pressing 4 or 2. To view additional photo information as described on page 129 of the User’s Manual, press 1 and 3.

To end playback and return to shooting mode, press the shutter-release button halfway.

Delete photographs.To delete the photograph currently displayed in the monitor, press the O button again to delete the image and return to playback. To exit without deleting the picture, press K.

Connecting a PrinterThe camera can be connected to a PictBridge-compatible printer and JPEG images printed directly from the camera. Follow the steps below to print selected pictures one at a time. For more information, see page 150 of User’s Manual.

Turn the camera off.

Connect the USB cable.Turn the printer on and connect the USB cable as shown. Do not use force or attempt to insert the connectors at an angle.

Turn the camera on.A welcome screen will be displayed in the monitor, followed by a PictBridge playback display.

Select a picture.Press 4 or 2 to view additional pictures, or press the X button to zoom in on the current frame (press K to exit zoom). To view six pictures at a time, press the W button. Use the multi selector to highlight pictures, or press X to display the highlighted picture full frame.

Press J.PictBridge printing options will be displayed. Press 1 or 3 to highlight an option and press 2 to display options for the selected menu item. Press J to select and return to previous menu.

Connecting a Printer

Start printing.Select Start printing and press J to start printing. The PictBridge playback screen shown in Step 4 will be displayed when printing is complete. To cancel before all copies have been printed, press J.

Copying Pictures to a ComputerThe camera can be connected to a computer and pictures copied using the supplied software.Before Connecting the CameraBefore connecting the camera, install the software on the supplied Software Suite CD (see the Install Guide for more information). Supplied SoftwareNikon Transfer is used to copy photographs from the camera to the computer, where they can be viewed using ViewNX (Nikon Transfer can also be used to back up photographs and embed information in photographs as they are transferred, while ViewNX can be used to sort photographs, convert images to different file formats, and perform simple editing on NEF (RAW) photographs).

Supported Operating SystemsThe camera can be connected to a computer running the following operating systems:• Windows: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (32-bit Home

Basic/Home Premium/ Business/Enterprise/Ultimate) and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Home Edition/ Professional). Users of Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 can transfer pictures by inserting the camera memory card in a card reader or card slot.

• Macintosh: Mac OS X (version 10.3.9, 10.4.11, or 10.5.3)

Copying Pictures to a Computer

Turn the camera off.Turn the camera off and confirm that a memory card is inserted.

Connect the USB cable.Turn the computer on and connect the supplied UC-E4 USB cable as shown. Do not use force or attempt to insert the connectors at an angle. Connect the camera directly to the computer; do not connect the cable via a USB hub or keyboard.

Turn the camera on.Windows Vista: If an AutoPlay dialog is displayed, click Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Nikon Transfer to start Nikon Transfer. To skip the AutoPlay dialog in future, select Always do this for this device before clicking the “copy pictures…” option.Windows XP: If an AutoPlay dialog is displayed, select Nikon Transfer Copy pictures to a folder on my computer and click OK to start Nikon Transfer. To skip the AutoPlay dialog in future, select Always use this program for this action before clicking OK.Macintosh: Nikon Transfer will start automatically if Yes was selected in the Auto-Launch setting dialog when Nikon Transfer was first installed.

Confirm that the camera is connected.Confirm that the camera is displayed in the transfer options “Source” panel. If the camera is not displayed, check that the camera is on and connected to the computer.

Copying Pictures to a Computer

Click Start Transfer.At default settings, all new pictures on the camera memory card will be transferred. When transfer is complete, pictures will be displayed in ViewNX.

ViewNXViewNX is used to view photographs after they have been transferred to the computer. ViewNX can also be started by:• Windows: Double-clicking the ViewNX shortcut on the

desktop.• Macintosh: Clicking the ViewNX icon in the Dock.

Online HelpTo view online help, start Nikon Transfer or ViewNX and select the appropriate option from the Help menu.

ViewNXViewNX can be used to sort photographs, convert images to different file formats, and perform simple editing on NEF (RAW) photographs.

palettes.• Folders: Navigate the folder tree.• Metadata: View information (including XMP/IPTC data)

nClose up: Take vivid close-ups of flowers, insects, and other small objects.

m Sports: Freeze motion for dynamic sports shots.

oNight portrait: Shoot portraits against a dimly-lit backdrop. Use of a tripod is recommended to prevent blur when lighting is poor.

Using the Built-in FlashIf additional lighting is required for correct exposure in i, k, n, and o modes, the built-in flash will pop up automatically when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. In P, S, A, and M modes, press the M button to raise the flash. Remove lens hoods when the flash is raised.

If the flash is raised, pictures can only be taken when the flash-ready indicator (M) is displayed. If the flash-ready indicator is not displayed, the flash is charging; remove your finger briefly from the shutter-release button and try again. To save power when the flash is not in use, press it gently downward until the latch clicks into place.

Live View

Press the a button.The mirror will be raised and the view through the lens will be displayed in the camera monitor. The subject will no longer be visible in the viewfinder.

Choose an autofocus mode.Press the B button and rotate the command dial until one of the following autofocus modes is displayed in the monitor (note that these autofocus modes differ from those available in other shooting modes):

8 Face priorityThe camera automatically detects and focuses on portrait subjects facing the camera.

Check the view in the monitor.To magnify the view in the monitor and check focus, press the X button. Press the W button to zoom out.

Live View

Face-priority autofocus: A double yellow border will be displayed when the camera detects a portrait subject facing the camera (if multiple faces, up to a maximum of five, are detected, the camera will focus on the closest subject). The camera automatically sets focus and exposure for the subject indicated by the double yellow border. If the camera can no longer detect the subject (because, for example, the subject has looked away), borders will no longer be displayed.

Focus.In wide and normal autofocus, the camera will focus while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. In face-priority autofocus, the camera will focus on the face in the double yellow border while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. The focus point will blink green and the monitor may brighten or darken while the camera focuses. If the camera is able to focus, the focus point will be displayed in green; if the camera is unable to focus, the focus point will blink red. Note that pictures can be taken even when the focus point blinks red, and that single-servo autofocus is used regardless of the option selected for autofocus mode. Check focus in the monitor before shooting.

Take the picture.Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take pictures in the current release mode. The monitor will turn off. When shooting is complete, the photograph will be displayed in the monitor for 4 s or until the shutter-release button is pressed halfway.

Picture ControlsIn P, S, A, and M modes, you can quickly select the final look for your photographs by choosing a pre-existing Nikon Picture Control from the Picture Control menu, or make separate detailed adjustments to individual Picture Control settings. Press the G button and select Picture Control in the shooting menu.

Guides and TipsHelpIf a Q icon is displayed at the bottom left corner of the monitor, help can be displayed by pressing the L button.

Formatting Memory CardsHold the Q (Z and O) buttons until a blinking C appears in the viewfinder and control panel. Pressing the Q buttons again while the C indicator is blinking will format the memory card. Be sure to copy any photographs and other data you wish to keep to a computer before proceeding. Memory cards can also be formatted in the setup menu (pg. 52).

Two-Button Reset: Restoring Default SettingsCamera settings can be restored to default values by holding the B and E buttons down together for more than two seconds (these buttons are marked by a green dot). Custom Settings are not affected.
