The FAST Suite
• FAST Cache continuously ensures that the hottest data is served from high performance FLASH SSDs
• FAST VP (Virtual Pools)* optimizes storage pools automatically, ensuring that active data is being served from SSDs, while cold data is moved to lower cost disk tiers
• Together they deliver a fully automated FLASH 1st storage strategy for optimal performance at the lowest cost attainable
• Monitor and Tune the whole system with the complementary Unisphere QoS Manager and Unisphere Analyzer
• FLASH 1st strategy enabler
* Not available for VNX5100.

UIM - Automated Infrastructure provisioning into vCenter
• Provision hardware infrastructure as a service with service offering templates
• Accelerate time to deployment with pre-configured automation workflows
• Manage and monitor multiple Vblock systems with a single instance
• Reduce pt-2-pt integration with open RESTful API

EMC now has ONE vCenter Plug-in to do it all: Virtual Storage Integrator (VSI)
• VSI feature menu structure

VM-Aware Unisphere • Automatic
discovery of virtual machines and ESX servers
• End-to-end virtual-to-physical mapping
• Automated virtual infrastructure reporting
31 © Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved.
Thin Provisioning Stun • Thin Provisioning allows storage
to leave out some details… • It’s not intended maliciously, but it
can cause problems if the apps or VMs call storage’s bluff
• With Thin Provisioning Stun activated, ESX is aware that it’s using thin storage and can auto-suspend a VM that would have failed due to an out-of-space error
– When space is available, normal function can resume where it left off

VAAI Dead Space Reclamation • Dead space is previously
written blocks that are no longer used by the VM
• Problem: Dead blocks created during VM lifecycle (snapshotting, power off, Storage vMotion, VM deletion, etc.)
• Solution: vSphere conveys block liveness information to storage system via vStorage API channels, storage system reclaims dead blocks
• Storage vMotion, VM deletion, swap file deletion can trigger the thin LUN to free some physical space

vStorage API for Multi-pathing • I/O from a vSphere cluster
appears as random to storage and data paths can be complex to manage
• PowerPath/VE creates a single pool of connectivity
– Simple, predictable, consistent
– Improved fault tolerance – Dynamic load balancing
