The Smart, Sustainable Commuting OptionJuly 8, 2015

Presenter: Rick MacNeal – Regional Outreach

Commuter Vanpool Program

Vanpools function like carpools except:

17

• Vanpools by law must seat 7 (or more) passengers. Groups can be comprised of 5-15 people

• Considered an Alternative Transportation option –vanpools are eligible for local or federal subsidies

• No one uses their own vehicle – no personal wear & tear• All drivers’ records are checked to insure they have a history

of safe vehicle operation• Vanpools carry commercial insurance with a zero deductible

and participants save on personal insurance• With costs shared by larger group size, individual costs are

considerably lower

Where Do Car/Vanpools Fit In?

18

• Fixed schedule public transportation options not

suitable• Commute path is not compatible with fixed transit

• Transit schedule not conducive to work schedule

• Requires too much extra commute time

• Best for daily commutes of 15 miles or more

Little Ditty About Jack and Dianne

and…

20

Betty Phyllis

Marie

and Sam

21

Dianne lives in Oro Valley but works in Vail at the U of A Tech Park

Driving alone, she began thinking about this whole “shared economy” thing

22

At work she noticed a few Sun Rideshare vans in the parking lot

And got curious

23

She searched online and foundwww.sunridesharevanpool.com

Where she was able to post her commute & receive a personalized quote

24

Wow! When she received her quote, she realized by sharing costs, she could spend less than she now pays for gas alone as a single occupant

commuter; with no wear & tear on her own car

By sharing with just five other people each would pay$80 a month for their share of the lease & gas, versus the $129

Dianne now pays just for gas

25

Although Dianne’s company only has 40 employees she knows the Tech Park has

thousands of commuters

Armed with her commute posted with Sun Rideshare and vRide and knowledge of ridesharing costs from her area, she began spreading the word through her social media

& on the Tech Park campus

26

Betty Phyllis

Marie

and Sam

That’s how Dianne found out all these folks live near her and commute to the same vicinity

27

Now they all ride comfortably in a new Chevy Traverse

Thanks to Sun Rideshare’s subsidy incentive each is spending about $0.06 a mile to commute

28

Versus what AAA’s 2015 cost of driving survey calculates as one’s true “all inclusive” driving costs

by vehicle size

Annual savings? For Dianne it’s over $6,800 a year and her car gets 25 miles per gallon, for others the

savings are even greater!

29

Now you know why Jack and Dianne

and…

30

Betty Phyllis

Marie

and Sam

And all these folks are smiling

The moral of the story?

31

• Urge your colleagues to learn more about ridesharing at www.sunridesharevanpool.com

• It costs nothing• We don’t solicit• We only contact those who want a quote or we’ve matched

with others for car or vanpools• You never know how many neighbors work close to you.

Collectively, you could be saving thousands on your annual commute costs
