FUTURE OF UX

FUTURE OF UX

AGENDA‣ I’ll talk quickly about interface history ‣ A bit about the present in cutting edge UX ‣ Activity ‣ “Internet of things” background and demo ‣ A bit about wearables ‣ Another activity

FUTURE OF UX

LEARNING OBJECTIVES‣ Describe the future of technology and User Experience ‣ Cover why it’s important ‣ Learn to make the future awesome

FUTURE OF UX

DENNIS WIXON: NUI PRINCIPLES

‣ Joy of Doing: make the actions fun ‣ Direct Manipulation: manipulate content, not buttons ‣ Intuitive and Joyful: as close to “natural” as you can get ‣ Responsive to Environment: can adapt as necessary ‣ Hyperreal/Magic: beyond expectations ‣ Social: open to multiple users ‣ Spatial: uses physical space

FUTURE OF UX: NATURAL INTERFACES

VOICE INTERFACES

FUTURE OF UX

OPPORTUNITIES‣ Voice inputs solve for environments that necessitate full attention

(driving a car) ‣ Voice interfaces can make complicated interactions easier (e.g.,

complex searches) ‣ Also works for simple interactions like setting reminders, checking

the weather, etc. ‣ Can allow for better multitasking

FUTURE OF UX

DRAWBACKS‣ Voice recognition technology is still not advanced enough to make it

practical ‣ Many inputs are private (dictating personal emails) ‣ Social norms around talking to your phone are still unclear

FUTURE OF UX

GESTURE INTERFACES

FUTURE OF UX

OPPORTUNITIES‣ Touch devices have introduced gestures into the mainstream ‣ Great for games, Virtual Reality ‣ Decreases the amount of mediation between user and content

FUTURE OF UX

DRAWBACKS‣ Practical applications are not apparent for much of the technology ‣ Many current conceptions of gestural interfaces are driven by

Hollywood (Ironman, Minority Report), which depicts impractical situations

‣ It has not yet been demonstrated that gesture interfaces beyond touch screens have real world use cases

IOT & WEARABLES: WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological revolution that represents the future of computing and communications.

—MIT Auto-ID Lab, RFID Inventors

IOT & WEARABLES: WHY DOES IT MATTER?

We are already churning out more than a billion new smartphones every year and in all likelihood we will soon be faced with the task of managing more than 100 billion connected devices sometime in the next decade or so.

—Paul Brody, IBM IoT Architect

NEW PROTOCOLS!There are slightly less than 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses, while IPv6 provides

2^128 (≈3.4 e+38) Basically infinite IPs

For the number of square feet on the earth

0.000000783IPv4

6.192 e+22IPv6

IOT & WEARABLES: WHY DOES IT MATTER?

WEARABLES, NEW TO THE WORLD

“the medium is the message”

The watch is most personal product that Apple has ever made…

—Jonathan Ive, Chief Design Officer

Well maybe not quite…

WEARABLESbut why are they wicked important??

6,352 APPLE WATCH APPS The watch launched with around 3,000 apps, making for

a growth rate of 108% in total apps since launch Cult of Mac -June 8, 2015

5 MILLION WATCHES SOLD… since it went on the market 8 weeks ago

eQ: WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

A: BECAUSE THEY’RE HERE (TO STAY)

WEARABLES & IOT: WHY DOES IT MATTER?

WEARABLES, BIG AND WILL GET HUGE

4,700,000!

Red quarters are straight bananas.

4,700,000

Green quarters designates first quarter sales (1 Oct – 31 Dec).

FUTURE OF UX

OPPORTUNITIES‣ Lots of low hanging fruit for Applications/Complications (Release to

developers coming “Fall” of this year) ‣ Growing user base of wealthy consumers/early adopters. Sales sticking

at about 20,000 watches per day ‣ Might be the first step in computer augmented humanity ‣ Applications and implications widely unknown

FUTURE OF UX

DRAWBACKS‣ Pricy - Still too expensive and many of the features are simply a luxury

and not an indispensable tool like a phone ‣ A few sweet APIs are still closed and likely will be for a while (including

heart monitor) means Apple will keep stay top apps available for a bit ‣ Text input is not exactly discreet ‣ Need an iPhone to use it
