Writing the Introductio

n

Put the following notes on page 60 of your notebook.

Title it, “Introduction Notes”

**Don’t forget to update your Table of Contents!

Introduction

Notes

• A good introduction is essential to a successful essay.

• A perfect introduction has three parts:

– The Attention Grabber– Limited Background

Information– 3 Part Thesis Statement

Introduction

Notes

• An attention-grabber can be an anecdote, a famous quotation, or an interesting statement that will draw your reader in.

• For example:– Every teacher encounters

that one special class that he or she will remember for a lifetime.

Introduction

Notes

• The key word here is “limited.” Give your reader some background, but don’t overdo it!

• If you are writing about a book, include the name of the book and the author’s name.

• For example:• Although the teachers at

TechBoston Academy encounter many excellent classes, Ms. Park has found a truly unique group in her 10th grade English class.

Limited Background Information

Introduction

Notes

Reword the question (Why is Ms. Park’s English 10 class the best?) to create the beginning of your thesis statement, then add the three topics you will be discussing in your body paragraphs:

Ms. Park’s English 10 class is the best English class at TBA because they are eager to learn, are passionate about their opinions, and offer unique insights about the literature read in class.

3 Part Thesis Statement

Introduction

Notes

Every teacher encounters that one special class that he or she will remember for a lifetime. Although the teachers at TechBoston Academy encounter many excellent classes, Ms. Park has found a truly special group in her 10th grade English class. Ms. Park’s English 10 class is the best English class at TBA because they are eager to learn, are passionate about their opinions, and offer unique insights about the literature read in class.

Add it all together …

Homework

Write an introduction paragraph for your essay. It is due tomorrow, no exceptions!

I would prefer it typed and double spaced. If you hand write it, make sure you only write on every other line.

You have the rest of the period to …

Finish your outlines. Your FINAL outline is due to my email by the end of the day TODAY.

If your outline is finished and pending edits, you should begin writing your introduction paragraph now.
