With a population of 9.2 million, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere

Ranking it 155th out of 180 nations, according to the United Nations Development Program Report of 2009

It is estimated that about half of that 9.2 million is illiterate

Its high infant mortality rate ranks it 36th out of 224 nations

A third of all children die before their 5th birthday

Most of Haiti’s population is moderately malnourished

Life expectancy at birth is 61, ranking it 180 out of 224 nations

2/3 of the labor force do not have formal jobsMost Haitians live on less than 2$/day

80 percent of the population is under the poverty line (54 percent in Abject Poverty)

7.0 magnitude earthquake hits the 10 miles west of Port-Au-Prince

3 million people in need of emergency medical aid
