History of Radio

The history of radio can be traced through the lives of these people:

– Maxwell – Hertz – Marconi

James Clerk Maxwell 1831-1879

Electric and MagneticTheory

• Theorized that light was an electromagnetic wave.

Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894)

Experimentally verified Maxwell’s Theories.

Generated and propagated “radio waves ”

Built first transmitter, antenna, and receiver apparatus

Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937)

The italian “inventor of radio”. Improved and commercialized Hertz’

apparatus. Used for radio telegraphy

1895: MARCONI'S INVENTION

 1895- sent and received his first radio signal in Italy

1899 - flashed the first wireless signal across the English Channel

This was the first successful transatlantic radiotelegraph message in 1902.

Edwin H. Armstrong (1890-1954)

Inventor of the: – feedback amplifier – electronic oscillator – super-heterodyne receiver – FM radio

• His inventions allowed for the transmission of voice and music

First portable radio

 Arthur Atwater Kent 1920

• Arthur Atwater Kent, Sr. (1873–1949) American inventor and prominent radio manufacturer based in Philadepia.

• In 1921, he patented the modern form of the automobile ignition coil.

 1921- produced his first radio components, selling the do-it-yourself kits consisting of "breadboards" that could be assembled by early radio enthusiasts.

In 1925, the Atwater Kent Manufacturing Company became the largest maker of radios in the United States.

ANCIENT ITALY The Etruscans- First civilization in Italy 800bc

- influenced by the Greeks, with whom they traded.- 750 BC the Greeks established a colony on the

island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. - founded colonies on mainland Italy such as

Reggio Calabria.

March 17, 1861 - The Italy of modern time became a nation-state

Rome itself remained for a decade under the Papacy, and became part of the Kingdom of Italy only on September 20, 1870

GOVERNMENT

Monarchy- 19th century

headed by a President who appoints a Prime Minister, the elected head of government. 

 1948- constitution established a bicameral parliament

RELIGION

Italy is a Christian country

CULTURE

well-known for its art, culture, and several monuments

food (pizza, pasta, etc.), wine, lifestyle, elegance, design, cinema, theatre, literature, poetry, visual arts, music (notably Opera), holidays, and generally speaking, for taste. 

architecture contributed by giants such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello, Botticelli, Fra Angelico, and Michelangelo.
