FINDING THE EMPIRICAL FORMULA
BY MICHAEL XIOUROUPPAS 5A
Procedure :
You are using the first person please use passive voice.
1)we had to heat our crucible for 5 mins
2)we weighted our crucible after it cooled down with the lid and with no magnesium
3)We weighted our crucible again with the lid but with the magnesium this time
4)We had to heat our crucible again with the magnesium and the lid for 15 mins
5)After it cooled down we weighted the crucible wrote down our results that are shown below
Item Mass/g(0.01)
Empty crucible+ lid 21.62
Crucible + lid + Mg before heating 21.86
Crucible+ lid + Mg heated 22.02
Observations : smoke coming out of the crucible while heating with the Mg also white light
when I opened the lid just to check if it was ready.
moles of Mg =
=0.009Mg
Mr of Mg = 24.31
Element Mass/g (0.02) Moles
Magnesium 21.86-21.62
=
Oxygen 22.02-21.86
=
Ratio we have is 1:1
The equation we get in the end is Mg + O2 =MgO
we have to balance it and we get 2Mg +O2 =2MgO
Conclusion: For the result to be right we had to have a ratio of 1:1 with the experiment that we
did with the magnesium hopefully I found 0.24 that was the magnesium and I found the oxygen
to be 0.16 that made my experiment I got it right and found 1:1 ratio.

Materials : we use our protecting goggles and we use a Bunsen burner and a tripod so we can
put our crucible on it.
Evaluation : I had no problems with my experiment as it seems I got the results I was looking for
but if there was a problem and my products had bonded with nitrogen I had heat the products
in my crucible with water so ammonia would dissolve and then start the procedure from the
start to get the results I would want.
