L’ ERBARIO MONETI
artistiche possedute dagli intellettuali locali; Ridolfino fu archeologo
botanica, di farne conoscere l’attività insieme all’abate Moneti, oltre
Metelliano. Nel 1754, al momento della fondazione della Società
Botanica cortonese, Moneti ne viene nominato direttore e l’anno
successivo entra a far parte dell’Accademia Etrusca.
Esso comprende in tutto 338 figure relative a 313 specie.
rare dalle mutate tecniche agronomiche.
L’ HERBIER MONETI
hollandais Nikolaus Joseph Von Jacquin.
L’ABBE’ MATTIA MONETI
de Sant’Angelo in Metelliano.
THE MONETI HERBARIUM
THE 18th CENTURY IN CORTONA
The Accademia Etrusca was founded in 1728 in Cortona, it was a
cultural institution whose aim was to study archaeology but also
natural and scientific topics. In particular, the Venuti family
stimulated the cultural life of Cortona in the 18th century. For
example Niccolò Marcello Venuti promoted the “Notti Coritane”
(Coritane Nights). They were meetings where arts and literary
works owned by local artists were divulged. Ridolfino Venuti was an
archaeologist and his brother Niccolò Marcello is famous for being
one of the first archaeologist and divulgators of the findings of
Ercolano, near Naples. The other brother Filippo was in France from
1739 to 1750; he partecipated in the activities promoted by the
Enlightenement movement. As for the botanic society, he spread its
activity together with abbot Mattia Moneti and collaborated with the
Dutch botamist Nikolaus Joseph Von Jacquin.
THE ABBOT MATTIA MONETI
He was born in Cortona in 1687 and in 1711 he was ordered priest.
In 1745 he became head of the country parish of Sant’ Angelo in
Metelliano. He was appointed director of the botanic society of
Cortona and the following year he entered the Accademia Etrusca.
He died in 1758 in Sant’ Angelo and was buried there in the local
cemetery. Records of his activity remain in his illustrated books of
plants that he himself drew. These books are kept in the library of
Cortona.
THE HERBARIUM
Mattia Moneti’s passion for herbs and plants was born when his
doctor prescribed him a plant as remedy for a illness. He himself
went to look for it. It grew in the Cappuccini wood near Cortona.
His passion for the collection and the cataloguing of herbs and
plants started since then. The herbarium was drawn in three hard-
covered volumes published in 1732, 1738 and 1755. It includes 338
pictures of 313 species. The tempera drawn plants are recognizable
thanks to details that reveal the botanic knowledge of the author.
The pictures usually cover a whole page. The corresponding name
was written under the picture along with the location and
sometimes also with a brief comment. The plants are common
plants and still today we can find them in this area. You can also
find aquatic plants . These plants are very rare or they disappeared
because of the drainage of the Valdichiana area. Other infesting
plants became rare after the change in the agronomic techniques.
