In memóriám Dr. Vera Csapody (1890—1985)

O n the n igh t o f 6 t h N o v e m b e r , 1 9 8 5 the ou t s t and ing representat ive o f H u n g a r i a n bo tan i ca l i l l u s t r a t i o n , V E R A C S A P O D Y passed away. She was b o r n i n 1 8 9 0 i n Budapest , i n t o a f a m i l y o f doctors a n d ar t is ts . H e r fa ther was a w e l l - k n o w n eyespecialist a n d a n exper t o n n a t u r a l sciences at the same t ime . H e r m o t h e r was the daughter o f the composer G É Z A A L L A G A . A S the eldest o f eight c h i l d r e n , she was first taught by a governess. She m a t r i ­cu la ted f r o m a state secondary school w i t h excellent marks ( 1 9 0 8 ) . T h e same year she entered the P é t e r P á z m á n y U n i v e r s i t y o f Budapest , becoming one o f the first female s tu-

dents ever a d m i t t e d to a u n i v e r s i t y i n H u n g a r y . She graduated w i t h r emarkab le success a n d was i m m e d i a t e l y offered the poss ib i l i ty o f beg inning her d o c t o r a l d isser ta t ion o n electrophoresis at the depar tment o f physics. D r a m a t i c changes happened i n her l i f e w h e n her father unexpectedly d ied i n 1912 and she h a d t o shoulder a l l the burdens o f ra is ing he r seven sisters a n d brothers . She gave u p her scientif ic carr ier a n d s tar ted a new professi­o n , teaching. F i r s t she w o r k e d as a n assistant teacher i n a boys ' school a n d f r o m 1916 she was a teacher o f the S o p h i a n u m , the educa t iona l establ ishment o f the S a c r é Coeur In s t i t u t e . I n 1938, in r e c o g n i t i o n o f her p i o n e e r i n g teaching me thods a n d educa t iona l achievements, she w a s p r o m o t e d t o head o f the i n s t i t u t i o n . I n 1948 the S o p h i a n u m was secularized a n d V E R A C S A P O D Y was dismissed, cous ing a break i n the c o n t i n u i t y o f he r employee r igh t s . W e s h o u l d add t ha t V E R A C S A P O D Y was n o t a passive m e m b e r o f socie ty; a l l her bo t an i ca l a n d educa t iona l pub l ica t ions ref lected her p h i l a n t h r o p y and l o v e o f w o r k f r o m a re l ig ious aspect, w h i c h i n those days d i d n o t accord w i t h the requi rements o f her j o b at the t imes . L o o k i n g f o r a so lu t ion , she t u r n e d to one o f her earlier f r iends S Á N D O R J Á V O R R A , the subsequent d i r ec to r o f the B o t a n i c a l D e p a r t m e n t o f the H u n g a r i a n N a t i o n a l M u s e u m , a p p l y i n g f o r a j o b as a b o t a n i c a l i l l u s t r a to r . She was n o t o n l y accepted, bu t t rea ted as a h i g h l y respected colleague. H o w c o u l d a teacher o f mathemat ics a n d physics become a successful b o t a n i c a l i l l u s t r a to r ?

T h e s tory goes back t o 1912, w h e n she spent a happy h o l i d a y w i t h her grandfa ther i n the coun t ry . T h e r e she d iscovered the beauty a n d var ie ty o f the p l a n t w o r l d ; a n i n s p i r i n g t h o u g h t came i n t o her m i n d : " h o w w o n d e r f u l a n d useful i t w o u l d be t o paint a l l the plants nat ive to H u n g a r y , to capture t h e m i n shape a n d c o l o u r " ! T u r n i n g t o her f o r m e r school teacher f o r advice o n h o w t o co l lec t and iden t i fy p lants , she received a n iden t i f i ca t ion b o o k , p rac t ica l ly the o n l y re la t ive ly comprehensive a n d u p to date w o r k at that t ime , the " S h o r t iden t i f i ca t ion m a n u a l " o f C S E R E Y . Be ing a teacher, d u r i n g her l o n g h o l i d a y she c o u l d take co l l e c t i ng t r i p s a l l over the c o u n t r y t o paint the flowers i n the i r n a t u r a l habitats . T h e F i r s t W o r l d W a r i n t e r r u p t e d her a c t i v i t y as an i l l u s t r a to r . She cared f o r w o u n d e d soldiers as a vo lunteer nurse f o r some years. B u t she d i d n o t give up , a n d her co l l e c t i on grew t o be­c o m e m o r e comprehensive. T h a n k s to the idea o f t hen d i rec to r o f the S o p h i a n u m , she was able t o show her w o r k s i n a n e x h i b i t i o n he ld i n the b u i l d i n g o f the school . A t the open ing she met S Á N D O R J Á V O R R A , scient if ic officer a n d f u t u r e d i rec tor o f the B o t a n i c a l D e p a r t m e n t o f the H u n g a r i a n N a t i o n a l M u s e u m , the ins t i tu te w h i c h was the predecessor o f the present B o t a n i c a l D e p a r t m e n t o f t h e H u n g a r i a n N a t u r a l H i s t o r y M u s e u m . H e was l o o k i n g f o r someone t o i l lus t ra te his a l r eady comple ted iden t i f i ca t ion m a n u a l (28, 29), w h i c h was to embrace a l l species o f the H u n g a r i a n flora. T h e acquaintance t u r n e d in to a co-opera t ing f r iendship l a s t i ng f o r 40 years u n t i l the death o f S Á N D O R J Á V O R R A i n 1961. Over 20 books have been pub l i shed as a resul t o f the i r co -opera t ion , i n c l u d i n g the i r greatest w o r k : " T h e H u n g a r i a n F l o r a i n P ic tures" ( I conograph ia F l o r a e H u n g a r i c a e ) (30). W h e n the last fascicle was pub l i shed i n the 1934 after 5 years o f w o r k , i t m a r k e d the c o n c l u s i o n o f a treatise h a d been finished t h a t was one o f very few i n E u r o p e at tha t t ime , g i v i n g c o m p ­lete diagnostic i l lus t ra t ions o f a l l the species i n c l u d e d i n J Á V O R R A ' S t e x t b o o k (28) a n d w h i c h occur red w i t h i n the large C e n t r a l Eu ropean area o f the same geographical a n d n a t u r a l boundaries . W i t h a t o t a l o f 4238 i l lus t ra t ions (3978 b lack i n k d rawings and 260 aquarel les) , t he I conograph ia became t h e fu l f i lmen t o f a scientific a c t i v i t y w h i c h s tar ted i n the 18th C e n t u r y w i t h the " D e s c r i p t i o n et I c ô n e s . . . " o f W A L D S T E I N - K I T A I B E L .

F o l l o w i n g the success o f the " I c o n o g r a p h i a " she received n u m e r o u s commiss ions f o r schoo l t ex tbooks and art icles i l lus t ra t ions t o o a n d f r o m experts o f different special (2 , 10, 15, 2 2 , 2 7 , 3 1 , 34 , 37 ,41) a n d a p p l i e d bo tan ica l fields ( 1 , 7 , 19, 23, 36, 38, 4 2 , 4 4 , 46 , 47 etc.). A f t e r the l o n g pe r iod o f w o r k o n flora she also j o i n e d J Á V O R R A ' S efforts o n p o p u l a r i z i n g bo tany . T h e m o s t ou t s t and ing result i n this field was the b o o k " E r d ő m e z ő v i r á g a i " (The

flowers o f w o o d s and meadows) i n 1 9 5 0 ( 3 4 ) w h i c h was a l o n g awa i t ed he lp i n b o t a n y teaching a n d a fieldbookfor many generat ions o f natura l i s t s . T h i s b o o k was f o l l o w e d by weed- iden t i f i ca t ion books ( 4 8 , 4 9 ) , a c o l o u r guide t o o r n a m e n t a l p lants ( 3 6 ) a n d an atlas f o r trees a n d shrubs edi ted o n l y 2 0 years la te r ( 1 8 ) . She also made an in teres t ing " e x c u r s i o n " t o the f i e ld o f e thnograph ica l bo t any co l l ec t ing f o l k names o f p lan ts . H e r largest co l l e c t i on consists o f m o r e t h a n 7 0 0 0 expressions. A smal l select ion has also been pub l i shed i n a b o o k ( 1 7 ) . H e r seedling iden t i f i ca t ion m a n u a l ( 1 0 ) filled a long- fe l t gap i n in t e r ­n a t i o n a l specialised l i t e r a tu re . T h e accurate drawings made o f seedlings ge rmina ted between the double w i n d o w s o f her s tudy i n the m u s e u m f o r over 1 7 years were also used i n an A u s t r i a n weed iden t i f i ca t ion b o o k ( 2 6 ) . Beside p a i n t i n g aquarelles o n dend ro log i ca l sub­jects she began t o w o r k systematicaly as a dendro log i s t i n 1 9 6 9 w i t h her y o u n g colleague. T h e b o o k soon comple ted ( 1 9 ) was the b e g i n n i n g o f an u n d e r t a k i n g t o c o m p i l e the w o o d y plants o f the temperate c l ima t e zone o f the w o r l d ( 2 0 ) . She made 4 0 0 0 fu l l - t ab l e d rawings i n the f o l l o w i n g 1 4 years. T h o u g h she k n e w tha t she w o u l d n o t l i ve t o see the c o m p l e t i o n o f the w o r k , she was c o n v i n c e d that th is w o r k w o u l d be c o n t i n u e d by her f o l l o w e r s .

She was capable o f in tens ive w o r k w i t h enviable se l f - con t ro l a n d accuracy. T h i s a t t i ­t ude gave her amaz ing s t a m i n a i n b o t h phys ica l ly a n d m e n t a l l y f o r field-work. D u r i n g her l i f e she spent thousands o f days, o f t en u n d e r harsh a n d s imple circumstances, o n excur­sions t o pa in t her plants. H e r l i f e - w o r k o f i l l u s t r a t i n g over 6 0 books a n d pub l i ca t ions a n d p r o d u c i n g a n est imated 2 0 , 0 0 0 drawings a n d 1 2 , 0 0 0 aquarelles f o u n d e d a " s c h o o l " i n p lan t i l l u s t r a t i o n i n her c o u n t r y : m a n y o f he r y o u n g f o l l o w e r s consider her as the i r master . I n r e c o g n i t i o n o f her achievements she was awarded the highest of f ic ia l a w a r d , the State Prize i n 1 9 8 0 .

O f her va luable c o l l e c t i o n near ly 1 0 , 0 0 0 aquarelles are the p r o p e r t y o f the B o t a n i c a l D e p a r t m e n t o f the H u n g a r i a n N a t u r a l H i s t o r y M u s e u m — o n l y the beau t i fu l o r c h i d p a i n t i n g co l l e c t i on has remained i n the hands o f her f a m i l y . F o r techn ica l reasons, her pa in t ings have a lways been publ ished repa in ted af ter f i t t i n g together i n tables. I t is a p i t y tha t except f o r some exh ib i t ions the p u b l i c has no t yet been able t o enjoy her aquarelles i n thei r o r i g i n a l beauty, t o a d m i r e the accuracy c o m b i n e d w i t h ar t i s t ic b r i l l i ance a n d scientific h u m i l i t y .
