Some definitions:

Genome: the total genetic content of an organism

Genomes have integrity when all their genes function correctly!

Mutations are permanent changes in the genome.

Research: systematic investigation to improve understanding.

Genomic integrity

Each of us carries a ‘patchwork’ of many mutations in our DNA!

Some give us our father’s eyes or our grandmother’s smile.

As long as the cells function correctly, all is ok!

When something goes wrong, a possible cause is the loss of genomic integrity (i.e. copy number variations, deletions, mutations)

Damage to nucleic acids, RNA included, can have grave consequences.

Repair is crucial, but in many cases, such repair is quite error-prone,potentially leading to the generation of new mutations.

Genomic integrity

The protection of genomic integrity is therefore more

readily facilitated by preventing pollution of the

environment by genotoxic substances.
