Two Types of GreetingsGreeting the Elderly Greeting a Friend

• Shake persons hand, and make friendly eye contact• Greet with Hola! (hello), and use this as a response as well• Follow this up with Como esta usted? (How are you? –formal)

• Shake hand or give hug (depending on closeness of relationship)• A kiss on the cheek is often used as well in close relationships• Greet with Como estas? (How are you?-informal) • Ask what is up by saying Que pasa?

Greetings in Spanish• As with most languages, greeting someone in their native language will make them more comfortable talking to you• Because Spanish has many verb conjugations allowing the speaker to choose the level of formality to use• It is important to choose the correct level of formality so as not to offend someone by sounding too informal

Articles in Spanish: Definite and Indefinite

Like the English language, the Spanish language uses articles before nouns in a sentence. Look at the following example to better understand this.

Give me the chocolate chip cookie.Give me a cookie.

Looking at a plate full of different types of cookies, a person says to you:

Definite article: specific cookie

Indefinite article: any cookie

Adjective/Noun Agreement in the Spanish Language

• Adjectives in the Spanish language must agree in gender, and number with the nouns they modify

• Gender: -If a noun is masculine (el muchacho), the adjective must agree with that gender (alto) -Likewise, if a noun is feminine (la muchacha), the adjective must agree with that gender (alta)

• Number:-If a noun is plural, the adjective modifying it must be plural as well Los muchachos Las muchachas
