TheSeattleHydrologyInstituteworkstoreuniteSeattlewiththewaterfront.Seattlehasbeenseendesperatelybuildingwallsandstiltstogetawayfromitimpedingwatersforgenerations,butisthatthebestanswer??? TheJamesCornerrenovationbeginstoaddressthedisconnectbe-tweenSeattleanditswaterfront,butfailstobreaktheseawallandallowtheoceantore-inhabitthecity.Arelationshipbetweenthetidesandthecitycanberevealedaftertheremovalofthewallthathasbeenseparatingthemfordecades.

TheHydrologyLaboratorywouldhelpcreateauniqueecologicalconditionbycollectingfreshwateronitsroof,filteringthroughthebuildingandontothesite.Herethisfreshwatermixeswiththetidecreatingauncom-monbrackishsituationtobestudiedandenjoyednotonlybyscientists,butyouraveragecitizenandtheirchildren.

Whenlookingatbirds,themiracleofflighthasalwaysfascinatedus,andvitaltothatprocessisthefeather.Thewonderthatisthefeatheristhebasisforthisproject,havingalreadyinspiredcountlessscholarsbyitsuniqueproperties.

Themoirepatternisvitalintheinthefacade,obscur-ingtheviewer,fromtheexterior,andallowingthebirdstosingwithoutdis-turbance.Thecenterraisesorlowerstheviewertothehabitatofvariousbirdswithintheregion.

TheCommunityCornerdesignstressesthecomfortofthepatrons,allowingeachacornertofindrespiteinwhilefacilitatingbutnotforcinginteractions.

Whilebeginningtheexplorationofcornersandcornersetseating,astrongconnectiontothesteppingshapeofazigguratwasfound.Thezigguratisaspiritualtemplecon-structedinancientMesopotamia.Thestepped,cornerdesignoftheziggurataddstothecomfortofsuchasacredspaceandultimatelyatteststothereachingoftheheavens.

I glance higher for some hint of the weather, and the square of air broadens and broadens to become the blue expanse over Montana range-land, so vast and vaulting that it rears, from the foundation line of the plains horizon, to form the walls and roof of all of life’s experiences

that my younger self could imagine,

IvanDoigwasanawardwinningauthor,whowrotemanycriticallyacclaimednovelsamajorityofwhicharebasedinhisnativestateofMontana.TheworksofIvanDoigareconsideredtobealargepartoftheculturalidentityoftheAmericanWest,masterfullydetailingBigSkycountryanditsinhabitants.

IvanDoigpassedawaythisyearat75yearsold.IrevisedmyresidencemidwaythroughthesemesterintoamemorialtohonortheintangibleimpactleftonmanybyIvanDoigandhistalesoftheMontanarange.

OntheequinoxsmallcutsintheslatsoftheroofaligntocasttheaboveDoigquoteontotheviewingplatformbelow.

IntheSpringof2015Ihadtheopportuni-tytoworkwithMFGRDesignsandthreeotherstudentsinordertocreatethebackdropfortheTedXBozemanevent.

Theentiredesignbuildprojecttook8weekstocompletewithabudgetofaroundathousanddollars.Thedesignofthebackdropdynamicallyrespondedtocameraandviewerangleswithinthevenue.TheprojectutilizedgrasshopperandplasmacutterstoeasilycreatemasscustomizationinthesteelconnectorsontheLVLribs.

Thestagewasalsodesignedtobepartiallyreusableforpotentialinstallationataparkorsimilarvenue.Additionalpartswouldbeaddedtoprovideseating,alongwiththecurrentshadingschemebeingupdatedtoamaterialsuitableforexterioruse.

TheGoodNeighborbuildingworkstoretainandintegratepeopleintoarapidlyexpandingcommunitybycre -atingmeaningfulneighbor-hoodlikesituationsinwhichtoliveandpotentiallythriveasaunit.

Thereareseveralkeyamenitieslocatedwithinthebuildingalongwithsharedhousingunitsinordertoac-complishthis.ThiswouldbeaK-6MontessoriSchool,anElderlyServicesCenterandaCommunityCenter.

Theseamenitiescou-pledwithco-housingstrivestosetupasupportiveneigh-borhoodatmosphereandcreatemeaningfulintergener-ationalrelationships.

Theindependentelderlypopulationisnotonethatisoftenfocusedoninourcommu-nities.Makingthisgroupofpeople,andtheirinteractionswithchildrenvitaltodailylifeviasharedmealsandreadingtimeworkstoreestablishtheirvaluewithinacom-munity.Byintegratingthetwogenerationstheyarebothallowedtheopportunitytonotonlybehelped,buthelpalso,thesebondsareshowntobenefitbothgroupsmental-lyandpsychologically.

AmajorityofthesewatercolorpiecescomefromatriptoNewZea-land.Thenorthandsouthislandwereexploredoverthecourseof4weeksOurexplorationsanddiscover-iesweretobedocumentedthroughaseriesofwatercolors.

Watercolorisoneofmyfavoritemediumstoworkwith.Theexpressionandcharacterthatcanbeshownthroughlayerswhilestillremainingsubtlein-triguesmeandpushesmetocontinuedevelopingmyskill.

Findinganobjectandgivingitanewpurposeisapassionofmine.Thewingbackchairsbelowareevidentandhavebeencustomreupholsteredbyme.Thebluechairpicturedwastheoriginal,fromthatsprangthedan-delionchair,itsmatchwassoldtofinanceothers.

Thecoffeesackchairwasonitswaytothedump,itsleatherhadbeenmauledbyalonelydog.Coffeesacksweredonatedbyalocalcoffeeshop.

Thisbrasshangingincenseburnerwasdiscoveredonasec-ondhandshoptrip.Iwantedthispiecetobecomealamp,thisuseIbelievedre-elevatedthisrecentlydiscardedobject. Duetoitstraditionalreli-gioususes,Icarefullychosewhattocarvetointensifythelighttobecast.Ichosetocarvesacredgeom-etrypatternsintoitssurface.Pleas-antly,duetoitsformeruseafterthemetalwarmsslightlyfrankin-censeisreleasedintotheroom.

Pottery.Areuseofsand,clayandotherminerals. Thatmaybeastretchforthispage,butitsnotincorrect.Pot-teryisacraftforwhichIrecentlydiscoveredaninterestforandhopetopursuefurtherinthefuture.

Dailyaminimumofonehourwasdedicatedtowardsketchingthecurrentenvironment.Theamountofdepthandcharacterfoundinaspacebeginstorevealitselftoyouasyouaresitting,drawing,andintegratingyour-selfintotheenvironment.

MynameisKatie,IamoriginallyfromColorado,buthavebeenenjoying,studying,andcallingthebeautifulstateofMontanahomeforthelast4years.IaminpursuitofaninternshipinwhichIhopetogainexperienceandunderstandingwithinthearchitecturalworld.Ihaveaninsatiablecuriosityanddesiretotouch,see,hear,andunder-standallIcaninthisworld.

Additionally,IwouldconsidermyselfanexcellentteamplayerandIpridemyselfongivingallideasafairapproach.Ihavegrowntoappreciatetheideasthatcanbecreatedbyteamwork,throughtheuniquewayeveryonethinkscollidinginasinglearena.IfeelthatIamaqualitycommunicator,andtypicallyfindauniquewayofexplainingthingsinordertogeteveryoneonthesamepagevisuallyandmentally.
