• Kilauea is the youngest and most active volcano.• Located on the southern part of the Island of Hawaii.• At present, Kilauea volcano is still having one of the
most long-lived eruptions known on earth.
Map • Kilauea has frequent summit and flank lava flow
eruptions which extend to the sea on both sides of the volcano.
Latest update map from USGS-HVO showing the quickening lava flow branch.
Shield Volcano
• the largest volcano of all types• volcanoes are not steep• if water gets into the vent, it’ll cause high explosion• otherwise they are characterized by low-explosivity
• high magma• the lava is hot and little-changed since the time it was generated• common product of hotspot volcanism and can find along
subduction-related volcanic arcs
Mafic Lava• A low content of silica between
45% - 52%, resulting in low viscosity (runny).
• Water and other volatiles can more easily and gradually escape from mafic lava, so eruptions are less violent than felsic-lava eruptions.
Eruptions
*its name means "spewing" or "much spreading" in the Hawaiian language,
referring to its frequent outpouring of lava.
Estimated Age of First Eruption of Kīlauea300,000-600,000 years before present
• The historical record began with a very explosive eruption in 1790• The current eruption started in January 3, 1983 and continue to the
present– 30 years of eruption
• Mostly gentle eruptions, sometimes lethal explosive– lava flows downslope from fountains
• Frequent short eruptions produced thick chunky lava flows that usually cooled and halted before reaching the coast
• Erupted from 3 main areas– its summit and– 2 rift zones
1. Most eruptions actually occur on the long rift zones than in the summit area– constructing ridges of lower elevation than the summit– the summit of the volcano is high
2. Eruptions along the east and southwest rift zones have build ridges reaching outward from the summit
Impact to people• Gases: various gases are released from the volcano such as: Sulfur dioxide, Carbon dioxide, Hydrogen etc.• it can be dangerous for people who have respiratory
problems.
• The lava destroys city and town when it erupt.• Now it belongs to be one of the famous Hawaii’s volcanoes
national park for tourism.
