FAITHFUL Friar’s message
It is a distinct honor to be elected as your Faithful Navigator for
the 2014-15 Columbian Year. Patriotism is more than a word or
principle for me; it is a way of life. I come from a military family
that holds service to this country as a sacred obligation.
Members of my family have fought in all of this nation's
conflicts since the Civil War. More recently, my father fought in
World War II, an uncle in Korea and Vietnam, another uncle in
Vietnam, and my brother completed two tours of duty in Iraq. I
spent eight years in the Army, Reserves, and National Guard as
an Armor Officer, where as a tank commander and platoon
leader I was "the tip of the spear." Currently, I manage all
veterans programs for the LA County Department of Mental
Health. As a result, it is only natural and fitting that I would
want to join the 4th Degree, the patriotic arm of our Order.
As your Faithful Navigator, I hope to re-ignite, extend, and
expand this spirit of patriotism across our Assembly, Councils,
Parishes, and community. Our Assembly should and shall be
the Catholic "tip of the spear" for Patriotism in the South Bay
area of Los Angeles County. We have come a long way but
much remains to be done. First and foremost, the Assembly
needs new members, new Sir Knights. We need to actively
recruit 3rd Degree members of our Councils. I challenge each
Sir Knight to personally recruit one new member from their
Council for our next Exemplification Ceremony on 4 October
2014 at the Irvine Marriot. To this end, I personally recruited a
new member from my Council at our last Business Meeting.
Second, we need to retain our current members and provide
them with reasons to be actively involved in the Assembly. We
need new energy and activities. I propose the Assembly
partner with the Military Ministry at St. John Fisher Catholic
Parish in their support of the USO at LAX. I also propose the
Assembly sponsor fund drives at our member parishes in
support of wounded warriors. I am also open for additional
suggestions, but it has become apparent to me over the past
few years that we should do more.
I look forward to the upcoming Columbian year as your Faithful
Navigator. Together, we can be the Catholic "tip of the spear"
for Patriotism in the South Bay.
Fraternally,
Carl P McKnight
Faithful Navigator
