On a fine afternoon in New York, I got into a taxi. From the driver’s expression and the way he slammed in his gears, I could tell that he was upset. I asked him what the trouble was. “I’ve got good reason to be sore,” he growled. “One of my fares left a wallet in my cab this morning. Nearly three hundred bucks in it. I spent more than an hour trying to trace the guy. Finally I found him at his hotel. He took the wallet without a word and glared at me as though I’d meant to steal it”
“He didn’t give you a reward?” I exclaimed. “Not a cent. But it wasn’t the dough I wanted…”
he fumbled, then exploded. “If the guy had only said something…”
How do A students like these do it? Brains aren't the only answer. The most gifted students do not necessarily perform best in exams. Knowing how to make themost of one's abilities counts for much more. Hard work isn't the whole stow either. Some of these high-achieving students actually put in fewer hours than their lower-scoring classmates. The students at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can easily learn. Here, according to education experts and students themselves, are the secrets of A students. Concentrate. Top students allow no interruption of their study time. Once thebooks are open, phone calls go unanswered, TV unwatched and newspapers unread. "This doesn't mean ignoring important things in your life," Amanda explains. "It means planning your study time so that you can concentrate. If I'm worried about a sick friend, I call her before I start my homework. Then when I sit down to study, I can really focus." (Edwin Kiester & Sally Valentine Kiester)
Avoid Informal Diction Colloquial Diction 1. Don’t use contractions like I’m, what’s. 2. Clipped forms such as TV, exam and
dorm are unacceptable. 3. Dictions like kind of, sort of, nice, great
are frowned upon. 4. Slang is not preferable: something
smells fishy, cool, big shot, chick and so on.
Avoid Sexist Language Original: mankind Alternatives: humanity, people, human beings Original: businessman Alternatives: business executive, business

A comma splice is a run-on that occurs when two independent clauses are joined by just a comma. e.g, I opened the door, he didn’t move.
A fused sentence is a run-on that occurs when two independent clauses are joined with on punctuation. e.g, I opened the door he didn’t move.
