The Balfegó gastronomic project responds
to the need to create a thematic space
dedicated to Bluefin Tuna. Each space
represents either water or ship, and is designed
for the user to enjoy multiple views and interact
with their environment. Working along with the
interior designers and chefs, the goal was to create
different immersion levels of the user with the water
atmosphere. This was achieved by a lighting design
based on dynamic light that resembles the sun
filtered by water, or the different tones of light on a
boat, in order to enhance the gastronomic experience.
The main hall functions as a restaurant, where the
dynamic light receives the diner and invites them
to learn more about the Bluefin through a central
piece: the school of fish, composed of 88 units of
customized LED spots with warm filters (2700k),
placed down the central room, illuminating more
than a hundred-acrylic fish hanging from the ceiling,
forming a circle. With fish swimming in space, and
waves surrounding the scene, everyone is welcome
into an immersive world.

The architecture is a container that captures
light, just like a musical instrument captures
music. Light needs a structure that can show
it. ShenZhen LongGang ChuangTou Tower has an
open spatial structure, interspersed with deconstructed
blocks, and with a rhythmical unit form which gives
light the best expression carrier.
The curtain-wall surface is designed with unique
deep windows. With the subtle change of the angle
of the pane sideboard, a natural mechanism of light
reflection is formed.
For the installation, the studio has weighed the
possibility of various schemes through calculation
and simulation. After rethinking, and communicating
with the architects, Grand Sight Design installed
the lights in the grooves on the top of deep windows
(outside the glass).
The anti-glare grilles is added outside the grooves,
and the grilles are customized according to the size
of window frames and the angle of lights, so as to
avoid uncomfortable visual perception. The lights are
arranged and installed according to the mechanism
and rhythm of the architecture itself.

The lighting design for this project is inspired by Poly’s vibrant
corporate culture. Combining decorative and functional
lighting with elements such as digital words, media contents
and language symbols, the lighting design studio created an
intelligent and high-quality office space aimed for new technology
services.
Using track spot lights to tables and white LED linear strips within
the co-working spaces has a large impact of defining and reinforcing
the open and sharing working environment. Stretch ceiling is neatly
implemented in public conference area to further accentuate a simple
and open communication environment.
Decorative lighting items are co-ordinated with digital and futuristic
elements within the space. Feature wall behind the reception desk is
decorated with a world map assembled by dots of LED lights.
In the elevator lobby, feature wall is lit up by different lengths of
lighting lines as if a circuit board was printed on the wall.
Perforated metal panels are lit from behind within the elevator cab.
These dotted lighting lines resemble digital codes providing a visual
relief to the space.Interactive projectors are set for display walls
within the exhibition area.
In this project, lighting design are in details of dots, lines and planes
to allow for multiple visual experiences within the space.

“La flèche dans les nuages” illustrates the
construction period of the spire of the
Strasbourg Cathedral, between the xIV and xV
century. A Story of passion following the steps of the great
characters who marked that era. The public will (re)discover the
different protagonists of this technical, artistic and human tale.
The Spire is one of the most famous and admired architectural
masterpieces of this era, assimilated to a miracle. It is the
craziness of the Man that constantly pushes the limits of the
spirit and the technique that brought the Cathedral to become
an architectural icon of the Middle Ages.
Between symbols and poetry, “La flèche dans les nuages”
explores the drawing techniques of the architect to his wildest
dreams. From dream to reality, the story follows the principal
axes of the narrative:
• The spire from his first sketch to the technical drawings;
• The dream of the architect, the aspiration of the man to
surpass himself;
•The builders of the Place du Château – individually and then
as in ever increasing numbers;
• The builders of the sky and the ascent of the stones to
heaven;
• A heritage forever engraved in the stone and in the sky.
This year, for the first time, ACTLD moved the video
projection from the walls of the Cathedral to the middle
of the sky. They designed an original structure consisting
of a light mesh of 400sqm suspended above the Place du
Château and on which was projected the story of the spire
and the men who built it. An invitation to look up to the sky
and live an immersive experience.

Family. In February 2018, after a year and a half of
renovation, Burg Vischering re-opened its doors.
The overall concept of the exhibition designer, Duncan
McCauley was to show the castle as the main exhibit.
In cooperation with him, De Schutter studio designed
the lighting for both the permanent and the temporary
exhibition.
The lighting design aim was to create lighting that could
only be experienced through atmosphere and not through
visible lighting fixtures. The many custom-made fixtures
combine the newest LED technology whilst blending in
into the historical architecture. This is with the exception of
the knight’s hall, where the chandeliers are eye-catching
and are part of the dynamic lighting that tell the story of
the festivities that took place in this magnificent space.

George Sexton Associates provided lighting design
services for the grand three-story high lobby spaces at
190 S. La Salle. They worked with krueck + Sexton
Architects and Tishman Speyer Properties to revive this Class-A
office building located in downtown Chicago. Originally designed
by Philip Johnson in the 1980s, the purpose of this work was to
preserve the building’s historic design while finding innovative,
seamless, cost-effective, value conscious, and sustainable
solutions to highlight the interior architecture. The original gold leaf
ceiling was brought to life by integrating LEDs into the cornices. In
addition, the large cast bronze grilles in the main lobby and elevator
lobbies were repurposed into backlit “windows” to balance the
contribution of daylight and enhance the symmetry of the space.
The original decorative fixtures were rejuvenated with modern
satine lenses and LED sources to reduce glare and infuse the
space with diffuse light. The integration of LED lighting in historic
lanterns and grilles involved meticulous detailing and extensive use
of mockups for evaluation of lighting systems. The project was
designed to meet AShRE 90.1-2013 energy code requirements,
with allowed lighting power density of 0.88w/sf (8.8 w/SQ M).
The lighting design provided for the lobby highlights the sculpture
by Anthony Caro, Chicago Fugue, which was inspired by musical
instruments and constructed on-site in 1987.

The Debating Chamber in the Scottish Parliament
effectively functions as aTV studio during parliamentary
business. The brief was to review the current metal-halide
lighting scheme and daylight ingress conditions, aiming to improve
glare and uniformity for the MSPs and broadcasting team.
KSLD decided that the best lighting solution had to include a
custom suspended luminaire, creating soft but high light levels for
broadcasting, while integrating and showcasing the architectural
structure that was previously hidden behind hundreds of pole
mounted spotlights.
The form of the luminaire mirrors the plan-form of the chamber,
and the light extractors within the fitting are graphic figures used

elsewhere in the chamber, reflecting the architectural language of
the building as a whole. The quantity of graphic figures represents
the number of sitting MSPs.
Specially designed frosted louvres prevent direct sunlight
causing problems with broadcasting and improve comfort for
parliamentarians. The spatial arrangement was devised to create
a sense of randomness, but with discernible pattern at specific
angles and homogeneous light for the broadcasting cameras.
A soft, yet high quantity light is achieved, via hidden integrated
LEDs. While a full DALI control system manages lighting for
different functions and times of day.

The Fabric Hotel is located on a street characterized by
fabric shops, textiles and sewing products and serves as a
“neighborhood salon” of sorts, combining rough industrial
design with warm and colorful furniture and art.
The recently, 43-room, intimate hotel, which years ago was home
to a sewing factory, has been designed in a harmonious and
tasteful manner. From the moment you enter the lobby, the avant-
garde, lively atmosphere reminds visitors of Berlin, and the young
design fits the space like a glove with an air of total relaxation.
The artwork adorning the walls, and Jennifer Abessira’s urban
space inspired collages on the back wall of the reception area
perfectly emphasizes the design concept of the hotel and its
relative location in the city center. Jennifer’s work is accentuated
by adjustable spot lights 2500k LED light. Above the reception
desk custom made “chandelier” from brass tubes with carbon-
look dimmable LED bulbs. The interior design, entrusted to Oren
Bronstein, highlights the contrast between the rough and industrial
design with the warm and calming atmosphere in the rooms.
The attention and thought behind the design elements is apparent
in every corner of the hotel, as evidenced by the beauty of the
combination of colors and textures.
Architect yoav Messer created a red silicate bricks façade
covering the exterior walls of the building, giving it an unusual
texture and simulating the façade of the old sewing factory.
The square-framed windows are constructed of black steel, and
stand out at various distances from the wall, creating an optical
illusion. The variable distances are highlighted by a hidden linear
LED light, also in 2500k to complete the warmth of the red-
brownish façade color by night.

The Erasmus Bridge, designed by architect Ben van
Berkel, is the tallest bridge in the Netherlands (height
139 m) and the most important landmark in Rotterdam’s
skyline since its inauguration in 1996.
With the Erasmus Bridge approaching its 21st anniversary,
the City of Rotterdam and the architects from UNStudio, who
designed the original lighting scheme of the bridge, wanted to
revamp the lighting scheme with the latest LED technology and
dynamic possibilities to perform striking visual effects in mind.
Considering the project as a re-lighting of a light scheme over
20-years old, the whole approach was a challenge by itself, as
neither the original concept nor positioning of the fixtures could
be modified. The intention was to re-think the original lighting
scheme and translating into a full LED solution, while keeping in
mind three main elements: 1. reservation of the original lighting
concept and the appearance of the bridge; 2. night sky friendly;
3. reduced energy consumption and maintenance.
Cooperating with the architects, ACTLD worked out a full
dynamic RGBW solution, that not only respected the original
appearance, especially for the whites, but recreated a new
installation with added value: an open and flexible dynamic
installation, with a great variety of scenarios, better color
rendering, better performance and increased output, even with
less energy consumption (-17% from the original scheme).

The Willemsbrug in Rotterdam is one of the city’s three
large bridges, alongside the Erasmusbrug and the Van
Brienenoordbrug. The 356 meter long cable-styed bridge,
designed by Cor Veerling architects, crosses the river Maas.
It is a symbol of modern engineering art: clear, functional and,
with its red-painted steel structure, in direct contrast to the white
Erasmus Bridge. Because of its color and shape, the nickname
“Golden Gate Bridge of Rotterdam” established.
As a guiding idea for the lighting design, the two neighbouring
bridges should stand next to each other as a family with
independent but not competing characters. Whilst the shape
of the Erasmusbrug in nighttime is pointed out mainly by
its illumination of the steel cables, the illumination of the
Willemsbrug willingly waives this element while focusing on the
body. By doing so, the two bridges enter into a dialog.
An essential feature of the Willemsbrug is its red color, to
extend this color to the night time impression was a crucial part
of the lighting design. This is done by specially for this project
developed LED elements consisting of red and white LEDs, that
can be controlled separately. Due to this technique the light color
can be adjusted and the color shifting, caused by the ageing
process of the surface coating, can be negated. A LED-Line all
along the horizontal bridge deck is connecting both river banks
and creates a red glowing stripe over the river Maas.
The main idea and different variants had been visualized in
3D-Models, this process helped communicating the design and
supported the decision making process.
The Lighting Design is based on modern planning tools, that
make this illumination very sustainable in an energy efficient and
ecological manner, causing minimal light pollution. Studio DL
accompanied the implementation planning and the realization
process, making sure to achieve the best possible design and
desired quality.
With the illumination of the Willemsbrug, the lighting designers
have created an object that not only underlines its independent
character at night, but also blends harmoniously into the city’s
nocturnal silhouette without entering into direct competition with
other important buildings.

A 30,000 pixel and kinetic effect sculpture has been
designed and installed at Zaventem airport in Brussels,
above the main travellator leading from the jetway to
the baggage claim hall.
The main purpose of this realization is to invite the passengers
landing at Brussels Airport to discover the region of Flanders
through a dynamic media installation, immersing the passerby
into a world of visual imaging and lighting.
The floating sculpture emphasizes the strong perspective of the
main corridor’s axis, making the travellator the perfect spot for an
immersive experience.
The animated ceiling installation is 70 m long, combining low/
medium resolution LED strips and 4 panoramic high-quality video
panels, fitted above a special kinetic fabric. A loop of content
runs 24-7 in this demanding environment, giving all passengers
a glimpse of what they can expect and do in the region.
Literal content appears on the main video panel displays
while more abstract animations run through the length of the
installation. The animation of abstract surfaces follows the
dynamics and graphics of the video, so it looks like ‘extensions’ of
the content itself; retaining same color, tonality and continuity.
The kinetic fabric that covers the installation was an important
element to illustrate the travelling and immersive effect by
creating an interesting linear deformation.
ACTLD treated the whole sculpture as a graphic landscape of
lights, with different sensations in depths and compositions.
The challenge of keeping the installation flexible in a space that
has a lot of safety constrains to respect, directly impacted the
design, resulting in different modular facetted elements that are
forming the sculpture.

Lighting Design: Fabrice Azoulay - Canal LEDPhoto: Fabrice Azoulay, Roland Bourguet
The MIS (Maison Internationale de Séjour) has a
dual purpose. It welcomes young people, students
or apprentices, for short stays. But outside, its
façades respond to a second mission of embellishment,
communication and permanent creation...
Parisian residents or tourists who pass by, or on the ring road
highway, must have a new vision of the city at night.
The brief was to satisfy the demands of the Mayor on his vision
of urban lighting and the dynamism of the neighborhood.
For all these reasons Canal LED created a revolutionary
system: according to the news, the weather or the imagination
of the designer, the façades of the three buildings can change
colors or effects. They can repeat the same message, or variant,
each developing specific information, as they can simply
reproduce predefined images.
Everything can be changed remotely and live, which allows the
studio to respond quickly to requests for new visuals.
In all, no less than 153,984 LEDs illuminate the façade of the
MIS. Never in Europe had a building owned so many of these
lights outside. The large illuminated area (1,025 m2, a “screen”
about 58m long and 18m high) makes the lighting of the MIS a
unique project.
From their conception, the MIS have been equipped with a
second glass skin. Their skeleton was made up of clear walls, so
as to privilege the transparency, and to bring out the soul of the
construction. The outer epidermis consists of 284 rectangles of
glasses, all surrounded by LEDs profiles. The way to place leds
gives a rendering worthy of a screen, proposing lighting effects
never seen in Europe.
All these LEDs are controlled by a server. Each profile is
equipped with pixel led strip. So that collectively or separately,
they can be controlled to serve all imaginations, whether in
terms of lighting intensity, or choice of colors...

Recently, Gummersbach has its long-desired
representative entrance area into the city, whose
architectonical character is predominated by a gold
radiating roof structure.
In the course of the planning the old station building was
new painted and the bus station was displaced there. The
architects’ office of pape+pape architects from kassel
planned a 130m long and 10 to 25m wide roof. The roof is
made of a polygonal folded corpus - developed from the
broken structure of the boulders in the surrounding area -
which follows the slight curve of the railway.
Its surface shine apparently golden created by the covering of
aluminium bronze shingles.
The structure is characterized by the lighting of the golden roof,
which not only emphasizes the architecture, but also provides
the necessary lighting. This is done via two parallel-running and
diffused LED light strips in the central axis above the vertical
slices. This is complemented by warm white roof recessed
downlights, which illuminate the bus segments, ramps and
stairs, with a powerful light and a narrow cone of light.
The effect: the light bands create a radiant, almost embedding
environment in which the light hotspots create a certain
dramaturgy. In addition, the impression arises that the light on
the underside of the roof comes from the strong light of the
spots, because the light bands are arranged so high that one
can not see where this light actually comes from.

Museo Lavazza is a sensory journey through global
coffee culture, explored through the 120 year
story of the Lavazza family.
Michael Grubb Studio provided lighting design for the exhi-
bition, working with multi-award winning exhibition designers
Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) to create a series of
highly immersive and emotive experiences.
The journey begins with a homely welcome into the 19th
century roots of the Lavazza brand, followed by the fascinating
production process, where visitors can smell, touch and taste
the alchemy of coffee production “from bean to cup”, the ri-
tuals and traditions of coffee making, and the fabulous creative
collaborations which make Lavazza culturally distinct.
Museo Lavazza has five galleries, or ‘worlds’, each with its
own style and theme: 1. Casa Lavazza, a cosy environment
dedicated to the company history; 2. La Fabbrica, devoted
to the process of blending, roasting and packaging Lavazza’s
coffee; 3. La Piazza, an iconic celebration of the coffee
rituals which unite us all; 4. L’Atelier, a room documenting
60 years of Lavazza’s creative collaborations with artists and

Aesthetic sensitivity, individual attribution of meaning
and personal attitude depend on our visual perspective.
Should we change our emotional or geographical standpoint, the
temporary perception likewise changes and thus our interpretation.
Gestalt psychology confirms that the basic shapes of circle,
rectangle and triangle serve as mythologically and metaphysically
evocative anchors of interpretation, allowing us to grasp and
structure the complexity of our environment. The light installation
developed by Studio De Schutter, in partnership with Döllken
Lighting, is based on this concept and plays simultaneously with
the complexity and simplicity of our perception and the multi-
facetted reality that surrounds us. It sees itself as a trigger for a
change of perspective and calls for the tracing and disintegration of
our cognitive dissonances.

Now more than ever the unique experiences that come to us through
the senses have taken a big role thanks to social networks. To all
the traditional concepts that are sought in a hotel we have now to add the
search for “instagrammable” experiences, that fill our senses. The hotel
must be seen in this sense, considering the rocky environment of Tenerife,
the architecture of Leonardo Omar and the interior design of MKV.
The hotel is divided into two blocks: 1. a familiar one, with the Oliva
restaurant, where a more open lighting with striking decorative lights was
used; 2. another block for adults where the Spa and restaurants Maresía,
San ho and Nao Atlántico are located, with more closed lights.
In all the restaurants DALI has been used to adapt the lighting to the uses
of the spaces maximizing the customer experience at all times.

The warm candlelit appearance of the evening setting opens
onto the terrace where low level accents within the stairs form
a large indirect reflector, balancing the contrasts of interior/
exterior. Graduated changes of soft wash and sharp accent
gives emphasis to task spaces. These accents were used to
build the visual plane, allowing traditional light levels to drop to
very low levels just above 1 lx.
The most important aspects for the multi-tiered Wilkins
Terrace were legibility, orientation and connectivity. Low level
lighting is interwoven with the architecture and lighting façades,
accenting stone reveals and building up a presence of light
emanating from the materials with no down lighting or visible
light fittings and a total absence of glare.

The brief was to create an attractive new social space
for staff and students but also to provide routes to
surrounding spaces to better connect the Blooms-bury
Campus. The Refectory was light locked so BDP made the
ceiling plane porous to orientate the spaces and potential uses
to daylight or night time. Another layer was added to enable
the space to function as a bright canteen in the morning, for
meetings in the afternoon and for functions in the evening.

The project of the Pavilion of Catalonia at the
Biennale di Venezia is based on a recurrent idea by
RCR Arquitectes to represent their dream of nature.
A world of dreams that comes from La Vila in Olot, an new
experimental laboratory for architecture, and is presented as
an exhibition made exclusively for the biennale.
In the pavilion, the abstraction generated by light, the
enveloping plastic material and hundreds of hanging Fresnel
lenses, aim to immerse the visitor in a sensorial experience in
which the limits of the space are blurred. Light projections and
graphical representations on some of the lenses, reveals
the most intimate universe inhabited by Rafael, Carme and
Ramon, 2017 Pritzker winners. The lighting design generates
a dreamlike atmosphere. As the light interacts with the plastic
materials and lenses, it creates multiple effects and light
densities throughout the different exhibition zones, immersing
visitors in an ambience that strengthens the architectural
concept.

The lighting concept development of Borusan
Auto started off by heading to the TEM
highway and analyzing the building’s surrounding
environment. The main approach to the lighting design
concept was what one can perceive at a glance while
passing close to the building along the highway. Planlux
was responsible for the lighting design project.
At the entrance of the BMW showroom, people are
greeted with a highlighted car; then, there is a 9-meter
high volume split into two, with one half being a gallery
space filled with cars, and the other half providing a
mezzanine floor, where the office spaces are located.
The gallery space spans continuously for 130 meters
along the whole width of the building. The continuity
of mezzanine floor along this span helps the observer
perceive interior volume both internally and externally,
for that reason it was important to emphasize the
contours of the mezzanine floor with light.
The filigree textile façade designed and engineered by
Werner Sobek creates an exciting visual contrast in
juxtaposition with the concrete texture of the building.
A highly transparent glazed façade between the textile
and the concrete surfaces further underlines this visual
effect and contributes to the building’s lightweight
appearance.
In the showroom, the use of the lights and their
technical specifications were already set by BMW
standards. After analysing the needs of the building,
Planlux found it was best to switch to LED lighting.

hospitality, organization, comfort, style and emotion are
the key words from wich the lounge project stems. The

The concept of Casa Alitalia project by Marco Piva Studio in
Rome Fiumicino, inaugurated in June 2018, was to create an
environment with a homey feel rather than of a public space,
with areas arranged like a house. In Casa Alitalia a large doorway
leads into an Italian building, a passage that takes guest from the
chaotic airport environment into a calm, sophisticated space.
The lighting has been designed to enhance the quality of the
materials and the colors of the spaces. A punctual and modular
use of light sources, the contrast between different materials
and Made in Italy furnitures have been chosen to guarantee
quality and durability as well as beauty and harmony.

The scope of the lighting project was to update an old
lighting system with metal halide lamps.
The request from the Director of the Museum was to
have a diffuse light on the artworks with no specific accent.
The Baldieri Studio used, on the existing tracks, LED spot
light with different power and lenses to achieve the best
beam to spread the light over the paintings. The light level is
controlled by an onboard dimmer, the LED source is 4000k
to better match the daylight big skylight. The CRI used is >95
with very a high score on the R9.
According to the exhibition layout where the statues look at
the paintings, like a normal visitor, the Baldieri Studio had to
use a stage lighting technique to emphasize the sculputures
and avoid any glare to visitors.

The lighting design for the Mexican Pavillion in the Venice Biennale seeks
to communicate, in a subtle and precise way, the curatorship of this
year: Echoes of a Land. It explains three realities: the complexity of the
Mexican territory, its devastation due to natural causes and some examples
of contemporary Mexican architecture.
The essentiality of the pavilion was filled with contents with imprint through
the ordered placement of vertical tectonic elements of worked stone murals
that explained the three conceptual realities. The pavilion also included more
sensitive elements. On one hand, sounds from Mexico that were heard
through headphones placed on a bench and illuminated by LED strips.
On the other, three pieces of light art that brought light and color from

A special approach to lighting design was proposed where

The Populist Bebek brewery in Istanbul is located in one of the
most sophisticated neighborhoods of the Bosphorus. With a
refined and dreamlike appearance, lighting uses a scenographic
language of contrasts, allowing the focal points to emerge from
darkness and highlighting the richness and textures of the materials.
The Beer Dream Machine is the main character: a sculptural piece that
simulates brewing beer and entertains the viewer with its dynamic
lighting. The BDM provides a warm and softly diffused ambient light
through its tanks and bubbles.
For the architectural lighting of tables and bars, very defined optics
are used, in order to provide the necessary light levels in well-defined
areas. Light plays with contrast, establishing clear visual hierarchies and
enhancing the different materials and textures. Tables are illuminated
with black LED projectors, which remain completely unnoticed on the
dark ceiling background, and with cylindrical suspension luminaires.
Above the bars, low glare recessed downlights with refractive lenses

To find lighting ideas supporting the natural beauty of
the place, without becoming too intrusive and without
overcoming the natural environment.
To make the lighting intensity and color of every lamp
independently changing through as many hues as possible, by
a DMx-RDM control system, making the perception of both the
caves and the waterfall changing as well. One of the purposes
was to hide wherever possible the lighting fixtures, despite the
very difficult environment, making their effect almost “magical”.
Another aim was to take care of the installing positions, in
order to avoid any glare for the visitors, and to make easier the
installing/maintenance works and the cables paths.
Artec Light Design used high quality IP67/68 LED lamps only, in
order to minimize the maintenance in very difficult positions, often
under falling water.
The final results:
• 89 lamps for a total maximum power of 3,5KW.
• The final lighting sequence, controlled by a remote DMX-RDM
memory system, was as smooth as stunning.
• Lighting offers a deeper and wider perception plane, making the
place really magical.
• The visitors increased of about 40% from the first re-opening
weeks.

The Syrah Restaurant together with the surrounding
vineyards, located in Montecarlo (Lucca, Italy), is the
core of this lighting design project. The Syrah,
a sinuous grapevine leaf made of glued-laminated wood and
glass, is also the entrance to the new Buonamico Wine Resort.
The particular Syrah architecture and the environment around
have led to a specific approach. It was necessary to deal with
a building under construction, hard to any form of intrusion by
electrical systems.
The interior lighting design aims to recreate a cosy atmosphere
through a fine-tune light at the tables, arranged in a space
dominated by a 6m high wooden shaped roof with large
beams and surrounded by continuous glass windows, avoiding
flooding the surfaces with light.
Small accents of light help the vision of the structure,
enhancing it without becoming too oppressive. Six different
pre-set lighting scenarios allow to vary the mood according to
the use during the day. The exterior design aims to create a
dialogue with the surrounding context and with the Montecarlo
bell tower view without disturbing the balance of the location,
integrating itself in the panorama. On the restaurant terrace,
the lighting fades to low illuminance levels becoming a perfect
link between the interiors and the vineyards. Indoor and
exterior are harmonized creating a continuity of language.
The interior lighting concept aims to ensure a sense of well-
being at the restaurant by recreating the right atmosphere
and a good comfort lighting. In terms of product design, it
was decided to give continuity to the cylindrical volume of
the elevator around which all the spaces are developed; its
elementary geometry becomes a characterizing element
for the lighting of tables and counters where is required a
well-defined direct light. The exterior lighting concept looks
for concordance and dialogue between the building and the
surrounding environment. The internal volume, visible from
every angle, is emphasized defining the surrounding context
only with accents of light. The structure is highlighted by light
blades, while the terrace is bordered by a luminous horizon.

Aquatio it’s a charming new 5-star hotel that brings the
unique experience of a relaxing break in one of the
world’s oldest cities: Matera. The story of Aquatio -
Cave Luxury Hotel & SPA begins with a drop of water; a simple,
pure, incessantly cascading element which shapes matter and
forms spaces, furnishings and the structure as a whole.
The purity and sinuous lines of a drop of water inspired the
design during the creation of interiors and furnishings, and his
development of an expertly captivating lighting system.
Opened in 2018, the hotel occupies a unique position in the heart
of Unesco’s Sassi World heritage site. The hotel rooms, bars and
external areas cover an overall area of 5,000 sqm.
Inspired by the flowing of water the lighting system is fundamental
to shape the ancient stone of Matera Sassi site.
The only source of lighting are spotlights (3 watt, 3000k and 10°
of opening each) recessed into the flooring. Their light goes from
below to the walls creating games of shadows among the space.
Ceilings become reflecting parabolas which are able to multiplies
perspectives and involve the observer as the centre of a system.
The lighting scenographic design is based on a new, contemporary
conception of luxury. It does not mean “opulence” but sustainability
of medias, tools and material.
A deep use of light in a wellness and hospitality structure drove its
design creating a place where people feel comfortable and welcome.

is a building under heritage protection, which today hosts
a dynamic hub of architects, designers and young creative
professionals. It was built in two different phases, back in 1952
and 1964 – a heyday of industrialization of Zurich. The renovation
aims to enhance the visibility of the building in the existing urban
environment, to provide a better orientation for the visitors,
bringing back the radiance and industrial character of the building.
Collaborating with Marazzi-Paul Architects and PSP Real
Estate, lightsphere created a uniform language throughout
light: providing a diffuse pleasant general illumination, choosing
premium-quality materials for finishes, optimizing visible cabling
and multiple fragmentation of elements on the ceiling, by
integrating sensors and accessories into luminaires, were some
of the strategies employed. The strict conditions imposed by
the heritage protection were critical; no changes of the existing
electrical infrastructure were allowed. Moreover latest energy
regulations require the addition of sensors and emergency light in
the building. For this reason, bespoke luminaires were designed
in collaboration with lighting manufacturers, to ensure a clean and
neat ceiling appearance, by integrating sensors and emergency
lighting into the body of the luminaires. Lightsphere created a link
between the four different cores of the building, stimulating the
imaginary through a light graphic approach, by the use of circular
shaped, unique luminaires per floor.

finishes, adding value and a representative touch to the entrances

it highlights exactly the culinary and design elements and it flows
seamlessly in the space, compensating where necessary the lack of
natural lighting and simulating its variations and its effects.
Use of LED luminaires in 2700k and IRC90 or higher with very
specific optics to direct the light exclusively on the elements to be
highlighted. The realistic shapes stand out against a background
where hidden biodynamic luminaires are used, as a means of recalling
the color temperature of sunlight at different times of the day.

The installation City of Light, designed by Marco
Piva for Helios Automazioni, exposed the first time
in Accademia di Brera in Aprile 2017, was a further
investigation into the ratio between matter and light in Marco
Piva’s Architectural projects.
In a play between scales and volumes, various volumetric
elements of different heights arise and grow vertically, simulating
the architectural environment of hypothetical metropolis.
The installation consists of 20 blocks of white SIVEC polished
marble, supported by honeycomb opal structures that uniformly
disperse the light through the stone material.
The base plate, which recalls the regular grid of an urban plan
development, contains a system of LED projectors characterized
by a frosted cold light.
City of Light, which appears as a “heavy” element in the
daylight, becomes gradually lighter as darkness approaches.

More and more people are switching from cars to
bikes for their daily commute; this is also true in
the Swiss city of Basel. Exclusively for bicycles,
the pharmaceutical group Novartis built an underground parking
garage for its staff members on the campus. Completed in
the summer of 2017, a subterranean space for more than 800
bicycles was created which forms an impressive architectural
site. Inspired by the Brazilian architecture of Lina Bo Bardi,
the elongated underground space is enclosed by corrugated
concrete walls, while the exposed concrete ceiling and the PU
flooring display a deep blue hue. The organic design vocabulary
of the ribbed wall is continued in 16 large circular ceiling
recesses, which tangibly enhance the relatively low ceiling
height of 2.80m relative to the hall-like space. In each ceiling
recess, the lighting concept allocates oversized diffuse ring
luminaires with a stately exterior diameter of 7m.
The 16 luminous “wheels” are the result of a complex custom
luminaire development. The design goal was to provide the
general illumination through the striking graphic element of
the light collars, thus immersing the space and the elaborately
corrugated exposed concrete walls in a gentle light. Each
bespoke luminaire consists of an annular slanting shell of white
translucent PMMA, which has been divided into 12 individual
segments. The light source consists of an LED ribbon with a
120° light distribution, installed on a mounting plate carrying the
drivers on the rear side.
A daylight and presence detecting control system guarantees
an energy efficient lighting solution that ensures a general
illumination of at least 150 lx in the garage, thus providing
orientation and a sense of safety. The goal for the park located
above the bicycle garage was to create quality of stay in the
outdoor environment and to attract employees to the park.

Triple Jet uses light as a democratic instrument. A globally
recognized luminous signal of identity that settles in the public
space as a meeting point of the cultural diversity protagonist of a
new and contemporary urban landscape. It is not the homage to
the icon of the city of Brussels. Triple Jet provokes an exercise of
reflection on the concept of identity. This installation and its radical
form of explicit symbolism through the light reminds us that it is
necessary to recover the identity of our cities and our culture.

The new Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel designed by
Marco Piva Studio is an example of groundbreaking
innovative luxury design with pioneering concepts.
Balanced and tasteful interior design creates the conditions
for a perfect experiential immersion into a new luxury
concept. A very classic but simple space configuration,
where arches and domes are placed to recall memories from
past architecture but interpreted with a modern eye, framed
by very contemporary LED lighting system aimed to recall
the principles of architecture composition.
Bespoke, warm and handpicked materials such as silk,
gold as well as glass, resins and marble are telling to the
visitors and to the hotel guest the story of a unique fusion of
humanism and technic, the unrivalled skilness of transferring
art into every day life experience.
The Marco Piva Studio furthermore created special bespoke
furniture pieces, rooms that variate in colours, special design
light features that marks specific places and effects in the
lobbies, in the restaurant and bars.
The Pantheon Iconic Rome hotel is designed as the perfect
ambience to partake in the Italian style with a cosmopolitan
outlook, a journey into the artistic wonders of this city to discover
its magical places such as the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and
Trevi Fountain.
A Design that creates the best environment to welcome visitors
coming from the five continents eager to be conquered by the
“spirit” of this city that will never surrender to the banality of an
undistinguished way of living.

As part of a modernization project, a staff restaurant and
associated kitchen were to be architecturally renovated,
including the lighting.
The daylight deprived spaces are located in the basement and
feature a interior design and lighting typical of the 1970’s.
An essential part of the design task was to introduce daylight
and a visual relation to the exterior by building a new light well.
For structural reasons, only a confined shaft geometry with small
windows could be realized. The added value for the users was
therefore only attainable by means of artificial illumination imitating
natural light, thus supporting the occupant’s individual circadian
rhythm. A floor-to-ceiling, more than 20m long artificial panorama
window wall compensates for the lack of daylight and thus emulates
a relation to the outdoor environment.
Behind the glazing, linear LED luminaires are concealed in the floor

and ceiling. Their light intensity and color are automatically adapted
to the time of day by means of an intelligent control system. Some
seating areas are accentuated by pendant luminaires, while the
large, multi-use table cluster at the center is uniformly lit by a lattice-
like light structure. The vibrant accent illumination above the buffets
is supplemented by discreet ceiling recessed luminaires in the
circulation zones.
The color temperature of the aisle access illumination and the
lighting of the adjacent open kitchen is equally variable and is
controlled in sync with the luminous wall.
The artificial panorama window provides human centric
illumination in a daylight deprived space that respects and
supports the occupant’s individual circadian rhythm. A vital lighting
atmosphere and high quality of stay with increased
well-being characterize this successful renovation project.

Waves, both visible and invisible, are everywhere in
nature. In ancient hawaii, surfing was considered an
art. The hawaiian people refer to it as He’e Nalu or Wave Sliding
in English, and it was a vital part of their culture.
Light and sound also travel in waves. Inspired by this, he’e Nalu
is an art installation that invites you to ride an experience that
will fill your senses with colors and sounds from the ocean.
The piece is formed by two rows of acrylic columns strategically
located to create an undulating passage. The length and height
of the structure was carefully considered to fully surround the
visitors. Each column is tilted at a specific angle to imitate the
movement of an ocean wave as a person walks through. RGBW
LED floodlights located in the base illuminate each column from
the bottom, changing intensity and color throughout the night.

The store design celebrates Estonian culture and natural heritage
through a shopper journey modelled on a fairy tale walk through
a forest. The main 800sq m duty free store incorporates Tallinn’s first
walk-through format and the core categories (liquor, P&C, confectionery,
tobacco, fashion & accessories) offer a strong local brand presence.
The revamp is intended to express a strong local flavour. The design of
the main free store was envisaged as absolutely integral to the airport’s
pledge to be “the world’s cosiest airport”.
The aim was to make it cosy - with a commercial edge. The store
journey is themed as a forest walk, including wonderful semi-private
seating areas that provide a break in the walk.
These are decorated with themed backlit graphics in a traditional
woodcut style that echo classic fairy tales, the woodcut elements
continue through to the carefully selected regionally sourced, designed
and manufactured wooden pendants .

Perception filters accumulated in a space, air,
earth, cloud, water, time and part light that play
with the complexity of their astonishments.
An abstraction of the form, intangible in its relation
to it, outstanding physically but intervening as
illusions of time and intensities given by the
physical qualities of light. A space of contemplation
immersed in the world of observation. ParteLuz,
as the word refers, is the division, intersections,
cuts and parts of light that create a space.
The project started as an investigation of the
subtile changes of natural light that impact our
public spaces. Time as a concept of movement,
mysterious phenomenon between materials, space
and change of its qualities. The project of control
via DMx plays an important roll creating 3 scenes

All the sculptures of this exhibition
have almost the same technique. LED
projectors of Royal Blue and Lime pairs are the
fixed part, while the projected object changes
according to the environment. To communicate
with the architecture the designer used
plexiglass circles and shapes whose shadows
are projected in the surrounding space.
Movement plays a key role in the installation, as
the rhythm or the rotations and the repetitions
help to create an immersion of the public in
the artwork. An intense dialogue between the
shapes of Palermo and the geometry of light
was generated in this exhibition.
The perception of time and space changed
dramatically, slowing and accelerating as the
look shifted through the place.

Treasures of the Mughals and the Maraja is a touring
exhibition that celebrates Indian jades and jewels from
xVI to xx century belonging to the Al Thani Collection.
Opened for the first time to the public at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New york in 2014, the exhibition then
travelled a lot.
ZNA worked closely with bGcstudio, who also designed the
previous exhibition at the Gran Palais, to realize a lighting scheme
that would make the jewels the masterpieces of the space,
finding a delicate balance between ambient and display lighting.
The magnificent windows of the Sala dello Scrutinio have been
partially blacked out, to control the natural light and recreate a
more dramatic atmosphere. The lighting of the painted ceiling
and walls followed the narrative of the stories, giving a sense of
dynamism and excitement to the visitor, highlighting vistas and
long views but always paying attention to the rendering of fine
details on even the smallest display.
The studio developed a strategy to easily integrate and install
new lighting into the existing showcases, using fibre optics and
small spotlights to reduce the glare to the minimum. The entire
exhibition has been designed with LED lights to contain power
consumption and heating for conservation levels.
Each piece required a bespoke lighting response to bring out the
depth of the gems and render the colours brilliantly. Mounting
angles and distance from the gem as well as colour temperature
were all considered and worked seamlessly into the decorative
design details.

Located in a former post office built in 1927, Full Node
is a co-working and event space. The brief was to have
an innovative and flexible environment.
The lighting design concept was developed in close
collaboration with the architects LxSy.
The meetup and café spaces needed versatile lighting: catchy for
events but also suitable for workshops. These requirements were
fulfilled setting different, easily controllable scenarios. The RGBW
light lines hang in different heights and directions, playing on the
concept of the innovative and digital businesses who inhabit this
office space.
Inspired by the idea of block and chains, the dark grey suspended
lines run through the corridors sometimes breaking, sometimes
becoming light lines that enter the office’s spaces.

sIlVer deerThe idea behind Silver Deer store was the creation
of a common lighting scenario. Enhancing the
architectural structure, an element which hosts all the
engineerings and support of the space. By doing such
highlighting of the roughness of the space, the roof
disappears into a light changing scenario, as the effect
of the passing of a cloud in a sunny day from warm to
neutral light.
These effect is changing each 20 min during operation
hours. The control system and scenario helps reducing
a 50% of consumption of the installation. In a 900sqm

Casa Teo is a project of Chef Enrique Olvera, a renowned chef in
Mexico City which created a space for developing new ideas
around the dinning table. The table, the tablecloth, the dishes, the
cutlery, the utensils, are the main elements that make up the central
experience of this place. A place of gastronomic experiences.
The lighting project was based on the tablecloth. That sensory mantle

The appearance of a daylight gallery
whilst not raising the luminance levels
on objects. Ceiling treatment: Taking some
inspiration from the original decorative wall
lights we would propose a suspended light
track. Objective is to maximise daylight,
controlling natural daylight and solar gain.
We propose using illuminated ( lighbox)
signage at high level to draw the eye down
to each end of the gallery. In the same
lightbox language a new threshold, with
signage will signify entrance to the Jade
Gallery.

makes easier to integrate the lighting into
