At present, using subtractive manufacturing methods, the production of a 1 ton aircraft engine can consume over 6 ton of metal.In contrast, using additive manufacturing techniques, it is hoped to produce engines with close to a 100% materials utilization.

The nozzles are five times more durable than the previous model. 3D printing allowed engineers to design them as one part rather than 20 individual parts, reducing the number of brazes and welds that would have been necessary using traditional methods.
New business models
Italian company Barilla is looking to equip restaurants with 3D food printers, allowing customers to design and print their own custom pasta.
They want to be able to print 15-20 pieces of pasta in under two minutes.
According to reports, Barilla aims to offer customers cartridges of dough that they can insert into a 3D printer to create their own pasta designs.
