Lets take a look at the Uses of

Excel AGAIN

� A spreadsheet is the computer

equivalent of a paper ledger sheet.

I t consists of a grid made fromcolumns and rows.

� I t is an environment that can

make number manipulationeasy and somewhat painless.

T he math that goes on behind the scenes on the paper ledger can beoverwhelming. I f you change the loan amount, you will have to start

the math all over again (from scratch).

But lets take a closer look at the computer version.

�T he nice thing about using a

computer and spreadsheet is that you can experiment with numberswithout

having to RE-DOall the calculations.

�Let the COMPU T ER do the calculations! Once we have the

formulas set- up, we can change the variables that

are called from the formula and watch

the changes.

� S preadsheets are instantly updated if one of

the entries is changed.

�N O erasers! N O new formulas! N O calculators!

� S preadsheets are made up of

@columns

@rows@and their intersections

are called cells

� I n a spreadsheet the COLUMN is defined as the vertical space that

is going up and down the window.

� Letters are used to designate each COLUMN' S location.

In the above diagram the COLUMN labeled C is highlighted.

�I n a spreadsheet the ROW is defined as the horizontal space that is

going across the window. Numbers are used to designate each

location.

I n the above diagram the ROW labeled 4 is highlighted.

� In a spreadsheet the CELL is defined as the space where a

specified row and column intersect.

�Each CELL is assigned a name according to its COLUMN

letter and ROW number.

In the diagram on theleft the CELL labeled B6

is highlighted. When

referencing a cell, you

should put the column

first and the row

second.

Microsoft Office Button

T he Microsoft Office Button

performs many of the functions

that were located in the File

menu of older versions of

Excel. T his button allows you

to create a new workbook,

O pen an existing workbook,

save and save as, print, send,

or close.

Ribbon

T he ribbon is the panel at the top portion of the document I t has seven tabs: Home,

I nsert, Page Layouts, Formulas, Data, Review, and V iew. Each tab is divided into

groups. T he groups are logical collections of features designed to perform function that

you will utilize in developing or editing your Excel spreadsheets.

Active C ell

I n an Excel 2007 worksheet, the cell with the black outline. Data is always

entered into the active cell.

C olumn Letter

C olumns run vertically on a worksheet and each one is identified by a letter

in the column header.

Formula Bar

Located above the worksheet, this area displays the contents of the active

cell. I t can also be used for entering or editing data and formulas.

Name Box

Located next to the formula bar, the Name Box displays the cell reference or

the name of the active cell.

Row Number

Rows run horizontally in an Excel 2007 worksheet and are identified by a

number in the row header.

S heet T ab

S witching between worksheets in an Excel 2007 file is done by clicking on the

sheet tab at the bottom of the screen.
