Summary:
Aim: What is the degree of dissemination of the SE report in a sample of European banks and what are its characteristics? Does the SE approach have an impact on the profitability of the banks? Results: the development of SE practices among banks in the future may manifest new impacts on the profitability that currently do not emerge. Perspectives: the recent application is the cause of the results obtained. We hope that the further development of stakeholder engagement practices can lead to improved outcomes and induce investors to choose companies that express their socially responsible behavior through such practices also.
3
Stakeholder engagement:
The activity of systematic involvement by a company of its stakeholders on issues that have the requirement of materiality or relevance is known as Stakeholder Engagement It is a strategic element in business management because: • improve the quality of relationships with internal and external
stakeholders; • build and maintain a solid reputation in the market; • SE is a socially responsible behavior that can induce to invest in firms
implementing it. In this sense, stakeholder engagement can lead to the development of SRI.
4
1. What is the degree of dissemination of the SE report in a sample of European banks and what are its characteristics? Is the SE report included in other reports of banks? Is the report compliant with the international standard AA1000?
2. Does the SE approach have an impact on the profitability of the banks? In this respect, we want to study, using an econometric model, whether banks that are more active in terms of SE show better economic performance, in order to verify if SE is also an important element for their growth and stability.
Research questions
5
We followed the methodology of content analysis (Abbott and Monsen, 1979; Beattie and Thomson, 2007):
Methodology and research model/1
6
Four research areas of the model: • “Disclosure” deals with the communication of SE activities to the
public by the banks • “Stakeholders engaged” considers stakeholder mapping by the
banks and then identifies different classes of internal and external stakeholders
• “Instruments of engagement” provides a wide range of instruments with different levels of stakeholder involvement
• “Management of the SE process” focuses on basic organization and management aspects relevant to all stages of the process (planning and preparation, implementation and action, review and improvement)
7
The score (2 or 3) awarded for the “presence” increases if the item is complete and easily accessible, while the score is 1 in the case of absence. We calculate an SE rating for each bank in the sample to judge whether and how the banks carry out the SE process in all four observation profiles. Our SE rating is established by applying a specific normalization of the scores in order to consider the different number of items in each area. Besides the total SE rating, we calculated a partial rating for each area of the model to check where the banks in the sample are more active and performing.

The study sample consists of the first 30 European banks quoted on the stock market according to the classification of the European Banking Report (Association of Italian Banks, 2010), based on market capitalisation [1]. The banks analysed are mainly British, Swedish and French.
Results of the qualitative analysis/2
9
The average Stakeholder Engagement Rating, proxy of the intensity of the SE approach, is 54.41% and is barely acceptable: this result shows that the commitment to SE can be significantly increased, confirming the need to focus on management practices in particular.
The relationship between SE ratings and ROAA is not statistically significant and is in contrast with our expectation. The development of SE practices among banks in the future may show new impacts on profitability that currently do not emerge, due to the recent adoption of SE practices.

We concentrate our analysis on the following econometric equation:
10
Indipendent variables: Equity ratio, total asset, average interest rate, stakeholder engagement, cost income ratio, impaired loan ratio.
• Our findings contribute towards extending the current consensus about how the SE approach may affect bank profitability.
• We have formulated a model that turns a qualitative concept, SE, into a quantitative variable used in regression estimates aimed to verify the determinants of bank profitability.
• However, our study presents some limitations and may be subject to methodological improvements and further developments.

12
Summary:
13
14
Il campione di fondi SRI analizzato
“Green, Social and Ethical Funds in Europe”, Vigeo (2013): 922 fondi SRI;
Alcuni risultati dell’analisi
Presenza Logo Eurosif
57,61%
Logo sulla Trasparenza: utilizzo subordinato all’aggiornamento periodico e all’esaustività delle LGT.
Alcuni risultati dell’analisi/2
reperimento delle informazioni;
2. Casi di indisponibilità dei prospetti (e casi nei quali sul sito Eurosif è indicato il link ai siti delle Sgr);
3. Assenza di uniformità nella lingua di redazione delle LGT (circa il 53% dei fondi redige il documento adoperando la lingua madre, e la lingua inglese è totalmente assente nelle LGT redatte dai fondi italiani, francesi, tedeschi e austriaci);
4. Mancanza di un’esplicita richiesta a redigere le LGT distintamente per ciascun fondo SRI;
5. Non soddisfacente diffusione del Logo Eurosif;
