Phrasal Verbs

Like many grammars, we treat phrasal verbs as one kind of multiword verb. Other grammars may class all multiword verbs as "phrasal verbs".

The structure of a phrasal verb is:verb + adverb

Phrasal verbs can be:• Transitive (direct object)• Intransitive (no direct object)

Look at these examples of phrasal verbs:

the meeting.

turn down refuse They turned down

my offer.

intransitive get up rise from bed I don't like to get up.

 

break down cease to function He was late because his carbroke down.

 

Phrasal Verbs

1. Turn on: encender

This phrasal verb is used when you talk about to electrical light, appliances or middle of transport, etc.

Example: Marcos turns on the lights when he enters to the bedroom.

2. Turn down: Bajar el volumen

This is used when you have to decrease the volume in an appliance or in a stereo.

Example: Please! Turn down the volume to the radio, I am studying.

3. Run out: Terminarse o agotarse algo.

It is used to express that something is finished for example, the money, the ink, the paint and so on…

Example: I went to the store and I looked my wallet and my money ran out because I spent it in another things.

4. Turn off: Cerrar el agua.

This phrasal verb is used when you talk about close the faucet.

Example: Andrea, please turn off the water when you finish to brush your teeth.

5. Turn out: Apagar.

This phrasal verb is used when you talk of stop the electrical light service, appliances or middle of transport, etc.

Example: Mary turned out the stereo because she had a splitting headache.

6. Put off: Posponer, cancelar

This is used when you want to cancel something for example a meeting, an appointment, etc.

Example: Andrés called to put the meeting off, because her wife was sick.

7. Break down: Quebrar, dañar un auto.

This phrasal verb is used to talk about a crash in a car, when it is damaged.

Example: Carlos broke down his new car because he was drunk.

8. Jump up: Saltar del susto

It is used when somebody jumps for frightened.

Example: The woman jumped up when she looked some mice.

9. Break into: Entrar sin permiso.

This is used when someone enters any place without permission.

Example: The thieves broke into that apartment last night.

10. Take up: Empezar una nueva actividad

This is used when someone start an activity.

Example: My sister took horse riding up last year.
