Prior to any western contact, the Hawaiian
language was purely a spoken language. It
wasn’t until after 1820, with the arrival of the first
missionaries, that the Hawaiian language was put

The Hawaiian Alphabet
The Hawaiian alphabet system is known as the Pī'āpā. It may look like the
alphabet system that you are already familiar with; however, it is very different.
Good pronunciation of Hawaiian will come with a good understanding of the
sounds and each of the letters of the Pī'āpā. There are thirteen (13) letters.
