Project Purpose and Benefits

Comply with water quality standards.Reduce stormwater trash and bacteria pollution entering Ballona Creek and Santa Monica Bay.Reuse water where feasible.

270 acre watershed tributary area consisting of high‐density residential and commercial corridor.

Treatment Train:Trash collection, hydrodynamic separator, retention chamber, and disinfection facility.

Optimization & Corrective Actions

Implementing enhanced safety measures for Disinfection Building.Developed Standard Operating Procedures and training.Facility to be back online January 2013 Disinfection Building.

Installed storage for chlorine tables outside the building to minimize exposure to chlorine fumes. Project uses solid chlorine tablets for disinfection. 

Tablets stored in tubs and in locked blue container outside the building.

Installed a portable eyewash. Portable eyewash has fresh water to flush eyes if exposed to chlorine. Permanent system is being installed.

High Bacteria Level

Single sample is March 2012 showed high bacteria levels.This is expected since disinfection system was offline due to the safety issues.Project’s primary goal is to address bacteria in runoff.

Mar Vista Project Water Use

Reuse was not included in initial project due to lack of reuse guidelines.With new guidelines in place, a second phase is being designed to use clean water will be use for park irrigation by July 2013.

Eligibility of Reimbursement from State

Cost was fronted from City’s Prop O funds.State conducted final inspection and accepted the project in September 2011.State provided close out letter That City fulfilled all grant requirements in July 2012.State provided final reimbursement in September 2012.Correction underway are part of any normal construction project. 17
