This piece may be a little challenging to play, especially for the lower part, which requires frequent use of half-holing. However, you may want to try playing it with a friend NAF player. The two flutes will have to be in different keys, as shown below:

This version of this piece is easier to play because the player of the lower part will not need to do any half-holing. Also, the two flutes will be in the same key. The tradeoff is that they will sound in the same register, which was not the original intention of the composer.

Be Still My Soul Tablature, Rhythm, Fingering, and Lyrics • Lyrics: Katharina A. von Schlegel (1752) • Translated: Jane L. Borthwick (1855) • Melody: Jean Sibelius (1899) • Arranged for NAF by Robert Gatliff

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change, He faithful will remain.Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly FriendThrough thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertakeTo guide the future, as He has the past.Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still knowHis voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,And all is darkened in the vale of tears,Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repayFrom His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening onWhen we shall be forever with the Lord. When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.Be still, my soul: when change and tears are pastAll safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.

Be still, my soul: begin the song of praiseOn earth, believing, to Thy Lord on high;Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,So shall He view thee with a well pleased eye.Be still, my soul: the Sun of life divineThrough passing clouds shall but more brightly shine.

Arrangement Note: Only one note in the original melody did not fit the NAF. This note, the 2nd note of the 8thmeasure, was altered from a half-holing the bottom finger hole to simply repeating the note prior. This shouldwork fine if you are playing solo. If you are playing this melody along with other musicians, this substitutionmay not sound correct, i.e., fit their chord change at this note. In this case try substituting a C#, i.e., the samefingering as the 2nd note of the 7th measure. Alternatively, you could could half-hole the bottom finger hole butthe series of fingering of that measure would be awkward.

The House of the Rising Sun Tablature, Rhythm, Fingering, and Lyrics • Traditional • Arranged for NAF by Robert Gatliff

Arrangement Note: There seems to be as many variations in this melody as there are for its lyrics, which inthis case are the original lyrics from a female perspective. This arrangement keeps to a simplified rhythm andfingering. The third note was changed to avoid half-holing the bottom hole, and the closing phrase wasreworked so the entire piece would fit the range of the NAF.

Traditional Lyrics (continued):

If I had listened what Mama said, I'd be at home today. Being so young and foolish, poor boy, let a rambler lead me astray.

Go tell my baby sister never do like I have done To shun that house in New Orleans they call the Rising Sun.

My mother she's a tailor, she sewed these new blue jeans. My sweetheart, he's a drunkard, Lord, Lord, drinks down in New Orleans.

The only thing a drunkard needs is a suitcase and a trunk. The only time he's satisfied is when he's on a drunk.

Arrangement Note: This is just the first couple of passages from Rondeau that mostly fit the flute. The onlyexception is the highest note is barely out of range of most flutes, so this arrangement lowers that note by ahalf-step. Rondeau is also the source material for the theme music to PBS's Masterpiece Theatre.

Additional Verses

Hardest work I ever did, Was working on the farm, Easiest work I ever did Swing my true love's arm.

Chorus: Swing and turn, Jubilee, Live and learn Jubilee. Swing and turn, Jubilee, Live and learn Jubilee.

Coffee grows on a white oak tree, Sugar runs in brandy Girls as sweet as a lump of gold, Boys as sweet as candy.

Chorus

Some will come on Saturday night Some will come on Sunday, And if you give them half a chance They'll be back on Monday.

Chorus

Saddle up the old gray horse, Who will be the rider? Ride him down to the corner store And get a jug of cider.

If I had a needle and thread As fine as I could sew I'd sew my true love to my side And down this creek I'd go.

If I had no horse to ride I'd be found a-crawlin' Up and down this rocky roadLookin' for my darlin'.
