Lubricant Additive System and Aftermarket Additives

kasjaca.Jan.2011

Why additives?

Base oil alone is unable to meet the demands of a modern engine.

Additives add ‘new’ qualities necessary for specific applications.

Enhances existing qualities of the oil.

What are examples of additives?

• Friction Modifiers

• VI Improvers (VII)

• Pour Point Depressants (PPD)

• Seal-swell Controllers

• Oil Protectors

• Anti-oxidants

• Metal De-activators

• Anti-foam Agents• Surface Protectors• Anti-wear• Corrosion Inhibitors• Detergents• Dispersants• Friction Modifiers

Three Main Types of Additives

• ModifiersModify the characteristics of base oil to render it more suitable for use in engines

• Oil ProtectorsProtect the oil to prolong it’s working life

• Surface ProtectorsProtect metallic surfaces to reduce corrosion, friction, and wear

If Oil Additives are so Good Why Don’t the Oil Companies Make Them?

• Oil Companies make additives, but they don’t sell it as it is.• Many of the additives used in the aftermarket industry are

actually purchased from the oil companies.• The public is unaware of this though as most all oil companies

run their additive divisions as separate companies under their corporate umbrella. They include ExxonMobil.

• ExxonMobil has more than a hundred years of experience in lubricant and lubrication technology. They produce finished lubricants with carefully formulated additive system.

Why Don’t OEMs Recommend Oil Additives?

• OEMs have spent millions of dollars developing and protecting their engineering to insure that the engine, on average, lasts as long as they engineered it to last.

• OEMs trust their equipments’ performance from companies’ products whom they believe will not only improve its performance but also protect it.

Dr. Michael L. McMillanResearch Engineering, General Motors

"These supplemental aftermarket additives may upset the careful balance of additives already in engine oils, and actually cause engine harm, increase wear or adversely affect emissions or fuel economy. This is why General Motors specifically warns against the use of supplemental additives in owners manual recommendations to GM customers."
