Equipping God’s people for sharing in the ministry of Jesus Christ

A Message from the
Pastor…
Ogden Baptist Church
News and Happenings
The word, Gospel, means “Good News.” When you are preaching
the gospel, you are sharing the Good News that God sent his son,
Jesus Christ, to live among us and it is through his saving grace that
we are reconciled to God. Ahh, but when you are singing the Gospel, it
feels more personal, like a testimony, about how you experienced grace
and want to share it with everyone!
So it is no surprise that Gospel music is one of the ways in which
Christianity has spread to people all over the world. While the definition
of gospel music varies according to culture and context, it was thought
to be rooted in African American spirituals of the 17th century. The first
published use of the word “gospel song” was written by hymn writer,
Philip Bliss in 1874 to describe a new use of church music that was easy
to sing and more memorable.
Gospel swept through the revival movement in the 19th century
with soloist Ira D. Sankey, aka the “Sweet Singer” who accompanied
evangelist Dwight L. Moody, followed later by George Beverly Shea,
who sang at revivals with Billy Graham.
In the early 20th century, tambourines shifted to guitars as we
heard Andre Crouch, Mahalia Jackson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and the
Blackwood Brothers sing Gospel music that was richly influenced by the
Pentecostal tradition. Blues singer Tommy Dorsey would add his voice,
singing Precious Lord, Take my Hand. And of course, the singing of the
Gospel continues to this day!
Just wanted to stimulate your appetite for what’s to come here at
OBC on Pentecost Sunday, May 15 from 11am-1pm as we host a Gospel
BBQ Brunch. Invite a friend to come, listen, sing, tap a foot and have a
tasty lunch on us, catered by our friends at the Texas Bar-B-Q Joint and
paid for by our own Heavenly Soups earnings! Thank you Pat Haines!
Looking forward to all sharing at Pentecost. Can I get a witness?

Thank you to everyone for your work on cleaning the church inside and out on April 30th. Many hands make the work go more easily. You are a tremendous crew!
Thank you Tom Cole for acquiring and installing the new mailbox!
OBC Kids Update Pentecost is almost here! There has been speculation but no one has guessed who their Pew Pal might be. The children get excited to receive mail and to send gifts, crafts and letters to
their Pew Pals. As part of our Pentecost celebration the children will meet their Pew Pals face to face and have a
chance to ask questions and say hello in person! The program is a big hit!
Spring brings new life and inspires creative ways to connect across generations refreshing each of us as Christians and as
the Church. As we examine our own growth as Jesus’ disciples, reach out to a younger member; let them know that you’ve
seen them growing in their faith too!
Our study of the book of Acts has us learning the seven gifts of The Holy Spirit: Understanding, Wisdom, Knowledge, Courage,
Counsel, Piety, and Wonder.
Be sure to join us on Pentecost Sunday when the children will share a surprise project to help celebrate
the gift of the Holy Spirit!
