Over 50% of failures for critical loads are due to the electrical supply and the
hourly cost of downtime for the corresponding applications is generally
very high.
It is therefore vital for the modern economy, which is increasingly dependent on
digital technologies, to solve the problems affecting the quality and the
availability of the power supplied by the distribution system when it is
intended for sensitive loads
UPSs (uninterruptible power supply) are designed to meet the needs presented
above. First launched in the 1970s, their importance has grown in step
with the development of digital technologies.
UPSs are electrical devices that are positioned between the distribution system
and sensitive loads. They supply power that is much more reliable than the
distribution system and corresponds to the needs of sensitive loads in
terms of quality and availability.
The term UPS covers products with apparent power ratings from a few hundred
VA up to several MVA, implementing different technologies.

• Circulates power from Inverter, through SBS, into the PFC
• Each component is energized and loaded
• Can test 100% continuous load, or 110% for 10 min
• Inverter operated as current generator in phase with bypass
• PFC draws current to maintain DC bus, and adjust for losses
• UPS draws small amount from utility to adjust for losses
