GEOSYNTHETIC SOIL TECHNIQUE

by:Dandung S. Harninto

GEO = earth, soilSYNTHETIC = made by human

Geosynthetics =• A planar, polymeric (synthetic or natural)

material used in contact with soil/rock and/or any other geotechnical material, for Filtration,Drainage, Separation, Reinforcement, Protection, Sealing and Packing.

Bases Functions

• Drainage, to collect and transport fluids

>> geodrain>> prefabricated vertical drain

Bases Functions

• Filtration, to allow passage of fluids while preventing passage of soil particles

>> non woven geotextiles

Bases Functions• Protection, to prevent damage of a

layer

>> non woven geotextiles

Bases Functions• Reinforcement, to improve the shear

resistance of a soil

>> geogrids,>> high strength woven geotextiles

Bases Functions• Separation, to maintain the integrity of a soil

layer

>> non woven geotextiles>> woven geotextiles>> combination geogrids and non woven

Bases Functions• Erosion control, to prevent soil

erosion by water or wind forces

>> geomats

Bases Functions• Barrier, to prevent the migration of

liquids orgases

>> GCL>> geomembranes

Bases Functions• Containing, to cover soil or sand to prevents

of scouring

>> non woven geotextiles>> woven geotextiles

GEOSYNTHETIC REINFORCED SOIL TECHNIQUE

GEOSYNTHETIC REINFORCED SOIL TECHNIQUE

The soil reinforcement by geosynthetics generatesa mechanical improvement of the soil bysupporting tensile forces. The reinforcing elementsare flexible and, due to their low bendingstiffness, can only absorb axial tensile loads. Theimprovement acts to reduce the shear force thathas to be carried by the soil, and to enhance theshearing resistance in the soil by increasing thenormal stress acting on potential shear surfaces.
