THE CITY TO UPDATE Commercial Comlpex Design
In the high-speed process of a typical Chinese city development, demolition and construction encompass the full life cycle of a building. The so-called historical preservation is mostly hypothetical. But from a different angle, demolition and construction can also bring new change to a building.

As the graphs on the rightside shows the range
of Taiyuan City has increased more than 7 times
during the latest 40 years. As a consequence, lots of villages loocated in suburbs before now have been
included in the urban area, such as Yingze which is
in the northwest part of Hangzhou.
The site location of project is in a village in Taiyuan, which has been a particular phenomenon caused in China’s urbanization process since late 20 century, and has a profound impact on urban development. The problems of hygienic situation, population compositon, greening and landscaping, and architectural images involved in VICs have made them quite disharmonic views of moderncities. This design work tries to give some transformation posibilities on the architectural level.

Length and width of the site is 9m×9m and the high is 3 floors.
Fill the space with a 9m×9m×9m residence box.
Divide the space into three parts for a three-poople family.
Define private spaces and public spaces by functions.

Quadrangle is a typical Chinese traditional residence. It has a strict functional distinction within the residence area. After surveying the existing rural houses, I noticed that these houses, which lack functional district, are inconvenient for residents. Therefore, in this project, I divide the entire building into 4 equal layers horizontally, one for yard and the others for residence. Furthermore, vertically, I put the first layer for public activities, and the above are used as a private space (e.g., work and rest). I hope that space efficiency of the house will be improved in such way.

SITE ANALYSIS
Our site is located in the west of Taiyuan University of Technology, and the plants are very green and the air is very dry here. The isite is west to the centre axis form the university gate and the main building, next to the machanical building and had a littele difference on the site height.
Our goal is to provide a very smart solution to conect the exhibition area and the public space and at the same time keep the remarkable outlooking for the building itself for both the university people and the visitors. Nevertheless how to combine the circulation and the space organization with the site height difference is also a task for us to conauer.
The current issues in the site we should take into concern are the followings: the dull space feeling of the campus, the all samelooking uilding in the same mixed style, the lack of interaction space which could provide the possitive and communicating atmosphere for the university boys, girls and teachers.
MASTER PLAN
The space we want to creat for the exhibition hall has two sides. The out space around the centre the is a bit higher than the indoor first floor. which result in the outdoor circulation is separated in vertical direction and the indoor space is also separated by different “floatting”
floors and in this way the constant space changing feeling is continued form outdoor to indoor.
The highlight of this design is that we use the constantly reducing floor height covered thiis 1m height difference form the west site to the east. In this way, the indoor space is the space without the traditional floor defined space. This exhibition space is free form without restrain form the floors which bring the
special interior space feeling to the visitors and the university people.
The concept for the section design is that using the current height difference of the site to create a terrace space form with reduceing the floor height once by once till we get the free flow space for the circulation
The original concept for the elevation design is to use the vertical stripes to create the image of division and breaking. Through changing the size of the vertical windows, the building was highlighted with friendly lookings which active the whole campus.

SITE
Nanjing is a subtropical humid monsoon climate zone, with mild climate, four distincted seasons, hot summer and cold winter, rainfall, adequate light, rich in calories, the characteristics of the hot rainy season.
The average annual temperature is about 15 degrees, the coldest in January 2.4, the hottest month average July temperature is 27.8 degrees.
The design requirements is about designing a centre which contains gallery, library, playroom and auditorium.
The site is in the Foshou Lake Scenic Area Pukou District of Nanjing City, northeast of Lakeview, the west is the main road traffic, and the south is footpath.
The concept for the Craft Center is to bring the site into the building. In order to achieve this. two major strategies were applied.First. creating views to the outside and second by establishing an interior and exterior relationship. The inspiration came from the vast views on the site. which slopes gradually from Wild Creek Road to rows of trees along the border.
Design description
The part consists of two large rectangular forms and a curved line. This was translated into a retaining wall which extends out to a trail. With this part, spaces can be created above and below the ground allowing for a clear separation of public and private spaces giving spatial hierarchy.
The structure of the craft center is a combination of heavy and light systems. Steel frames along with columns and beams make up the light structures. while the heavy structures is seen in concrete and limestone. The light structures help define the public spaces and the heavy structures define the semi public and private spaces. MINI PAVILIONCardboard structure competition
The structure design competition held every year is our university is to inovating the architectural method through creating a new structure based on a specific material such as cardboard.
The pavilion is somehow generated by the matierial itself. We folded the big size cardbord when it could stably stand on the ground itself and then we cut it to achive the sapce requirement we need.
In the pavilion, the inclined roof provide different space feeling for people in different ctions. People can always find a suitable position for himself to do something and the pavilion is like a smart cover for every visitor.
