Liceo Celio-Roccati is the result of Liceo Celio

and Istituto Roccati which merged together into

one school in 1995. The 2 schools share three

different buildings in the town centre.

ORIGINS

• THE ORIGINS OF “LICEO GINNASIO CELIO” :

The history of Classical Studies in Rovigo began on the 17th

December 1860.The official name , “Liceo Ginnasio Celio” was granted by theking of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II on the 29th September 1867,as a sign of gratitude to Ludovico Ricchieri. This man wascalled the “Celio” of Rovigo. He had lived between the XV andXVI century. He was very famous for his extensive competencein humanistic and historical studies. The “Liceo Celio” hasbeen situated in Badaloni Street since 1897.

The study of foreign modern languages was added only in 1995.In 2011 it celebrated the 150th anniversary from its foundation.

ORIGINS

• THE ORIGINS OF “LICEO MAGISTRALE ROCCATI”:

This institute began its activity in 1889.The name of Cristina Roccati was added only thenext year. This woman, who had lived in 1700, wasvery famous because she was the first woman inItaly who got a degree. She was a poetess and shewas also interested in scientific subjects, mainly asregards physics. .

CELIO’S COURSESIn Celio school there are two different courses.• CLASSICAL STUDIES: Latin and Greek are the most

important subjects in this course. They include the study of other cultures, that are fundamental for western civilization.The Classical studies course is suitable for students who wish to read, to write, to reflect and to know.

• LANGUAGE COURSE: In this course students have to learn four foreign languages, that are English, French, German and Spanish. There are also mother tongue assistants. This kind of course is part of a solid cultural framework. The historical-literary part is reinforced by the study of Latin.

ROCCATI’S COURSES

• SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL PEDAGOGIC COURSE: The aim of this course is to continue in University a course to become a teacher in any kind of school. Students have to do work experiences, for example in nursery and primary schools,... They also study Latin.

• SOCIAL SCIENCES COURSE:

In this course there are two different kinds of study:

• Community Study: students work on themes of social integration

• Communication Study: concentrates on the contemporary phenomena of our society.

• ARTS COURSE

In this course there are two different kinds of study too:

• Figurative Art Study: here the aim is the acquisition of means for pictorial and sculptural expression

• Graphic Study: students have a preparation about visual communication for graphics.

TIMETABLE

In the first two years of all the courses there are between 27 and 34 hours of lessons. In the next three years, there are between 30 and 35 hours of lessons per week. The differences depend on the type of course.

the morning, in general, is divided into 5 lessons with a

short break between 10 : 50 and 11:00 a.m. The schedule

changes according to the different courses. In general, in

the first two years of each course lessons finish

at 13:30 two days a week ; the other days normally finish

at 13:00.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

School holidays last for about three months. They start in

middle of June and finish in September.

LABORATORIES

In the three buildings of the Celio-Roccati High

School there are:

• 3 multimedia computer labs

• 1 Language Laboratory

• 2 Physics laboratories,

• 1 chemistry laboratory and

• 1 School hall with stage

• 1 graphics Laboratory

LABORATORIESCELIO’S COMPUTER LAB

• The computer lab of Celio, opened on April 27, 2005,was dedicated to prof. Flaminio De Poli, a former teacher and headmaster. Equipped with a large screen projector system support and stereo speakers, it has 25 multimedia workstations with internet access.

LABORATORIESROCCATI’S COMPUTER LAB

• In the Roccati computer room, , there are 25 computers with Internet access. A screen and projector are available.In the lab, studentsstudy computer science, statistics, multimedia technology and mathematics. TheyPrepare projects, hypertexts for curricularactivities, work experience, for the state exam. The computer room can also be usedby the local community.(Open University, etc..)

LABORATORIESPALAZZO CAMPO’S COMPUTER LAB

• This lab is in another part of the school ( “Palazzo Campo”) and it has 25 computers with Internet access. The installedsoftware allows for educational activities that relate to the classical languages, Greek and Latin, modern languages, mathematics, computer science and physics.

LABORATORIESPHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY LABS

• Both Roccati and Celio have twolarge equipped laboratories for experiments in physics, chemistry and science. The school hasinstruments that are both valuable historicalobjects, and the latest kind of instruments. The Celio building also has a mini-theaterwith a projector and screen.

LABORATORIESLANGUAGE LAB

• The language lab at Celio was inagurated in 2006 and it is dedicated to a former teacher of the school. There are 15 computers withinternet access and 30 workstations for audio-visual activities. It is used mainly by studentsin the language course but it is also availableto the students of the classical studies course.

SCHOOL PROJECTS• Exhibitions. Especially organized by the Arts course• Summer work placements for students of year 4• Work experience round the year (social studies

course)• Optional courses in archaeology and architecture

(arts course)• A course to sensitize students’ to classical music

and opera (classical studies course)• Esabac (liceo linguistico) starting next year.It will

give a high school diploma recognized by the French Ministry of Education

THE CHOIR

The Celio’s youth choir was founded in November 1999. It now includes more than 50 singers, between current and former students of school and it has participated in many concerts, both in Rovigo and abroad in a number of school choir exchanges. It has a repertoire in foreign languages, with songs from both the popular and the classical tradition. T The members of the choir are committed to the creation of musical performances on important occasions during the year, such as the Christmas concert.

DramaIn the school a few drama

groups have been working over the years in both Celioand Roccati schools: two drama groups performing in Italian, and until last year two groups performing in Spanish and German. Directed by teachers but completely self-organized in the setting up of the performances they are truly the students’ work. By the end of every year each group performs a play for the whole school and families in a local theatre or in the school assembly hall.

CULTURAL EXCHANGES

Cultural exchange activities have characterized our school ever since 1996.

Over the years we have been in touch withFrance,Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany,Spain, Great Britain, Finland either throughself-organized exchanges or European-fundedprogrammes, such as Comenius.

LANGUAGE COURSES ABROAD

Over the past 10 years manyone-week language courseshave been organized abroad.They provide schoolattendance together withfamily accommodation. Life within a family allowsstudents to know differentlife styles and to practicelanguage in real situations,Over time relationships havebeen established with some foreign schools(Cannes,Salamanca,Salisburgo, Valencia) .

EXTERNAL CERTIFICATIONS

Since 1999-2000 students of the final classes ofCelio courses have been encouraged to take part inexams for the certification of skills in foreignlanguages. The aim of the project is to allowstudents to get a “European certificate for their knowledge of foreign languages”,through an examination that certifies the level ofcompetence achieved in any of theforeign languages studied: English, French,Spanish and German.

MATHS OLYMPICS

Students who usually attend the Olympics are

those who have the results in maths.

Students attend courses to upgrade their skills and take a final examination which qualifies the level achieved by the student.
