    The Novel and the Death of Story-tel ling

    Summ ary

    T he tex t deal s w i th th e relat i on betw een oral narr at i on and w r i t ten

    narration 'm The Damned Yard. Unlike recent explorations of this topic, in

    this paper the author emphasizes the very tension between these two kinds

    of narration in the novel. This tension arises from Andric's logocentrism.

    Consequently, the oral narration in his novel is given advantage over the

    written one, in spite of the fact that this advantage depends on the text.

    Yet, the novel itself deconstructs the deconstruction of A ndri's novel .

    Namely, the opening scene symbolizes the condition of pantextualism,

    anticipated by Derrida 's deconstruction. Moreover, the attr ibutes of the

    oral narration of f ra-Petar describe the endless story. In this symbolic

    way, oral narration in Andri's The Damned Yard opposes itself to the

    death of the narrator/story in the modern novel, but it also anticipates

    thepostmodern kind of never-ending

    " bookJreading or, moreprecisely,

    The Book of Sand written by Jorge Louis Borges, and Pavi's Dictionary

    of the Khazar .
