Queen Anne’s County Public Schools New Construction of the

Matapeake Middle School

Entrance canopy reflects a nautical theme apropos of the Maryland shore locale.

Upon entering the school all visitors are directed through the administration office for security reasons.

Administration office and secure entrance leads out onto the promenade.

The “promenade” that forms a ship’s hull extends from the main entrance through the back entrance of the building and separates the public use spaces from the main academic portions of the building.

Entrances to the Guidance and Music Suites from the promenade.

Choral music room.

Band music room.

Multi-purpose room combines a gymnasium and auditorium for small and large groups. The gym can be divided by a retractable curtain and the stage can be closed off with a folding partition for use as an auxiliary gym/fitness center or additional rehearsal space.

Media center entrance from corridor.

Media center reading area.

Media center stacks and study area with natural light from the exterior courtyard.

Media center includes teaching, study, and reference areas as well as access to computer labs, work rooms and both main corridors of the building.

A computer room is located adjacent to the media center for research and writing instruction.

Art room is adjacent to the exterior courtyard for natural light and outdoor sketching area.

The courtyard creates a small gathering/teaching space as well as allowing natural light in to the media center and art classroom. Use of crushed shells as mulch and stamped concrete in “wave” patterns perpetuate the nautical theme.

The cafeteria is located off the main promenade for easy access by students

and off-hour use by the public.

Natural lighting in the cafeteria.

Science classroom.

Non-tidal wildlife area behind the building provides an outdoor environmental classroom.
