UNICO.
PETRACER’S.
Tradizionalmente ispirati.
Inspired by tradition.
This new edition of Papille is a tribute to inspiration – and its results. It is also a tribute to anyone who has the ability (or is it a gift?) to be inspired by something and transform it into something else: a new form of beauty that can be enjoyed by many other people. This is what has made Italian craftsmanship into a tradition and a value recognised worldwide. It is instantly recognisable, from the very beginning of the process which culminates in such high quality designs and products: creativity, in other words. Yet history has taught us that any tradition, no matter how great, is destined to vanish if it is not updated. This is the risk now facing Italian design, threatened because that original spirit of excellence and the courage needed to pursue new directions is becoming increasingly hard to fi nd. I must fi rst of all thank all those who contributed to Papille 2009 and all those people who, like them, can create new forms of beauty and ways of enjoying it. Finally, I would also like to thank all those who work in the name of our great tradition and allow themselves to be guided by that magical breath of inspiration, without being led astray by the fragile winds of fashion.

TB BUTIThe lords of time. TB BUTI
Tommaso Buti.
“Beauty is timeless. It does not fear time, rather makes it its own”. This defi nition of beauty is certainly
befi tting for a watchmaker such as Tommaso Buti, founder of TB BUTI, a brand which has carved a worldwide reputation for itself in just a few years.Updating a wristwatch, known in marketing speak as the ultimate ‘mature product’ in other words with a miniscule amount of room for positioning, is not for everyone. The location (Florence) certainly helps, but most important is the ability to draw inspiration from this beautiful Italian setting in order to create something new. This goal was achieved by re-elaborating tradition by using and combining new materials, but also by re-designing the actual parts of the watch, such as the strap fi ttings, in a deliberately decorative way.
1312Collezione Unique, con cassa in oro 18 k e lunetta con brillanti.
Collection UNIQUE, with case in 18 carats gold and bezel with diamonds.
The brand philosophy could almost be called neo-Renaissance, truly Florentine: a high-level craft workshop with absolute mastery of techniques and materials, offering new style solutions. The movements of these watches, all made from Swiss technology, are assembled in a workshop in Florence, home to a team of craftsmen chosen because of their enthusiasm for the job. The cases, faces and straps are the fi eld in which the company develops its creativity, but always according to a design concept which aspires to fi ne craftsmanship.

Collezione Black Rain in titanio nero.Collection Black Rain in black titanium.
The cases, made in three parts all taken from the full piece, are made from steel, gold, black, blue or sanded titanium. On the faces, even the simplest, most masculine models are a tribute to luxury: hands with natural, brilliant-cut, hand-fi tted diamonds. A very recent success from TB BUTi is the development of a solid carbon watch. The Stealth project took two years of research in collaboration with Andreoli, a leading Italian watch company. With a pure carbon case, this model completely eliminates the fragility of carbon while preserving its extreme lightness and aesthetic appeal. This unique technological conquest demanded huge investments, unprecedented in the industry precisely because of the problems involved in working with carbon. These problems, once overcome, led to the creation of a model with a unique style and character. It involved more than just technology, however. It also required stylistic innovation, through the expert craftsmanship that denotes a real Italian product. The personal passions of Tommaso Buti (a keen collector of fi ne art and wine) also dovetail perfectly with the Italian lust for life. But how does a creator of beauty, surrounded by more beauty, experience the inexorable march of time? “I don’t think we ever have enough time. I have no regrets, but I would certainly love to have had my present experience twenty years ago”.

VIICOSTANZA CONSTANT EFFORT
What do an arabesque, quilted
upholstery, two horses galloping
fl at out, a classic striped wallpaper,
a spiral, the shades of a rock, the
sea and boats all have in common? Nothing, to the
distracted eye. For Petracer’s and Angelo Marchesi,
however, they can all arouse a deep-seated emotion, to
be transformed into magnifi cent ceramic creations.
Decorative themes ranging from the classic to the
contemporary, for a concept of tiling that dates back
to the ancient origins of the art of ceramics, when
this noble material was used to tell stories through
decoration. The essence of these collections is the
story of a life of passion, instinct and the courage to
do the unthinkable. They are the passions of Angelo
Marchesi who founded the company, taking it to
amazing heights of success in just a decade. When
the company started out, almost nobody would
have backed this idea, yet today there are many
competitors inspired by the Petracer’s styles and
shapes. In the mid-1990s, when minimalism reigned
supreme, offering an absolutely démodé collection
like Grand Elegance with its exquisite decorations
might have seemed rash, to say the least. Yet, now as
then, it is one of the most popular and in-demand
collections - a sure sign that Petracer’s understood
how to please a niche market of enthusiasts who
had hitherto only dreamed of seeing much-loved
ideas being transformed into ceramics. The future
creations, to which the fi nishing touches are now
being added, demonstrate an ability to stop and
wonder at the forms of Nature or tradition and
create or renew them through ceramics. Soon to be
released is “Unico”, a fascinating, overstated large
format based on a reinterpretation of the Provençal
tile, together with a new, as yet unnamed, collection
formed of large boiserie-style panels. Extremely
sophisticated and surprising, and made from
ceramics, of course.
L’insieme
come Grand Elegance, squisitamente decorativa e
del tutto demodè. Eppure, allora come oggi è que-
vedere trasposti in ceramica temi tanto amati.
grandi pannelli creati in forma boiserie. Elegantissi-

Culture is not just the total sum of human
knowledge. Culture is innovation, in the
sense of the result, not the discipline.
Innovation is what has distinguished the life
of Oliviero Toscani – fi rst of all for himself,
starting with his job as a photographer, his
work as a wine grower and fi nally, horses.
Toscani’s adventures with horses started out
as a risk, a dream: the Appaloosa. Even before
these animals were adopted as the faithful
companions of Native Americans, they were
the fruit of a free interpretation of the human
imagination. The fi rst dappled horses were
the children of invention: they were found
in France, several thousand years earlier
than in America, on a wall painted in the
caves of Lascaux and Perche-Merle. They
were dreams, visions of something
that really was produced by Nature,
years later. Toscani took a risk
by daring to imagine that they
could be taken out of their native
land. He was the fi rst to bring
Appaloosa to Italy and embark
on this adventure with them.
This marked the beginning of
one of Italy’s largest stables,
containing dozens of Quarter
Horses, magnifi cent animals
whose blood is a melting
pot of different cultures.
Quarter horses combine
passion, speed, elegance and
effi ciency. Toscani’s stables
can be summarised in the
two words used by Americans
to describe the nature of a
quarter horse: “good mind”.
This means more than just
intelligence, but also versatility,
openness, attention to the perfect
understanding between man and
horse.
La cultura non è solamente il complesso
delle conoscenze possedute dall’uomo.
La cultura è innovazione, intesa come
risultato e non come disciplina. L’innovazione
Toscani.
appaloosa. Questi, ancor prima di essere i
grandi compagni dei nativi del Nord America,
sono frutto di una libera interpretazione
dell’immaginazione umana. I primi cavalli
I quarter
dell’eccellenza. L’eccellenza come conseguenza

posto varie volte in competizioni internazionali.
Quality is the distinctive trait of the stables
and can only be obtained through the constant
pursuit of excellence. Excellence is the result
of attention to detail, absolute concentration
right from the early stages of buying stallions
and brood-mares from the best centres in the
world. The team is led by Oliviero’s son Rocco
Toscani, whose reining experience, despite his
tender age, is almost unique in Italy. On the
estate at Casale Marittimo, Rocco coordinates
trainers and assistants, all pieces of the
jigsaw that makes up a team of professionals
that has already won several international
fi rsts. Oliviero and Rocco Toscani’s journey
on horseback has distant origins, from their
discovery of the horses of the American
Redskins through to the development of one
of Europe’s fi nest reining arenas. As Rocco
Toscani says: “my father was the fi rst person to
understand how extraordinary the Appaloosa
are”. What distinguishes the Toscanis’ work is
a hint of folly that drives their curiosity. They
make no distinctions between their work as
photographers, wine growers, breeders and
trainers. Everything is held together by a
desire to investigate, discover and learn. They
see nothing as a hobby or a pastime, purely as
work, and a passion for life.

Tuscany is a magical region - a land of
artists and craftsmen who have forged
its culture. Three thousand years ago,
it was here that the Etruscans developed the
art of ceramic production and it is here, in the
beautiful Chianti region, that the Ceccarelli
family has produced fi ne terracotta for three
generations. This ancient art has become
contemporary, absolutely undaunted by the
thousand innovations invented to combat
globalisation. Everyone wants a Ceccarelli
product: tables, stoves, lamps, vases, plates and
statues. Ceccarelli ceramics are sought after by
the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Russians and
Americans. With each product, the customer is
buying a little piece of history and the expert
craftsmanship that comes from a tradition that
is the only one of its kind in the world. These
handmade objects enhance people’s daily lives
and even the simplest of gestures. Our concept
of decoration dates back to ancient times and
decrees that decoration is the art of making
everyday things beautiful.
tre generazioni produce prestigiose terrecotte.
vasi, piatti, statue.
Le ceramiche Ceccarelli sono richieste da
giapponesi, cinesi, coreani, russi, americani.
Oggetti
nuove proposte.

Our company’s history is based on this tradition which it brings up to date by
developing new ideas. Our studio is a sheer delight for ceramics enthusiasts
and could not be more different from a factory environment. We sing while
we work with our hands, surrounded by colours and sketches. The Ceccarelli
catalogue now lists about 500 products. Particularly distinctive are the large
vases and lamps, yet every product has a harmonious beauty about it.
conta oggi circa 500 oggetti.
Chianti: calle, gigli, malva, campanule, farfalle.

We are inspired by traditional shapes – cherubs, nymphs and
mermaids - or by the natural beauty found in such abundance
in the Chianti region: callas, lilies, mallow, bell fl owers and
butterfl ies. Ceccarelli brings an ancient world to life by using
veneering techniques that give an aged look to our products - but
that is all we can say. The formula is a family secret!

To tell you this story, we should have gone a little further back in time.
After all, what we do is down to our being children, even today.
We never feel that we have sailed far enough, but we know
when to break loose from our moorings to look at things with new eyes.
We can still marvel at things,
because we are not bridled by habit.
Now as then, we play with colour and think we have infi nity within reach,
when we manage to transform a small room into a very special place.
We never stop feeling small,
