INTRODUCTION

Shyam Benegal ( born 14 December 1934) is an Indian director and screenwriter.

He created a new genre, which has now come to be called the "middle cinema" in India.

He prefer his work to be called as “ New or Alternate cinema”.

EARLY CARRER

In 1959, he started working as a copywriter at a Bombay-based advertising agency, Lintas Advertising, where he steadily rose to become a creative head.

Benegal made his first documentary in Gujarati, Gher Betha Ganga (Ganges at Doorstep) in 1962.

In 1963 he had a brief stint with another advertising agency called ASP.

1966 and 1973, Shyam taught at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

served as the institute's chairman: 1980–83 and 1989–92.

Benegal as a new film maker can not properly release cinema due to lack of producer.

He directed serials like yatra on 1986 for indian railways.

His one of the biggest project was bharat ek khoj, in 1988.

He also served as a director of N.F.D.C from 1980-1986.

He releases mandi which was one of the most popular feature film in his career.

In 1985 he was the member of jury at 14th Moscow international film festival.

BENGAL WORKS(90’S)

In 90’s he started making a trilogy on Indian Muslim women, including Mammo (1995), Sardari Begum (1996), and Zubeidaa (2001).

In 1992, he made Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (Seventh Horse of the Sun) based on a novel by Dharmavir Bharati, which won the 1993 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

In 1996 he made another film based on a book, The Making of the Mahatma.

He criticised the Indian caste system in Samar (1999) which went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.

Benegal is the current president of the Federation of Film Societies of India. He owns a production company called Sahyadri Films

RECENT PROJECTS

He turn to biographical material resulted in Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten hero in 2005.

In 2009 he was a member of the jury at the 31st Moscow International Film Festival.

In 2008, his film Welcome to Sajjanpur, starring Shreyas Talpade and Amrita Rao, was released to a good response.

In March 2010, Benegal released the political satire Well Done Abba.

MESSAGES

His first four feature films Ankur, Nishant, Manthan and Bhumika he created a new genre.

In “Ankur” he analyzes the basic human behavior.

His films were also based on rural empowerment rural development for example “manthan”.

His films were also based on life stories and biographies for example “Bhumika”, “Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero”

Some of his were also based on social issues such as caste system (sammar),and also based on political satire(.

Many of his films were also based on family wars, emotions for the families .

He also visualized how can a people can achieve their own dream through his movie “welcome to sajjanpur” .

ACHEIVEMENTS

He received national film award for best screen play in 1978 for “BHUMIKA”.

He received national film –special jury award in 1996 for “The making of Mahatma”.

He received national film award as a best director for trikal in 1986.

He received national film award on other social issues mfor well done abba in 2000.

He received national film award for best biographical film for “Satyajit Ray” in 1986.

He received national film award again for best film in family welfare in 2000 for “Hari-bhari:fertility”.

He also received padmashree in 1976 ,padmabhusan in 1991 as well as Dadasaheb phalke award in 2007.

In 2008 he was awarded as iifa for Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema (Male).

In 2013 , he received ANR national award.

As a director, screen player his works were incredible . After his death we will remind him from his works.
