Summer Projects 2015
Portugal,�one�of�the�oldest�countries�in�Europe,�is�located�in�
the�southwest�of�the�Iberian�Peninsula�lying�between�Spain�in�
the�north�and�east,�and� the�Atlantic�Ocean� in� the�south�and�
west.�The�signs�of�the�Portuguese�presence�around�the�world�
are�still�visible�and�this�is�the�reason�why�Portuguese�is�one�of�
the�most�spoken�languages�worldwide�and�the�Portuguese�are�
one�of�the�peoples�more�open�to�other�civilizations.�Portugal�
has� been� a� Republic� since� 1911� and� its� government� is� a�
Parliamentary�Democracy.�A�member�of�the�European�Union�
(EU)�since�1986,�Portugal� is�a�nation�in�full�development�that�
has� always� kept� its� best� treasure� -� its� ability� to� welcome�
people.�This�makes�this�country�an�attractive�and�safe�place.
Despite� being� a� relatively� small� country� (516Km� long� and�
218Km�wide),�the�Portuguese�natural�heritage�is�extremely�rich�
and�diverse�In�the�northwest,�there�are�green�fertile�valleys�
and�tree-covered�mountains�while�vast�areas�of�high�plateaus�
predominate�in�the�northeast.�Along�the�western�coast�as�far�
as�Lisbon�the�topography�is�a�mixture�of�lowlands�and�bays.�
Moving�south�the�landscape�starts�to�change�to�a�uniform�low�
relief.� In�the�south�lies�the�popular�tourist�destination�of�the�
Algarve.

Nine� out� of� ten� Portuguese� people� are�
Roman�Catholic,�making�it�one�of�the�most�
socially�conservative�nations�in�the�world.
The� Montado� landscape� of� Portugal�
produces� more� than� 50%� of� the� world’s�
cork�exports.
The� world� record� for� the� largest� dining� table�
was� set� when� around� 15� 000� people� were�
served� lunch� on� the� bridge� as� part� of� the�
inauguration�celebrations.
At�17�kms�long,�the�Vasco�da�Gama�Bridge�
in�Lisbon�is�the�longest�bridge�in�Europe.
In� 1761,� Portugal� was� the� first� colonial�
power�to�abolish�slavery�–�half�a�century�
before�Britain,�France,�Spain,�or�the�USA!

ativaAtiva�is�a�project�created�just�to�cooperate�with�Brazil�mostly�that�wants�to�bring�the�brasilian�
warmness�to�Portuguese�nursery�homes�to�show�them�a�different�perspective�and�role�the�elders�
can�have�in�society.�Also�to�communicate�with�the�elders�we�require�portuguese�speakers.

activities during the project1-�Trainning�Days-�There�will�be�trainning�days�to�support�the�interns�in�their�journey.�This�includes�LEAD�for�EPs�and�
preparation�for�the�working�activities.
2-�IRW�(International�Reception�Weekend)-�AIESEC�provides�a�weekend�in�a�portuguese�city�to�all�the�trainnes�with�cultural�
activities�and�fun�moments.
3-�Final�Event�-�The�final�event�will�held�he�interns�that�have�participated�in�the�project�in�order�to�understand�what�were�
their�key�learning�points�after�the�internship.

Why?In�Portugal�60%�of�the�elderly�population�
lives�abandoned�and�
9,9%�of�portuguese�elderly�are�below�the�
poverty�index.�The�
lack�of�knowledge�in�how�to�use�new�
technology�are�making�
them�day�by�day�more�abandoned.
2020 projectPortugal�will�be�a�country�in�which�the�youth�sees�the�value�of�education�and�have�the�right�attitude�and�skills�to�
pursue�a�career�in�the�field�of�their�choice.�Due�to�this,�Portugal�will�be�one�of�the�countries�with�the�lowest�dropout�
rates�and�youth�unemployment,�because�young�people�will�be�entrepreneurial�and�responsible.

Why?In�Portugal,�according�to�the�last�
governamental�report,�the�school�drop
out�rate,�sits�at�20,8%�(region�average�is�
12,8%),�while�the�youth�unemployment�is�at�
37,7%�(region�average�is�23%).�Also,�the�
government�of�Portugal�developed�a�long�
term�plan�to�act�upon�this��issue.
