Encryption
Hello!

Hello!
Encoder ring
Need to convey three facts Time Place Artifact
Encoder will give you a code word for each part of a sentence Noun Adjective Verb
Secret spy | player one
Uses the decoder ring Writes three sentences
One sentence is the real code Two are decoys
Can’t use other code words in sentences
Example
Original words Time: 2am Place: The Louvre Artifact: Mona Lisa
Encoded words Noun: jeans Adjective: bellbottom Verb: to run
Final message Today I saw this hippie running in bellbottom jeans. Old school.
CIA agent | player two
On TV I saw that crazy actress got another DWI.
I’m gonna skip that boring class today. Today I saw this hippie running in
bellbottom jeans.
Challenges
At the beginning, the CIA agent is just guessing
Need a lot of data for patterns to emerge How can we simplify or signify this process
in the game? Is this fun? If not, does it have the
potential to be fun?
Next steps
How can we scale the game (Mechanical Turk)? Can we support users in designing their own codes? How can we ensure privacy of message sender if we’re crowdsourcing
the encryption?
condoleezzainternational relations in action
Motivation
Many people don’t know what’s going on in the world.
We’re not going to fix this with a game. Many people don’t understand the tradeoffs
in international negotiations. We can teach this concept without the need
to memorize specific facts.
Steps
1. Listen Read updates from surrounding countries
2. Speak Vote on global policy issues
3. Act Make 3 moves each turn: collect resources, job training, donate resources,
war
Scoring
3 measurements of success: Resources relative to world Reputation Human Capital
Actions will increase some measures while decreasing others Example: war will use resources, may boost or lower reputation
Benefits
Learn about tradeoffs Can build strategies by studying past (or
present) civilizations Learn about compromise Challenging but fun puzzle game
Challenges
Pacing Geography (necessary?) Trolling Is this really educational?
Interesting questions
Geography in a digital society Influence of micro-countries How fluid is reputation?
