TREASURER’SREPORT–MikeThompson

2013 was another year of progressive change for the Chamber.

Back in 2011, the board restricted $39,581 of surplus to allow for

restructuring.  The intention was to reinvest past surplus in

renewing and improving the operations and services of the

Chamber.  Through 2012 and again in 2013, organizational

improvements and investments including staff changes lead to

annual expenses in excess of revenues that were covered by those

restricted funds.  Our deficiency of revenue over expenses for 2013

was $12,107 versus $21,866 in 2012.  Our budget for 2013 was a

$4,669 deficiency, but lower than expected memberships and the

rescheduling of the Business Achievement Awards (previously Sterling Awards) into 2014 were the

primary factors in the adverse variance to budget of $7,408.

Our working capital is also down slightly though still very positive with current assets at 1.9 times

current liabilities which is consistent with the prior year.

The Chamber remains in a strong financial position with $507,255 of Net Assets, though down $12,104

from 2012.  We hold capital assets with net book value of $555,033 – primarily our land and building

which thanks to the generosity of you the members is now mortgage free.

We have a strong team in place at the Chamber and new and redefined rolls to ensure our financial

stability, quality membership service and value for your membership dollars.  Our budget for 2014 is to

return to a surplus position so that we can in turn, reinvest those proceeds in continuing to assist in the

success of businesses in Nanaimo.
