Why do we have coolant?

• Heat Removal

• Corrosion protection

• Scale prevention

• Freeze & Boil protection

• Cavitation protection (Pitting)

Daimler TrucksCenter for Education 5

Cavitation / Liner pitting

Daimler TrucksCenter for Education 6

Cavitation – EGR Coolers

Today’s engines, equipped with EGR Coolers, greatly increase our requirements to maintain and verify

the condition of the coolant for maximum engine operation.

Daimler TrucksCenter for Education 7

Cavitation – EGR Coolers

Consider This:• Exhaust Temperature may average 700º F• Coolant Temperature would be at least 195º F• The Differential Temp 500º F

With this extreme in temperature differential, any deficiency of the coolant could easily result in

the failure of the EGR system on today engines.

What HD Coolant Technologies are out there?

• Conventional (Automotive Types)

• Fully Formulated Coolants

• ELC or Organic Acids Coolants

Daimler TrucksCenter for Education 9

• Soluble Oil

• High silicate, automotive type antifreeze

• Chromate SCA

• Methoxy propanol-base coolant

• Methyl alcohol-base coolant

• Sealer additives or coolant containing sealer additives

• HVAC coolants

• Water with total hardness above 170 PPM

Do NOT Use The Following:

Conventional Coolant(Automotive)

Glycol - (47.5%)

Water - (50%)

Additives - (2.5%)Corrosion protection. Phosphate, Nitrates,

Silicates.

Maintaining Conventional Coolant (Automotive)

• Do NOT use in Mid-Range Diesel Engines • Initial fill must be pre-charged with SCA’s• Every 15-20,000 miles (250 Hrs) check freeze point

and SCA depletion using test strips• Add SCA as test strip directs• SCA can be added with liquid, service filter or

extended service filter • Drain, Flush and fill annually

What is Fully Formulated Coolant?• Phosphate free, Very low total dissolved

solids (TDS)• Meets TMC RP 329 and ASTM D6210 specs• Common Brand Names:

• FleetCharge• Alliance• Prestone HD

• Colors: Depending on the manufacturer or OEM spec requirements

• Purple• Pink

• Good for the life of the engine if properly maintained with Penray SCA’s

Daimler TrucksCenter for Education 14

Maintaining Fully Formulated Coolant• Initial fill is already pre-charged with SCA (no additional

SCA are needed)

• Every 15-20,000 miles (250 Hrs) check freeze point and SCA using test strips

• Add SCA as test strip directs

• SCA can be added with liquid, service filter or extended service filter

What is ELC (OAT, NOAT) Coolant?• Primarily market colors:

• RED (Heavy duty)• ORANGE (Light Duty)

• Common Brand Names:• Cat ELC• GM Dexcool• Texaco ELC• Powercool Plus• Final Charge• Shell ELC• Fleetguard ES Optimax

Daimler TrucksCenter for Education 17

Maintaining Organic Acid (OAT, NOAT) Coolant

• Every 15-20,000 miles check freeze point and contamination level with Universal Test strip

• “Extender” may be added at 300,000 miles (6,000 Hrs) if coolant sample tests OK

• At 600,000 miles (12,000 Hrs) drain and flush• Add nothing into the system except ELC or distilled water• If system becomes contaminated with more than 15% of

anything else (poor quality water, SCA, or other coolants) it must be drain and flushed or converted

Refractometer

• Test Freeze point

• Must use with ELC

• Very accurate

Liquid SCA’s Nitrite / Borate technology

Added to coolant @ 5% concentration

(1 pint per 4 gallons) on initial fill

Need-Release®

Extended Life Cooling System Filter

• Used with Fully Formulated Coolants

• Continuous cooling system protection

• Releases SCA into the cooling system as the corrosively of the coolant increases

• Lasts 150,000 miles, 15 months or 3,000 hours

• Replaces 8-10 ordinary filters

• Saves on labor and inventory

Daimler TrucksCenter for Education 23

Need Release Coolant Filter

Separate “Pucks” dissolve as the coolant becomes more acidic, releasing SCA back into the

coolant

Converting ELC to Fully Formulated?

Q: What happens if the bus is ordered with ELC, but I do not want to use ELC?

A: Factory Fill ELC doesn’t force you to continue to use the product. You don’t even have to drain it. Just use conventional coolants for top-up and SCAs as recommended by the manufacturer.

Q: What happens if I am on the road and cannot find my brand of ELC?

A: Most ELC are compatible with most other brands. Using these other products will not diminish the performance of your coolant.
