E as respostas têm sido fabulosas.
Simplesmente fazemos acontecer!

recognized as the leading organization dedicated to
communication and leadership skill development.
Through its worldwide network of clubs, each week

accept it. They find their path to leadership.
[The Corporate Summit, that was held simultaneously in four
European cities, including Lisbon on last March 31st, had very
clear objectives: to promote the Toastmasters concept among
corporations, educating them to the benefits that they may
have for having the initiative to incorporate an internal
Toastmasters club, where employees can train and improve
their communication and leadership skills, according to the
specific needs of each company.
These benefits are evident. At one side, those companies that
have employees more fit and prepared to, in a clear and
appealing way, express their vision, may withdraw dividends,
whether internal, in the discussion of ideas and brainstorming,
or external, in communication with the customers and other
stakeholders. On the other side, by becoming better leaders,
certainly they will contribute to increase the motivational
levels of their teams and increase their performance and
productivity.
The Club Building comprehends different challenges for a
corporate club or an open club. A corporate club is, by nature,
closed, because its membership is restricted to employees of
a company or several companies in the same corporate group.
Also, nothing prevents one company without a business
connection, to share the same corporate club. This will keep
the closed nature, since that club is not open to the
community.
From my experience as a Club Builder, it seems that the main
difference between an open club and a corporate club, is the
tremendous saving of time and labor for the benefit of
developers and officers of the corporate club. Fundamentally,
the need for a wide and constant dissemination of the
Toastmasters concept and the new club is eliminated, and
those activities usually take a significant amount of time,
because it is necessary to be constantly active in different
channels, whether or not they are made in person. The
publication is made within the company, the communication
channels already exist, and tends to be "one shot" at the
beginning, proceeding thereafter to some refreshes for
current employees and, occasionally, to the new admissions.
horários a cumprir!
Se o método Toastmasters for conhecido e
[Another important and always relevant aspect refers to the
location of meetings. Naturally, in corporate clubs, the task of
finding a location for regular meetings is solved at the outset, as
it operates within the company. In an open club, this is always
one of the first challenges that Club Builders face, and which is
not always easy to solve.
In this type of clubs, sessions traditionally take less time than the
ones in open clubs, taking into account that are usually held
during the lunch hour, and that there are schedules to meet!
Therefore, there are not the descriptions that we usually have in
open clubs and, per session, there are only 2-3 speeches and
their evaluation. Table topics may not exist, depending on the
availability of time / type of skills required for the company.
On the other hand, it is known that the greater the enthusiasm
and sponsorship from the management of the company for the
new club, the number of volunteers to join and the degree of
attendance in the sessions will be greater. If the Toastmasters
method is known and recognized for their leadership, more
importance will be given to the club, which will result in greater
compliance by employees. It is therefore desirable that the
leaders themselves may be involved with the club, not only in its
incorporation, but also throughout its life.
This is important because we also know that the lifetime of these
closed clubs is traditionally shorter, since the renewal of the
members is significantly more limited. But this factor is not more
than a greater challenge to maintain dynamism, interest and
cohesion of its members, and the longevity of the club. They will
have to be creative to keep "the flame alive."
_José Manuel Barros
Club Building ProgramCaros Toastmasters,

Club Building ProgramCaros Toastmasters,

[With just one year of existence, the Almada Communication Leaders (ACL) have made efforts to increase their awareness and promote the Toastmasters methodology through partnerships with several entities present in the city of Almada. The area of education has been a strong bet, and the first partnership with BEST Almada, one of several organizations at the Campus of Faculty of Science and Technology, UniversidadeNova de Lisboa (FCTUNL), was signed on February 2014.On April, the Almada Communication Leaders has started a partnership with TEDx FCTUNL, ensuring the participation of a Toastmaster speaker at TEDx editions, the reservation of seats for members of ACL and membership campaigns. On the other hand, the ACL will ensure the preparation of speeches to the participants at TEDx FCTUNL, who wants so, and some workshops directed to students, teachers and finalists of masters and doctorates. On the next June 20th, takes place this year edition of TEDxFCTUNL, and a Toastmaster will make a speech with the theme "be positive".Still in education, and to strengthen the MiniToastmastersbrand, created in Portugal by the ACL, this week began a new MiniToastmasters project, now with the Guadalupe College in Almada, involving 40 students from the 2nd and 3rd year.We believe that these partnerships will bring recognition and notoriety, not only to the Almada Communication Leaders, as well as to the Toastmasters community.

[Some people may think that the expansion that Toastmasters
are feeling these past years is inconsequent, and that it could
continue to have more members and more clubs without any
change in the supporting structure of the organization. This
expansion has consequences and it is beneficial for all of us.
The District 59, which consists of the European countries
except Ireland and the UK (District 71), was created in 2000.
The countries that were included were: Portugal, Spain,
France, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium,
Luxembourg, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Denmark,
Sweden and Norway. Later also Poland and Finland. Since then,
the growth in number of clubs have been between 13 and 17%.
The year in which there were more clubs created was 2011-12,
where 36 clubs were born. This year, 2013-14, has been
fantastic in terms of new clubs. We have already created 44
and more will come. We will beat any previous record in this
area.
On July 1st 2014, we will have two districts instead of one, and
we will have two countries to be incorporated into each of
them, on the same date: Italy and Romania.

MAIO 2014TOASTMASTERS PORTUGAL
Área e outros membros precisam de despender para visitar e dar suporte aos clubes;
nível tomam cada vez mais tempo e esforço a serem preparadas;
múltiplas tarefas a desenvolver.
do Marketing.
problemas. Eu diria que é bom para todos.

[To better understand the "Reformation", it is necessary to
understand the problems the District faces. Here are some:
• Distance: the area covered by the District 59 is huge and
sparse relating to Toastmasters clubs. The financial costs of
travel are, every year, subject of great arguments to convince
the Toastmasters International to accept our budgets. But
more than the financial component, it is the time and effort
that each Area Governor and other members need to spend to
visit and support the clubs;
• Languages: with 18 countries where 12 different
languages are spoken, it is difficult to give the right incentives
to all of them in terms of competitions. With 14 Divisions, the
contests in English already need semi-finals and an extra day
at the District Conference. With two more languages to have
its prominence in the District, it is easily seen that
conferences at this level would take even more time and effort
to be prepared;
• Workload in the Board of Directors team: with over 8,000
members, 64 Areas and 14 Divisions, it is natural that the
issues, problems and points needing discussion and agreement
are many. Between emails and work involved, the functions of
the highest level in the District are increasingly strategic and
requiring more time to make the tracking of multiple tasks to
develop.

WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE
actividade.
[April is the month of motivational contests in Toastmasters.
Therefore, the probability of visiting a club and see its routine
changed with judges, people walking nervously at the door and
an extra dose of photographs is huge.
In speeches delivered during the competitions, there are often
references to great leaders: quotes, inspiring life examples
and big names are the rule.
In Toastmasters this effect is not by chance. If, from one side,
the concept itself is inspiring, on the other, its creator, Ralph
Smedley, a remarkable man of vision, is itself an example of
perseverance and faith in the ideal.
Since the beginning of his career, Ralph Smedley was
connected to the education field. The Toastmasters concept
emerged to meet the need of assigning communication skills to
students at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), Illinois.
Ralph Smedley then created the first public speaking club. This
club, where he practiced public communication, received the
name "toastmaster" (master of toasts) because its activities
involved making short speeches during or after meals.
Students who learned by doing, disputed with each other the
interventions and the right to preside over the organization of
the sessions.
The year was 1903 and this was the embryo of Toastmasters!
In spite of this success, the implementation of the
Toastmasters method had to wait. When Ralph Smedley was
moved to another location, the club, without its founder, ended.
However, Ralph Smedley did not give up on the concept that he
created, and to any place where he was going, he organized a
Toastmasters club. In Freeport, the concept was extended to
outside the university sphere. The clubs now included
professionals who recognized the importance of
communication skills. Unfortunately, like the Illinois club, when
Smedley was transferred, the clubs shut down their activity.

"I observed a tendency among my fellow secretaries at the YMCA to regard The
Toastmasters Club as a sort of peculiarity, an idiosyncrasy of mine."
fundaram outros clubes Toastmasters.
Obrigada Ralph Smedley!

When in 1924 he was transferred again, this time to Santa Ana,
California, Smedley, as always, has founded a new
Toastmasters club. Perhaps for the optimistic environment or
the sunny climate, this time the concept was rooted in the
community. Quickly, people from nearby towns showed interest

Since then, the concept has not stopped growing, extending to
other countries first, and then spreading across continents.
The privilege that we, all Toastmasters members, enjoy today
came from the vision of a man who has always believed in the
ideal. Ralph Smedley always believed to be possible to improve
our individual performance and, despite setbacks, never gave
up helping others to become better communicators and
leaders.
Today, we should all be inspired by the example of a man who
only wanted to help their students.
We must all be grateful for this dream come true, that still
makes us evolve.

A formação dos Toastmasters

Henriques, Leonor Evangelista, Catarina Alves, Rafael Peeralty e Beatriz Barros. Esperamos
["Toastmasters are like a snowball, it only costs to start, João de Mendonça said in his welcome message.
uma palestra intitulada “Hard is not enough!”.
Hugo Silva.

o dia:
• Concurso de Discursos de Avaliação em português;
• Concurso de Discursos Motivacionais em português;
partilhar.

Paulo Martins (Area L1), was the first to take the stage with the "Happy Ending" speech. MAIO 2014TOASTMASTERS PORTUGAL

partilhar.
[The competition: the reason we are here. As already mentioned, we were fortunate to be able to attend 4 contests, that took place during the day: • Evaluation Contest in Portuguese; • Motivational Speeches Contest in Portuguese; • Evaluation Contest in English; • Motivational Speeches Contest in English. After the speeches of Mini-toastmasters, we heard the target speech in Portuguese, to be evaluated by the contestants, entitled "Impact of a Butterfly“, by Filipe Pereira. Contestants in this category were the following, in this order: Carlos Costa (Area L4), Francisco Esteves (Area L2), Carla Martins (Area L3) and Carla Marques (Area L1). The result is already known: Francisco Esteves came first, followed by Carla Martins. Evaluations had impact and inspired us to follow the example of those people, with high leadership skills. After a coffee break, which was received with joy and conviviality, the Motivational Speeches Contest in Portuguese took place. Paulo Martins (Area L1), was the first to take the stage with the "Happy Ending" speech. Like any good football fan, Paulo likes to remember that mythical year that Ricardo (Portuguese goal keeper) made history, reminding us that we must risk going out of our comfort zone, going on the learning zone. The second one stepping on stage was Ivan Garcia (Area L2), with his animated speech entitled "World Without Mirrors“, an analogy that encourages us to challenge ourselves every day.Next, Nuno Helder Silva (Area L3), had the opportunity to present himself to the audience for the first of three times during the day, with his speech "Great Party", leaving as a message that life is one big party and we must seize it and have fun.Selma Cazes (Area L5), presented us an enriching speech, “I Love to Share”, which gives us the lesson that life is more fun with your partner, and that we must learn to accept and share.

[The last speech, which was also the winner, "Smiling to Life," was given by Luis Marrana (Area L4). All speeches were of high quality and we went out for lunch with more enthusiasm and a smile on our lips, because laugh gives us more years of life! After lunch, and after the intervention of Gustavo Santos, James Sørlie presented the target speech in English, to be evaluated by the contestants. The contestants for this category were: Nuno Helder Silva (Area L3), Filipe Romano (Area L4), Ana Cristina Pessoa (Area L1) and Luis Caixado (Area L2). The winner, as already mentioned, was Ana Cristina Pessoa, with an insightful analysis and excellent indications for improvement.
um discurso arrepiante e comovente, intitulado “Strip Tease for the Senses”.
Seguiu-se o discurso intitulado “I can see”, da autoria de Raquel Belo (Área L2), deixando-
estaremos todos a torcer pelas nossas duas concorrentes.
[Finally, after a musical moment, that left us completely

awarded with the first place, and hopefully also will touch the

The following speech was entitled "I can see", presented by
Raquel Belo (Area L2), leaving us as the important message
that life is about to seek feeling with the heart, rather than
limit ourselves to see with the eyes.
Nuno Helder Silva (Area L3), stepped onto the stage for the
third time and, interestingly, to present the third speech, "The
Value of Life," which had as its conclusion that if we can not
things change around us, then we must change ourselves.
At last, Ana Cristina Pessoa (Area L1), comes back to speak
with "Make a Wish", encouraging us to find our dream, believe
in it and finally make it come true, because we are the sum of
everything we do.
The afternoon was breathtaking, with these four speeches of
excellence and, in two weeks, we'll all be supporting our two
contestants.
After a full day, we came to the most awaited moment: the
awards. The champions were applauded by an audience
satisfied with everything they witnessed. Jaap Russchenberg
returned to the stage to give awards to people of excellence,
that lead Toastmasters forward, engaged in the organization,
and that deserve all the recognition that can be given to them.

[Before ending the conference, Soraia Ramos made us a summary of the day, using a fun satire, which put the audience out laughing and was worthy of winning the next Humorous Contest. The joy that was felt in the air was contagious and led us to continue in a festive atmosphere in Oeiras Terrace, the bar of Hugo Silva and Lucia Encarnação, overlooking the sea. Finally, Marco Meireles, Division L Governor, closed the conference by leaving a note worth notice: over 30% of the audience did not belong to Toastmasters, which shows the value of what we have to offer to the world. We need to give voice to our value, because in this event we inspired Portugal and we will wake up the world!

Majestic, in the high of the mountain, at 1200 meters of

Opening on April 1st, Pousada da Serra da Estrela has 92
rooms (including two with spa concept), spa, indoor and
outdoor pool, meeting rooms and restaurant. Everything has
been studied to the smallest detail, so that the new project
preserved the original architecture of the building, built in the
early twentieth century. Conceived by the famous architect
Cottinelli Telmo, in the 20’s, the building keeps endless
memories, like the big carnival dances, that people still miss.
To José Castelão Costa, president of Pousadas de Portugal,
"this is another project that makes us very proud. Not only
because it has the signature of one of the greatest Portuguese

national heritage, undertaken by the Pestana Group for over a

WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE
No momento vamos USUFRUIR!
[The organization of a competition is always a learning moment and an opportunity for growth. It fell to the newly formed Torres Vedras club to embrace the challenge of organizing the Area L1 Spring Contest and for this reason, we decided to talk with the President, Armando Fernandes and with the Sargeantat Arms, João Damil, about this experience:How was the experience of organizing the Area Contest in Torres? AF and JD – It was an opportunity to publicize our city, its history and the present, and its life quality. We took the support of the Municipality in the visit to the Museum and the offer of the typical bean pastry, of Soerad's Hospital, with the offer of its the excellent Auditorium, the “Novo Dia“ coffee, the wines of “Adega Mãe" and “Quinta da Folgorosa“, and "Design" by Ana Mafalda Fernandes, to receive the L1 community in Torres. It was also our opportunity to receive a very enriching experience from people and from the discovery of work methods that are used or are corrected, in order to achieve excellence. It was important to have the contest in Torres, to consolidate and engage the members of the club?AF and JD – Yes. First we found that, although few, we have a small tuned orchestra, because we can have boldness, attitude and endeavor to hold the contest. Finally, it allowed us to know each other better, share experiences and show that, although we met recently, we could join before a challenge, and it seems that we have reached the goal. What were the biggest lessons learned in the process?AF - We are all still learners! We are a prospect club and noticed some doubts from the jury about the tasks that were entrusted to us. In the end, Joaquim Pinto as Timekeaper, Artur Silva as Counter in Contest, and João Damil as Sergeant at Arms, received the praise that they behaved like an experienced Toastmaster. Ana Mafalda Fernandes was applauded by the quality of the posters and support, and I received compliments for the organization, on the same day, from the people present, and in the following days, from Marco Meireles, Division Governor, and from Joao de Mendonca, District Governor. We learned and we got the confidence to build an excellent group. JD – Besides uncovering our skills to organize an event of this nature, we have found that we can achieve an excellent level of communication and leadership through Toastmasters. What suggestions would you have for those who proposes to hold an Area Contest in the future?AF - Knowing what we want to do and the goals we propose ourselfes to achieve! Then it's Plan, Organize, Delegate and WORK! At the moment we will ENJOY! At the end is all about measure and draw new CHALLENGES! JD - Apply all that you liked in the Torres Vedras event and other, but above all, remember what was less good, so it doesn’t repeat, and excellence will be at an even higher level.

May 6th 2006 marked the beginning of Toastmasters in Portugal. The concept was brought by the founders of Lisbon Toastmasters Club (http://issuu.com/toastmastersportugal/docs/toastmastersportugal_4), and thus, on May 6th, the Lisbon Toastmasters Club celebrated its anniversary, and also the 8 years of the existence of Toastmasters in Portugal. We counted with the presence of some senior Toastmasters from other clubs, including Sara Magalhães (President of OTC), João Antunes (Lisbon MBA Founder), Luís Caetano (President of Advanced Runners) and João de Mendonça (District 59 Governor). We finished the session with cake, gifts and much conviviality.

MAIO 2014TOASTMASTERS PORTUGAL

[This was, without no doubt, a high moment in the club’s life, and a strong booster for the motivation of each of its members, as can be seen in the following testimony:Ana Mafalda Fernandes, Vice President for Public Relations -"It was important to held the Area Contest in Torres Vedras, it gave us an excellent opportunity to showcase our city and, at the same time, knowing more experienced Toastmasters.“.Joaquim Pinto, Secretary - "With dedication and commitment everything is possible ...".Artur Lucas Silva, Vice President for Education - "It was a quality experience that helped to add individual value and, more specifically, will and identity of Toastmasters in general, and of Torres MT in concrete.“The moral of this story could not be clearer: the organization of a competition is an opportunity not to be missed!

WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE MAIO 2014TOASTMASTERS PORTUGAL
as mudanças positivas e o crescimento.
Onde te vês daqui a 3 anos?
Adoro o

Even if I did not win the 1st prize, I would be a winner, for having overtaken myself), and nervous (before the announcement of the 1st prize).Where do you see yourself three years from now? And what influences the Toastmasters will have in your career? One thing is certain, 3 years from now I will be Division Governor or I will be doing my application for this to happen. That's my goal of leadership in TM, and also be a DTM. Regardless of where I go to work, here or abroad, I see myself in a TM club. I love the environment, the people and the friendships created during this year, and I look forward to create even more.
As for upcoming events, Pestana Sintra Toastmasters Club is organizing a very special demo session at FNAC CascaisShopping, on May 16th, with the theme "Growth". The session begins at 6.45pm (welcome), and opens at 7pm, so you are all invited!
Ivan Garcia, representante do Barreiro Toastmasters Club, sempre original e dinâmico,

aware of the TM concept (thought it was a lecture), but the
first 2 sessions (one as a guest and another as a founding

WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE
equipa e novo líder do CTC.
do ISCAC.
[The Coimbra Toastmasters Club (CTC) completed, on April, three years of existence. Pedro Paiva is currently leading the CTC and outlines key strategies for promoting the club, and its projects:The CTC has completed three years of existence. How do you evaluate the work of the Club in the period in which you are president? At the end of 2013, we have an interesting group of people with interesting communication skills and will to continue to develop themselves and their mates. This has given quality at the club and, curiously, or perhaps not, that quality and experience makes arise relationships and new elements, that feel like family. Let's continue with the projects "out of home", briefly with professionals from IPO, and soon will also happen a new session at FNAC. On July 2014, I’m leaving my function, and I go with the awareness that the objectives outlined in the beginning of the mandate are almost completed. We have a group of people (from last year and new ones) with the capacity, willingness and availability to continue the job of magnifying this club, which benefits everyone.During this time you are ahead of the CTC, which moment or moments do you think have been more positive and more outstanding?Since the most intimate sessions, such as the Co-work and FNAC, to overarching sessions, as the demo sessions in ISCAC with 80 people, ESEC with 130 people or, the more recent, in FEUC, are highlights. Also the organization of the seminar in Figueira da Foz "Towards the Future", with the presence of relevant people in our society, and the organization of TLI -Toastmasters Leadership Institute, were defining moments. Not only because they spread the concept to the city, as they have the power to attract new members. It is my belief that these events are those that approach the club to the city, and bring new members to the club. If we stay closed in our space, the results will always the same. And the diversity of speakers and evaluators is important to the quality of the club. What are the next steps and/or challenges to CTC?We are at the end of a term that ran in a very positive way. There will be new team and new leader of the CTC. He will be the best person to say what will be the new challenges. As a member, I would like to see the quality of the club continue to be consolidated, and the number of members allowing to create two new clubs, operating with the support of the CTC, which passes by the autonomy of the Figueira da FozToastmasters Club, and by the Club at ISCAC. When it happens, will be a milestone in the history of Coimbra Toastmasters. There are very dedicated people and I believe that with the work that these people have done, sooner or later, these two new clubs will be real.

Notícias da L3Coimbra Toastmasters completa 3 anos de vida!
MAIO 2014TOASTMASTERS PORTUGAL
Eu vejo as empresas
competências no CTC.
[The CTC has invested a lot in disclosing actions and demo sessions. Is this the way to boost the visibility of the Club and the Toastmasters concept? That is my conviction. We have to go to the people, to the places where they are, and show that this project has a tremendous potential to help any member to communicate better and more effectively. People usually like it. But not being a traditional education, with well-defined beginning and end, it may be more difficult to decide that this is the way, because who enters into a Toastmasters club, can remain there during his life. In the oldest clubs, there are some members with numerous years of Toastmasters, and they are fundamental in the passage of knowledge and values to new members. This is a matter of pure marketing. I see sustainable companies with good performances, giving value to their clients, and communicate with them permanently. We have our customers well defined. If we want them with us, we have to go after them, treat them well, show how we can help them and show, when they came as members, that actions support the words spoken. I think this is one of the factors that has provided the consolidation of knowledge practices and skills in the CTC.
In this edition, we also wanted to have the testimony of a member of the latest club of the Area, the Viseu Toastmasters Club. José Sargento tells us about his experience: "I arrived on a Tuesday night at the Inn. Actually, went only to "see the show“. I took some expectation on the luggage (much thanks to the enthusiasm with which António Albuquerque always spoke me about the Toastmasters, and, I must admit, some prejudice. What I had been able to see on the internet, activated on me the prejudice of a slightly technocratic approach, with, perhaps, too tight rules, much in the American way, that, in spite of having numerous advantages, still has, in some circumstances, the risk of privileging form rather than content. So are prejudices. Once or twice are useful. Most times they are stupid, because, more than leverage the thought, they condition its free course. On that Tuesday night, once again, I realized that, fortunately, often the concepts contradict the prejudices. I found people with remarkable speaking skills and, perhaps most important, I did not found a cluster of people united by a system of rules, kind of mechanical. I found a group in the truest sense of the word. A group that knows how to use the rules to their advantage to evolve in the arts of communicate and lead, but who is not imprisoned by them. Is there are a more reliably way to attest communication and leadership skills than the transformation of a cluster of people in a real group?

Ana Monteiro e a Selma Cazes (representantes do Algarve TM) e o Rui Gorjão
(representante do Beja TM).
