Hulle het langs die spoorlyn af-geloop en wou dit oorsteek. Dietrein het hulle toe getref. Van Nie-kerk waarsku dat dit ’n oortredingis om oor spoorlyne te loop.

In ’n poging om dié onwettige ak-tiwiteit deur mense te verhoed, hetJacob Jacobs, wyksraadslid, Trans-net drie jaar gelede genader om tehelp met ’n blywende oplossing.“Vantevore was daar draad, wat niegewerk het nie,” het hy gesê.

for drug possession, 23 for assault with theintent to cause grievous bodily harm, 21 forcommon assault, 20 for theft, 16 for drunkdriving, 11 for outstanding warrants of ar-rest, 11 for possession of presumed stolengoods, one for murder, three for attemptedmurder and one for armed robbery.Muavha said the other remaining suspects

were arrested for other crimes ranging fromcommon robbery, possession of a stolen mo-

tor vehicle, prostitution, shoplifting, inter-dict, crimen injuria, contravening of a courtorder, dealing in liquor, theft out of openshop, sexual assault, house robbery, posses-sion of illegal firearm, kidnapping, intimida-tion, possession of illegal ammunition, deal-ing in drugs, and reckless andnegligent driv-ing.Items confiscated by police include 321 tik

sachets, 82 dagga stoppe, 21mandrax tablets,one Toyota vintage vehicle, one geyser, twofirearms and ammunition, eight cellphones,1TopTVdecoder and remote control, 369 bot-tles of 210ml alcohol, binoculars, two car bat-teries and one Toyota Corolla vehicle.“Kuils River Cluster commander, Briga-

dier Vincent Beaton would like to take thisopportunity and express his gratitude to allthe police in his cluster including the differ-ent police units that are working tirelesslyand even going the extra mile in fighting thecrime,” said Muavha.The public is asked to report any criminal

Drug crimes top the list

The organisations qualifying for the City ofCape Town’s grant-in-aids under Subcouncil21 wasmade public at lastmonth’s sub-coun-cil meeting.Thegrant-in-aids are for the 2012/2013year

and stem from the subcouncil’s ward alloca-tion operational budget for Grant-in-Aid.In Ward 11, the R20 000 was ploughed into

youth and sport development, with the KuilsRiver Youth Development Forum beingawarded R10 000 and the Fujian Goju RyuKarate club receiving the other R10 000.In Ward 14, the allocation of R20 000 was

also equally split between community organ-isations, Better Life Organisation, and NewBirth Community Outreach Centre.The grant-in-aid for Ward 17 was attribut-

ed to the upliftment and support of the BlueDowns Spurs Development Academy.

In the area of Wesbank, four different or-ganisations got a slice of the grant-in-aid pie.The aid money was split between the King-domKids Educare (R11 000), Community La-dies for All (R2 000), Women of Power(R2 000) and the remaining R15 000 for theKuils River Technical High School.During the subcouncil meeting, Steven

Vuba, Subcouncil 21 chairperson said therole for subcouncil is to facilitate conducivecommunities and to identify themost impor-tant small gaps to be filled. Vuba especiallyspoke to local ward councillors about therole they play as the facilitators of the im-provement of conditions in the communi-ties.“As ward councillors we are also social

workers.We need to identify those areas, it’sa process, which we are starting.” Vuba wel-comed input as to how the council can aidcommunity upliftment.

Hannerie Pienaar en Marisa Beukes, tweestudente in opvoedkundige sielkunde by dieUniversiteit Stellenbosch, doen tans hulprakties by dié laerskool in Melton Rose enmoes ’n gemeenskapsprojek skep waarbydie leerlinge van die skool baat kon vind.

Dié twee het koppe bymekaar gesit en be-sluit om iets aan te pak wat tot die groenig-heid van die skoolterrein sal bydra. “Onswou graag strukturele verandering aan-bring en ook aan die kinders koeltebome ver-

skaf,” het Hannerie gesê. Met die borskappevan Leitch Landscaping, Just Trees, Nam-kwa Horticulture en die hulp van die SouthAfrican Landscapers Institute (SALI), watdie plant van die bome en aanlê van be-sproeiingstelsel hanteer het. Tuinbankies isook gekry.

Die aanvanklike planne was ook om dierugbyveld op te gradeer met die plant vangras, maar weens die hoë koste daarvan wasdit nie moontlik nie.

Leerlinge is verlede Woensdag deelge-maak van die boomplantverrigtinge, wat ’npraatjie oor die onderhoud van die bome in-gesluit het. “Hierdie is julle boom wat jullemooi na moet kyk dat die kinders dit nie be-skadig nie,” het Hannerie aan die leerlingegesê. Die idee met die bome is ook om eie-naarskap onder kinders te bevorder sodathulle die bome as hul eie sal sien.

Learners of the school based in Eerste Riv-er, teamed up with members of Greenpop,tree-planting organisation, Smith TabataBuchanan Boyes (STBB), African Son Prop-erties, the school’s governing body andschool management in a tree-planting initia-tive last week.

Leonard Botha, from African Son Proper-ties reached out to STBB, who in turnreached out to Greenpop to give rise to thissplendid programme for Arbour Day.

Sean Spender from Greenpop, who co-or-dinated the tree-planting session, presentedan educational session to learners before the

actual tree-planting. “I talked to them abouthow important trees are, what they can dofor us and why we should plant more trees.”

gepas wees nie – die Liqui-fruit-amfiteaterin die Paarl, geleë reg langs die AfrikaanseTaalmonument.Laurika, wat in die Kaap gebore is maar

al dekades in Gauteng bly, sê sy sien gewel-dig uit na die produksie “onder die sterreen die maan” (dit gaan twee dae voor vol-maan wees).Sy vertel sy het aanvanklik, toe die idee

aanhaar voorgelê is, nie die omvang van dieproduksie besef nie. “Noudat dit begin lewekry en ek sien hoe al die elemente byme-kaarkom, sien ek geweldig uit daarna: Jani-ne Neethling, wat die program saamstel enmusiekregisseur van die produksie is; dievier A-lys-musikante en die wonderliketwee sangers, Brandon October en Jak dePriester, wat saammetmy sing en speel; Le-on vanNierop se pragtige teks – hy gaan selfook optree as aanbieder vir die aand. “Dis’n voorreg om deel te wees van so iets,” sêsy. How would you experience blind-ness if given a slight glimpse into theworld of the visually disabled?This is exactly what the non-profit

organisation Blind SA, aims to dowith their annual Dinner in theDark, campaign, and the insightsgained by diners is startling. Thisyear’s event, hosted by the Cape Pe-ninsula branch, took place at theProtea Hotel on Saturday evening.Arriving in a dining room where

the lights were dimmed down to re-semble a late twilight, I at first feltcomfortable in the low light.As long as I have the flashlight on

my cellphone nearby, in case I hadto make a note or two. But where ismy cellphone?I opened my bag and started fid-

dling around for my phone in vain.A few seconds later I found myselfgripped in fear.Finally giving up, I stormed out of

the shadowy room and headedstraight for the bathroom, where Isuccessfully retrieved my elusive

phone under the clinical brightlights.The realisation hitsme like a train

in the night: “What would I do, if thelights are never switched on again?This is the unfortunate reality for

nearly half a million people in SouthAfrica currently and the numbersare growing.Blind SA is an organisation of

blind people for blind people, andaims to do whatever is necessary toimprove the quality of life of blindSouth Africans, to enable them toplay an active role in the socio-eco-nomic life of the country.“With this event we not only raise

funds to help our fellow blind, but al-so to create awareness. We want so-ciety to realise that we as blind peo-ple havemany capabilities,” saidVe-ronica Vosloo, a fundraiser at BlindSA, who lives in Kraaifontein.According to André Vosloo, chair-

man of the Peninsula branch, muchdisinformation still exists aboutblind people.“A few decades ago blind people

were employed only as switchboardoperators, whereas today they workin many fields from physiotherapyto the business,” he said.Blind SA was established by blind

persons in 1946, during a time whenblind people in South Africa had noopportunities and was forced to ad-vocate for themselves.

“Back then blind people had nojobs. Theyworked inworkshops andinstead of receiving a salary theywere compensated in meals. Societyneeds to know that we as blind peo-ple can be an asset to the communi-ty,” he said, an argument that wasproved aptly when a group of blindwaitrons entered the dining room toserve the seeing diners, who thenhad to place blindfolds over theireyes.The waitrons received a brief lay-

out of the room, ten minutes priorand dinnerwas servedwithout a sin-gle glitch.The same cannot be said for the

diners however. Finding the food onyour plate and then directing yourfork in the right direction, in itselfis rather challenging, providing thatthe food stays on the fork.And you’re nothing but lucky

should you find your wine glassagain for a swig of encouragement.Apart fromtheobvious, thedinner

conversation was strikingly differ-ent than usual. It was as if everyoneat the table was suddenly switchedon by a giant hand, genuinely listen-ing to the others.With half my dinner next to my

plate, anda table full of knockedoverwine glasses, the significance of themessage is crystal clear: blindpeopleare more than capable of living ameaningful life.

In die B-afdeling het Bellville met sy oor-winning van 35-28 oor Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege ’n voet in die deur gekryvir moontlike bevordering na die A-afde-ling.

Goodwood het goed stem dikgemaak deurPniël Villagers met 46-22 te kou, terwylKuilsrivier se wedstryd teen Collegians opopwindende wyse met 39-39 gelykop geëin-dig het. Brackenfell (24-57 t Helderberg) enHands & Heart (22-23 t Primrose) het in diestof gebyt.

Die komende naweek se program (tuis-span eerste) is: Belhar t Schotsche Kloof/Walmer, Tygerberg t Universiteit Kaapstad,Goodwood t Noordelikes/Northlink-kolle-ge, Bellville t Helderberg, Collegians tHands & Heart.

Uitdagings virDurbies, T’berg

Belhar Cricket Club, whose first team playsits cricket in the 2A Division of the WPCA, isbased at Symphony Park in Belhar and is ona drive to attract new members.

The club has a junior component of about50 boys who compete for places in the threeage group teams of u-11, u-13 and u-15.

These teams have performed very well inthe first half of the season earlier this year andhave beaten top teams such as WPCC and StAugustine’s in the competition.

Junior practises take place on Tuesdays andThursdays from 16:00 to 18:00 and will com-mence towards the beginning of October.

The u-15 team will be competing in theTownship T20 tournament scheduled for 1 to3 October.

Another exciting highlight will be when theu-11s will, once again, be involved in a matchagainst Primrose Hill from London, England,on Saturday 16 February 2013. The team fromPrimrose Hill have played against the u-11team on two previous occasions and enjoyedthe match so much that they have extendedan invitation to the club to once again playagainst them next year.

With such a lot of juniors members the clubwould also like to appeal to those interestedin assisting with the managing of these young-sters on a Saturday.

The club also has two senior teams that com-pete in the 2A, and Reserve E Divisions of theWPCA respectively. The first team is quite avibrant, young and positive team and theylook forward to realising their potential andplay great cricket to bring glory to Belhar.

Senior practises take place on Tuesdays andThursdays from 18:00 to 20:00. Pre-seasontraining, under the watchful eye of seniorcoach, Mario Hugo, is in full swing and thoseeager to show their mettle are welcome to joinin.
