Why did the Europeans start to look for water trade routes to the Indies

(eastern Asia)?

1.) Collapse of the Mongol Empire

made the Silk Road unsafe and more

expensive.

Individual areas would charge

traders to pass through “safely”.

2.) Ottoman Empire (Muslims)

took control of Byzantine Empire

and became the “Middle Man”

between China and Europe trade.

This made trading on the Silk Road

even more expensive.

3.) Other European countries were tired of Italy making so

much money off the Silk Road and they wanted to get direct

access.

Why did the Europeans look for an

alternative route to the Asia?

Portugal and Spain were the first to explore the world.

Soon disagreement arose between the two countries.

Line of Demarcation- Pope divided the world between Spain & Portugal

- This gave Spain an advantage in the Americas and was able to control more land there.
