Basilian Monasticism 2017 marks the 400th Anniversary of the creation
of the Order of St. Basil the Great. The Ruthenian
(Ukrainian-Byelorussian) Church reaffirmed its reunion
with the Catholic Church in the Union of Brest in 1596.
The monasteries living according to the Rule of St. Basil
the Great and St. Theodore Studite were independent and
had fallen into a state of decline. St. Josaphat Kuntsevich
and Joseph Veniamin Rutsky began the reform of monastic
life in the Holy Trinity Monastery in Vilnius. In 1617 the
individual monasteries united into a single order, the Order
of St. Basil the Great. The Basilian Order strengthened the
Union among the Belarussians and Ukrainians and
helped preserve their religious and national culture from
Polonization, Protestantism and later Russification. The
Basilian Order serves Byzantine Catholics in Central and
Eastern European countries such as Hungary, Romania,
Slovakia, and Ukraine, and North and South (Cont. on pg. 3)

An Election Prayer to Mary
O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this most critical time, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care. Most Holy Mother, we beg you to reclaim this land for the glory of your Son. Overwhelmed with the burden of the sins of our nation, we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuge in your motherly protection. Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Open our minds to the great worth of human life and to the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Free us from the falsehoods that lead to the evil of abortion and threaten the sanctity of family life. Grant our country the wisdom to proclaim that God’s law is the foundation on which this nation was founded, and that He alone is the True Source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. O Merciful Mother, give us the courage to reject the culture of death and the strength to build a new Culture of Life.

Monastic life is the result of the Christian Spirit based
on the Evangelical Counsels which were handed down to us
from Jesus Christ Himself. The word 'monk' is derived from
the Greek 'monos' meaning 'single, solitary'. St. Basil the
Great (329-379) organized them into communities living as
the early Christians lived; "All who believed were together
and held all things in common…continuing daily with one
accord in the temple…praising God and being in favor
with all the people," and they "were of one heart and one
soul, and not one of them said that anything he possessed
was his own but they had all things in common." (Acts 2;
44-7, 4; 32) From this text, St. Basil drew his 3 main
principles of religious life which prevail in the Basilian
Order to this day.
First Principle - In order to live a full Christian life and
practice virtues, men should live in a community, forming
one happy, spiritual family. "The common of brethren is
an arena for spiritual combat, a good path of progress, a
continuous practice and exercise of the Lord's
Commandments. This kind of life has the glory of God as
its only aim." Recommending brotherly love as the
characteristic virtue of his community, St Basil quotes
Psalm 132; 1: "Behold how good and how pleasant it is
where brethren dwell together…For there the Lord has
pronounced His blessings and life forever."
Second Principle - To secure order and harmony in his
community, St. Basil formulated a set of rules which he
later arranged into 55 Long Rules and 313 Short Rules.
The Rules advocate moderation in spiritual exercises and
mortification, realizing that "at the tribunal of Christ the
words of Holy Scripture will comfort us." St. Basil based
his Rule on the Bible to be everlasting and timeless as the
Word of God. These Rules have made St. Basil one of the
greatest teachers of spirituality of all times. They were
translated into Latin by Rufinus and in the 6th century were
applied by St. Benedict to Western monasticism. Thus, St.
Basil became the ideologist of religious life in common.
Third Principle - St. Basil's 3rd principle was the
active life for monks to serve the needs of the Church and
the people. Only then could his followers fulfill the basic
laws of charity (Long Rule 3). Although a monk should
live in solitude, "removed from the cares of this
world" (Long Rules 5; 6: Ephesians 2), nevertheless, "as a
soldier of Christ" he should always be on call to conquer
the world for Christ (1st Ascetical Discourse). St. Basil's
conception of a life of solitude is the preparation or the
reconditioning of a monk for dedicated active life. Every
Basilian must be to practice Christian charity with deeds: he
must be ready for all apostolic and pastoral work: he must
dedicate himself to the education and the guidance of youth.
Such was St. Basil's idea of charity in action (Long Rules 3,
42). In his preface to the Long Rules, St. Basil assures us if
these Rules are understood and practiced, they will develop
each monk into "perfect manhood, to the mature measure of
the fullness of Christ." (Ephesians 4; 13)
