1

GeneralAn ADR adapted vehicle must be able totransport dangerous goods in such a waythat it does not cause and cannot aggravatea possible accident situation.

The ADR legal requirements differ betweencountries but all are based on the ADR ac-cord. Follow the regulations of the relevantcountry.

In ADR certified trucks the main circuitbreaker cuts the current to all systems inthe truck except for the tachograph.

Caution! Switch off the parking heaterbefore cutting the current. The parkingheater may be damaged if left on when thecurrent is cut.

Note! Do not by-pass the main circuit-breaker. If the main circuit-breaker isby-passed the vehicle no longer fulfills thestatutory requirements and safety demands.

KOMP-FM-GBR 1:141

2

Switch off the current• Press in the switch on the dashboard

or

• Press the switch on the rear of the cab(optional extra)

When the ignition key is removed from thestarter switch the current is initially cut af-ter twenty minutes. If the parking lamps, parking heater or hazard warning lamps areon or if the air suspension is active (thecontrol button not in the run position) thecurrent will not be cut at all.

When the main current is cut all the sys-tems on the vehicle are shut off, except forthe tachograph.

Warning! Do not cut the current dur-ing a journey! When the current is cutthe engine and important systems areswitched off.

System overview

The new tachograph 1324 sets new stand-ards in performance, technology, and design due to its modular design with separate dis-play and recording. The tachograph 1324, which is in DIN radio compartment format, is an innovative system component.

Driver 1 and driver 2 conveniently select the respective working time groups via the con-trol keys.

Besides the date, time and distance travelled, the selected working time groups and the symbols of the inserted charts are clearly shown in the display. Failures at the device or of a system component will be signalled automatically.

Like before, the vehicle speed and the dis-tance travelled as well as the driver specific driving, working and break times are record-ed on the tachograph chart.

Within the immediate field of view of the driver, there is an approved indicating instrument with analogous vehicle speed pointer, digital distance counter, time and trip odometer. The function monitor refers to messages of the tachograph 1324.

Together with the intelligent sensor 2170, the system forms a reliable unit. The sensor provides real-time pulses and encoded data for recording the distance travelled and the vehicle speed.

May all your journeys be pleasant!

General information

The symbols in these operating instructions have the following meanings:

❒ Notes for the operation of the tachograph 1324

• Only open the drawer for inserting or removing the charts. Otherwise, keep it shut at all times to avoid damages and to prevent it from being contaminated.

• Do not use the drawer as a kind of sup-port, like for example, for writing on the charts.

• Do not use any abrasive detergents for cleaning the device, nor any solvents like diluent or naphtha.

• The tachograph 1324 will be installed and sealed by authorised persons. Please do not intervene at the device or at the supply lines.

❒ Notes for the handling of the charts

• The chart is driver-specific and may thus not be transferred to other persons!

• Use charts provided by the manufacturer. Make sure that the full-scale value and the approval mark correspond to those on the tachograph 1324, ➥ see page 16.

• Only insert perfect charts, they may neither be folded, nor be torn at the perimeter and / or at the opening, nor be wavy or damaged in any other way!

• The recorded charts must be safely stored and protected against damage, see also Section 15 of the CR (EEC) No. 3821/85.

Introduction 1

Geartronic, generalGeartronic is an automatic shifting systemmounted on the VT2014B/VT2514B. Thegearbox has 14 forward gears and 4 reversegears. The Geartronic changes gears auto-matically, but the driver can also choose tochange gear manually, either in low andhigh range. The clutch is controlled auto-matically and consequently there is noclutch pedal.

KOMP-FM-GBR 1:405

6 Starting and stopping

Starting instructionsThe gear lever should be inneutral posi-tion or the engine will not start.

When the air pressure to the gearbox is toolow, a warning will be displayed automati-cally. An icon will appear on the display atthe same time as the information lampcomes on. Wait until the lamp has gone outbefore driving off.

T3014366

T3008849

Stopping the vehicle• Apply the parking brake.

• Move the gear lever to neutral (thegear lever must be in neutral in orderto start the engine).

• Stop the engine.

Note! The parking brake must always beapplied when the vehicle is parked or if thedriver leaves the driver’s seat for any otherreason.

1:406

Driving 7

Automatic shiftingThe simplest way of driving the vehicle un-der normal conditions is to use automatic(position ”A”). Gear changing takes placeautomatically and the driver can concen-trate on the actual driving.

When changing gear, the system will con-trol the clutch, gearbox shifting and engineacceleration. The system selects the gearand the time for the gear change foroptimum driving performance based on ac-celerator pedal position, vehicle weight, road inclination, vehicle acceleration, etc.

It is possible to select a couple of gears upor down manually even in automatic mode. The arrows in the display specify howmany steps it is possible to change up ordown. Use the switch on the side of thelever to change gear.

Note! When changing a gear, the accelera-tor pedal shouldnot be released.

T4011551

KOMP-FM-GBR 1:407

8 Driving

Gear holdThis function is used in automatic modeonly.

The hold function can be used in all for-ward gears (1L to 6H).

The hold function marked with an ”H” islocated on the gear lever behind position”A”. When the lever is moved to ”A”, thehold function ”H” is locked to prevent itfrom being engaged unintentionally. Whengear changes are not desired (e.g. whendriving uphill), the lever is moved from”A” to the spring-back position ”H”. Nofurther gear change will take place and thecurrent gear will ”remain” engaged. Thedisplay shows an ”H”.

To return to automatic mode, move thelever once more towards ”H”. If the enginespeed drops towards idling, the hold func-tion will be disengaged automatically and alower gear will be engaged. The systemwill then return to the programme (E/P)that was active before the hold functionwas activated.

Note! There is a risk of over-speedingwhen the hold function is used.

T4014981

1:408

Driving 9

Driving programmeThere are three different driving pro-grammes:

• economy• power• braking

EconomyThe is always active when starting the mo-tor (showed with an E in the display). Theeconomy programme gives priority to fueleconomy and is used when driving undernormal conditions.

PowerThe power programme is activated and de-activated using the E/P button (see picture). The power programme is used when driv-ing in hilly terrain requiring up and downgear changes at higher engine speeds thanis normal with the economy programme.

BrakesThe braking programme is engaged withthe auxiliary brake lever. See the driver’smanual.

T0008282

KOMP-FM-GBR 1:409

10 Driving

Kick-down.Kick-down is activated by pressing the ac-celerator pedal all the way down (position”B”). Kick-down will often result in alower gear being engaged so that the en-gine works at a higher speed. This ispossible in both economy and power pro-grammes but not in hold position.

T2012347

Position A = full throttlePosition B = kick down

1:410

Driving 11

Manual shiftingYou can select to drive only with manualshift or ”take over” from the automaticshifting system whenever necessary. Thegear lever is used like a normal gear leverexcept that there is no clutch pedal.

When engaging a gear, push the gear levergently towards the desired position.

Note! Do not press hard on the lever. Thegear will not be engaged any faster.

High/low splitOn the left-hand side of the gear lever is abutton for the manual selection of high/lowsplit. The splitter gear is changed immedi-ately when the spring-loaded button isreleased. The selected splitter gear is shownon the display. An up arrow indicates lowsplit and a down arrow indicates high split.

When the splitter gear and basic gear arechanged simultaneously, the split can bepre-selected by holding in the button andmoving the gear lever to the desired posi-tion.

High/low rangeHigh and low range is selected automati-cally by the system depending on the speedof the vehicle.

Note! When changing gear, the acceleratorpedal shouldnot be released.

KOMP-FM-GBR 1:411

12 Driving

Reverse/crawl gearsTo prevent reverse or crawl gears being en-gaged unintentionally, the gear lever has aresistance built in.

Reverse gearsThe gearbox has four reverse gears (rL, rH,RL, RH). The vehicle must be stationarybefore the reverse gear can be engaged.Moving the gear lever to position ”R” pre-selects the low range and low split (rL)whereby the reverse gear can only bechanged by using the button on the gearshaft.

Note! The vehicle must be stationary be-fore changing between low and high range. The splitter gear can be changed whiledriving, however.

T4014982

1:412

Driving 13

Crawl gearsThe gearbox has two crawl gears (cL andcH).

T4014983

KOMP-FM-GBR 1:413

14 Driving

• The vehicle can be kept still using theparking brake or trailer brake.

• Select a gear.

• Press the brake pedal.

• Release the brake once the clutchstarts to pull.

ClutchThe clutch is a ”dry plate clutch”, i.e. noconverter. Therefore, never allow the clutchto slip in high gear when pulling away. Theinformation lamp will come on and a sym-bol will appear on the display if the clutchoverheats.

T3014366

T3008835

DeclutchingIf a rapid declutching is desired, e.g. inslippery conditions, the gear lever shouldbe moved to neutral.

1:414

Driving 15

In case of gearbox malfunctionThe Geartronic system is equipped with alimp-home function that makes it possibleto drive a short distance if there is a faultin the gearbox or clutch position sensor.

Note! The limp-home function should onlybe used for short distances.

The functions are activated by simultane-ously pressing in button ”E/P” and movingthe gear lever to position 1.

The following functions are affected:

• automatic mode is not available

• only low split is available

• only low range is available

The following gears can be used:

Room Simulation (Model VR 400 Only)

You can select one of 5 acoustic settings,

simulating different listening environ-

ments and providing a variety of sound

qualities:

TALK: This mode limits the fre-

quency response and delays audio

from the rear speakers compared to

the front speakers. This effect is

very useful on AM talk radio

because it filters much of the noise

and moves the audio image for-

ward.

LIVE: Simulates the acoustics of

live musical performance in a larger

room.

AUDITORIUM: The same effect

as LIVE, but more pronounced,

giving the feeling of an even larger

room.

ARENA: Creates the effect of

being in a large arena.

DRIVER L or DRIVER R: The

sound from the driver side front

speaker is delayed with respect to

the passenger side front speaker,

creating the effect of shifting or

moving the audio image (for left

hand and right hand drive vehicles).

Weather BandThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA) of the U.S.

Department of Commerce provides con-

tinuous broadcasts of taped weather

messages. These messages are repeated

every 4 to 6 minutes and routinely

updated every 1 to 3 hours. Updates are

more frequent during severe weather.

Most NOAA weather stations broadcast

24 hours a day.

NOAA broadcasts on 7 channels. In

some areas, more than one broadcast

may be available. Select the broadcast

location closest to your location for the

best reception.

Note: The Weather Band option is only

available when the country chosen is

“Americas.” See the Country Frequency

Selection section.

Note: Severe weather condition broad-

casts are not automatically broadcasted

by these radios. You must have the

weather band selected to hear weather

condition information.

When the Weather band is selected, the

radio will display “WX” and a channel

number. The WX icon WX will also be

illuminated.

Longwave Band The longwave frequency band is a

European AM broadcast in the frequency

range of 153 to 279 kHz. It is only avail-

able when the European frequency band

has been selected.

stations, finding and stopping on the

next station that exceeds the sensitivity

level set.

To seek for a station in any tuner mode

(AM, FM, WX, LW):

the next higher or lower station on the

current band. The radio mutes as it

searches for the next station with a strong

signal. When it finds a station, the radio

stops seeking and the audio returns to

the original volume.

Seek Sensitivity - FM and AM(U.S. Frequency bands only)In FM and AM tuner modes, the sensi-

tivity of the Seek function can be adjust-

ed to stop at stations with weaker or

stronger signals. To adjust this sensitivity,

After selecting SEEK, you can also

rotate the VOLUME knob to scroll

between the settings.

After 5 seconds, the setting is saved and

the display returns to the default. The

“-2” setting will stop only on very

strong signals. The “+2” setting will stop

on weaker signals.

Scan

You can also scan for stations. During a

Scan, the radio searches for the next sta-

tion, pauses on it for a few seconds, and

then searches again for the next station.

RDS (Radio Data System)Features

RDS transmits additional information

encoded on an FM station’s regular sig-

nal. The RDS feature works only with

FM broadcast stations transmitting this

encoded information. RDS broadcast is

widely available in Europe, but less

common in North America.

RDS features include:

• Alternate Frequency switching

• Traffic Program announcements

• Program Type selections

• Radio Text

Alternate Frequency Switching(AF)With the AF feature, the radio automati-

cally switches to another station or fre-

quency, if available, that is broadcasting

the identical program materials as the

original station, when the original station

begins to fade. With AF turned on, you

can drive across a country or continent

while listening to the same program,

without retuning your radio.

To turn the AF feature on,

To turn AF off,

Note: AF networks are common in

Europe, but rare in the US.

Setting FM Memory (European programmed radio frequencies only)You can help the radio make faster Seeks

and AF switches to new frequencies by

using the FM Memory function. This

function searches for and stores the fre-

quencies of local RDS and non-RDS FM

stations in memory. The radio uses this

information so it can more quickly find

and switch to a stronger station when the

currently tuned station begins to fade or a

stronger signal becomes available.

Note: The stations stored using the FM

Memory function are separate from

stored FM Presets.

To manually activate the FM Memory

function and store local radio frequency

information, press and hold the AUTO

The radio also will automatically start an

FM Memory search any time you Seek a

TP station when AF is off, or Seek a TP

station when the radio is not tuned to an

RDS station.

Note: You can’t start an FM Memory

search while the radio is receiving a TP

broadcast.

The radio displays “MEMORY” and the

audio mutes as it seeks for and stores

FM station information.

Note: If TP is turned on when you start

the FM Memory function, the radio dis-

play will indicate “SEARCH” instead of

“MEMORY”.

The FM memory process typically takes

less than 30 seconds, but can take up to

several minutes, depending on the num-

ber and type of stations available. You

can cancel the FM memory search by

turning AF off or pressing and holding

the AUTO button.

To keep the stored FM Memory infor-

mation current, you should occasionally

repeat the FM Memory search to update

the information about local frequencies.

FM Memory information remains stored

until another FM Memory store function

occurs.

Traffic Program (TP)When the Traffic Program feature is

turned on and a traffic announcement is

received, the radio will automatically

interrupt the current mode to broadcast

traffic condition announcements that are

provided by some stations or networks.

Note: TP cannot be turned on in AM,

WX or LW mode.

If TP is turned on and the radio is not

tuned to a station broadcasting traffic

announcements, it will begin to SEEK a

station that broadcasts announcements.

The radio will display “SEARCH”.

During a Traffic Announcement, the

radio display shows “TRAFFIC”.

There are 3 TP icons that may be dis-

played:

TP – Current station can broadcast

traffic announcements, the function

is not enabled.

[ TP ] Flashing – Current station

can broadcast traffic announce-

ments, the function is enabled.

[ ] – The function is enabled, but

there are no stations/networks being

travels out of the broadcast area for

the station/network that was broad-

casting the traffic information.

liquid that is applied to cleaning pads

and scrubs the tape heads. To properly

clean your tape player, follow the

Safety instructions• Do not open the refrigerant circuit un-

der any circumstances• The refrigerator is not intended to be

used for the storage of corrosive mate-rial or solvents

• Never cover air ducts or ventilationopenings

• Defrost in good time when ice formsin the refrigerator

• Never use a sharp object to remove iceor objects which have frozen in posi-tion

• Never use a cleaning agent containingpolish, acid, lye or solvent

• When the refrigerator is scrapped anexpert must be consulted to recycle thecomponents

• The fast charger must only be con-nected to the vehicle battery when therefrigerator is disconnected

GeneralThe refrigerator contains a cold storagearea for storing drinks and foodstuffs whichrequire refrigeration. The temperature is ad-justed as required using a control panel

which is located in the door. Normal posi-tion is five lit blue LEDs which giveapproximately +6C in the cold storagearea at normal ambient temperatures.

Area of useThe refrigerator is designed to cool food-stuffs. If it is to be used to chill medicinesyou must check that it meets the special re-quirements for chilling medical products.

All the component materials in the coldstorage area are approved for contact withfoodstuffs. The refrigerant is Freon free

Switch on the refrigeratorHold the switch marked ”ON/OFF” (1) infor approximately 1 second. The greenLED (2) comes on and the compressorstarts. The compressor only starts if thebattery voltage exceeds 24.2 Volts. If thebattery voltage is lower the green LED (2)will start to flash. For further informationsee “Voltage switch” page 3.

Adjust the temperature by holding the tem-perature selector marked ”TEMP” (3). Theblue LEDs (4) come on one by one andstart from the beginning as long as the tem-perature selector is held depressed. Selectthe temperature by releasing the tempera-ture switch when the correct number ofLEDs are lit. The more blue diodes that arelit, the lower the temperature in the refrig-erator. Normal position is five lit blueLEDs which give approximately +6C inthe cold storage area at normal ambienttemperatures.

T0010488

Switch off the refrigeratorHold the switch marked ”ON/OFF” in forapproximately 1 second. The green LEDgoes out and the compressor stops. The re-frigerator must be carefully cleaned if it isnot to be used for some time. See“Cleaning” page 3. After cleaning the doormust be left wide open for at least 24 hoursso that all the moisture dries out and nobad odours occur.

2:246

3

Voltage switchIf the voltage is too low the compressorswitches off automatically to prevent deepdischarging of the battery. If the batteryvoltage is, or has been, too low the greenLED on the control panel flashes and thecompressor does not start. The voltageswitch trips at 22.8 V and restarts at

24.2 V. If the green LED flashes despite thevoltage being normal it means that the volt-age has previously been too low. In thiscase start the vehicle engine to create avoltage peak which will automatically resetthe voltage trip switch.

Tilting the cabThe refrigerator must be emptied of allcontents and switched off before the cab istilted

CleaningClean the refrigerator using a cloth withwarm water and normal washing up deter-gent. Ensure that no water penetrates the

gaskets or the switch. Dry off using a drycloth. Clean the refrigerator inside and outregularly or as soon as it becomes dirty.

DefrostingMoisture in the air can cause ice formationon the walls of the refrigerator whichcauses the cooling effect to deteriorate. De-frost in good time. Remove all foodstuffsand place them in another refrigerated envi-ronment so that they remain cold. Switchoff the refrigerator. Allow the door to standopen. When the ice melts most of the melt

water runs down the drainage hole which isfurthest in, in the centre of the refrigerator.Check that the drainage hole is notblocked. Then wipe up the remainder of thewater. Clean using a cloth, warm water andnormal washing up detergent. The refriger-ator is now ready for use.

Interior lightingThe refrigerator has interior lighting whichlights up automatically when the door isopened. The bulb is replaced by removing

the whole lighting unit by twisting to theleft. The bulb type is C5W 24V SV 8.5.

Fault-tracingIf the refrigerator does not function firstcheck that the voltage switch has nottripped. See “Voltage switch” page 3 for

corrective action. If the fault remains con-tact your Volvo dealer.

Central lubrication 1

Central lubricationThe central lubrication system automati-cally performs the lubrication that isotherwise carried out at the vehicle service. The advantages of this is that you get amore even lubrication at all locations andthe service occasions are fewer.

The lubrication is carried out while drivingwith an interval of 9 hours. If the vehiclehas been stationary more than 48 hours thelubrication is activated when the vehicle isstarted.

Manual lubricationThe central lubrication system can be acti-vated manually with a switch under thepump’s plastic casing on the main unit.

If uncertain about the function of the cen-tral lubrication system, check the centrallubrication system’s fuse and do the lubri-cation manually.

1 Start the engine.

2 Press in the switch under the plasticcasing on the central lubrication sys-tem’s main unit.

3 The pump motor should be then activefor approx. 2 minutes.

Filling up of lubricantImportant! It is extremely important thatthe right equipment and the correct greasequality are used when filling so that dirtdoes not get into the system.

Filling up is carried out via the nipple, un-der of the pump plastic casing on thecentral unit, with the tool intended for this.

Filling interval ..................... every six months or when the level of the greasehas decreased to the ”MIN” marking

Consistency of the grease1 .. NLGI 00 or NLGI 000

System volume

Tractor ........................... approx. 2.7 kg

Other ............................. approx. 6 kg

Operating InstructionsParticulate filter CRT

TM

Important! This vehicle is equipped with a particulate filter whichrequires that a fuel witha low sulphur content (less than 50 ppm = 0.005% sulphur)is used. Use of fuel with ahigher sulphur content or mixing in other fuel can destroy the particulate filter in a short time.

Normally it is not necessary to take into consideration the fact that the vehicle has a particu-late filter. Long periods of driving (several hours) with a low engine load or long periods ofidling can, however, cause problems in that the soot in the filter does not burn due to low ex-haust temperature.

The particulate filter greatly reduces the emission of particulates (PM), hydrocarbons (HC)and carbon monoxide (CO).

A proportion of the nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gases from the engine are convertedin the catalytic converter to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which helps to burn the soot particulateswhich are caught by the filter. The total content of NOx remains unchanged, but the propor-tion of NO2 increases.

NO2 can, in moderate concentrations, irritate the respiratory passages and aggravate asthma. However, the particulate filter does contribute to a considerably improved environment on ac-count of its capacity to considerably reduce the quantity of particulates, hydrocarbons andcarbon monoxide.

Important! The fact that the vehicle is equipped with a particulate filter does not mean thatit can be used in some other way than a vehicle without a particulate filter. The exhaust gasesare still not healthy to breathe in, i.e., make sure that there is ventilation when the vehicle isidling. An exhaust extractor hose must be connected to the exhaust opening if the engine isto be driven in an enclosed space.

Important! With each oil change the filter insert should be taken out, cleaned and turned.Contact a Volvo workshop for service.
