The most important thing that will stir your curiosity about the bygone era of
Wayanad may be the opinion of historians that organized human life existed in
certain parts of this land, at least ten centuries before Christ. Relics and edicts
found in various parts of Wayanad speak volumes of a rich pre-historic era.
Wayanad was ruled by the Rajas of the Veda tribe. After Tippu handed over the
entire Malabar region to the British after the Sreerangapattanam truce, Wayanad
saw historic encounters between the British and Kerala Varma Pazhassi Rajah of
Kottayam. Pazhassi Rajah waged a fierce war on the British with the help of
Kurichiya tribals from the wilderness of Wayanad. In the end, on the brink of
becoming a prisoner of his enemies, he committed suicide, and became a tragic
hero in the history of Wayanad.

(There are different versions about his death) The British authorities opened up
the plateau for cultivation of tea and other cash crops. Roads were laid across the
dangerous slopes of Wayanad, from Kozhikode and Thalassery. These roads were
extended to the cities of Mysore and Ooty through Gudalur. Later, through these
roads, people from various parts of Kerala migrated to this land, in search of
making a livelihood in this pristine land.
