C O M M U N I O The Christian Mass service is a living, breathing rite; a ritual that has its roots in the last supper in c.30AD, and that has developed organically over centuries into what is a piece of theatre as much as an act of devotion. In its current form, the service is such that the particular musical and rhetorical elements are arranged to create a sense of drama and climax as the Mass unfolds. This shape, and its different textual components, are the basis of our concert programme. From plainchant introit, through mass movements by the great composers of the Renaissance, to a creed which speaks to modern issues and a musical sermon which sets ancient oratory in contemporary musical language, Communio is a sequence that explores some of the greatest compositions of the last thousand years. Come with us to explore this remarkable ritual in the best way we know: through its music.

Plainchant – Rorate coeli Josquin des Prez – Pater Noster Thomas Tallis – In manus tuas

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina – Kyrie (from Missa Papae Marcelli) Alonso Lobo – Gloria (from Missa Maria Magdalene)

Orlandus Lassus – Domine Dominus noster Richard Rodney Bennett – The seasons of his mercies

Bob Chilcott – We are Maurice Duruflé – Ubi caritas

William Byrd – Ave verum corpus Jean Richafort – Sanctus and Benedictus (from Missa Pro Defunctis)

Max Reger – Das Agnus Dei Francis Poulenc – Quatre petites prières de Saint François d’Assise

Nico Muhly – To stand in this house (excerpt) Orlando Gibbons – Almighty and everlasting God

Cyrillus Kreek – Õnnis on inimene Plainchant – Rorate coeli

The programme is to be performed as a sequence, with one announcement at the beginning to explain the musical journey through a traditional Mass.

ROYAL BLOOD

Life in Tudor England was turbulent. Rich for its art, thought and science, but plagued by religious and social upheaval – in

no small part because of the erratic mind of the period’s foremost king, King Henry VIII. Royal Blood investigates his life and

his legacy, from music of his court in the early sixteenth century, then to his daughter Queen Elizabeth I and her love for

music, then further into the seventeenth century. By delving into the cultural psyche of that time and exploring music on

themes of life, death, health and love, we unravel the drama that characterised life at the mercy of some of England’s most

intriguing and unpredictable monarchs.
