Crtež-Jugooceanija

Skicama daje novu konstrukciju, novu mrežu i strukturu.

Drawing-Jugooceanija

Recent past and all the symbols of its economic power now remain in ruins, empty – close enough in time to still not be considered “history”, and yet far enough to be easily forgotten. In the abandoned corridors of the former Jugooceanija company (which was once the pride of Boka Kotorska, and is nowadays a thorn in its side), Ana Aleksić found a great number of documents and sketches that have become the basis for her Drawing-Jugooceanija, now presented at the Klub Gallery in the Contemporary Art Center of Montenegro.

What she found on the old, faded paper is the starting point for Ana’s work. The contents of the papers greatly dictate the approach Ana chooses for its further manipulation, while remaining open and allowing intuition to guide her hand. Still, the artist perceives paper as a large painted surface, with its letters and schematics as visual language elements. Sketches of ships and individual engines, mechanisms, and then spreadsheets, textual instructions and reports – these are just the basics of what she then upgrades, trying not to disturb the balance that is already in place.

She plays with the text and the gaps between the lines, there where she finds it. The letters on paper (seen as separate pictorial elements without a linguistic meaning, purely symbolic, almost geometric) leave empty spaces between them: room enough for her to breathe new pictorial life into them. The engine assembly instructions are complemented by a new drawing, one that imaginatively reveals new systems. Tables are used as reinforcements for new shapes, almost exclusively geometric. Sketches are given new constructions, new network and structure. Straight line represents the basis of Ana’s work, even when it is not drawn; when illuminated, wrinkled indigo papers, without any special intervention by the artist, reveal drawing lines in places of their breaks – lines that create depth by their own shadow.

The readings of the many-layered Drawing-Jugooceanija are complex. The clash of the old, the discarded and the irrelevant with the drawing and painting interventions of the artist creates works that, apart from historical testimony, are given a new purpose, the noblest of them all – the purpose of art.
