Dr. Sebastian Bürklein received his dental degree fromthe Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Münster,Germany in 2003. From 2006 to 2010, Dr. Bürklein worked inprivate practice and graduated as a specialist in oralsurgery. In 2009, he became a Certified Specialist inEndodontology of the DGET (German Society ofEndodontology & Dental Traumatology). Since

2010, he has been a co-worker of Prof. Dr. E. Schäferin the Central Interdisciplinary Outpatient Clinic atthe School of Dentistry of the University of Münster,Germany.

Dr. Bürklein has authored or co-authored multiplescientific peer-reviewed articles. He is a reviewer forthe International Endodontic Journal, Odontology,and ENDO—Endodontic Practice Today. In clinicalendodontics, his areas of special interest includeinstrumentation and endodontic surgery.

Dr. Gary Cheung is currently Professor andPostgraduate Programme Director in Endodontics, aswell as an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Dentistry atthe University of Hong Kong. He graduated with aBDS in 1985, and an MDS degree in ConservativeDentistry (with distinction) in 1987, both from HKU.Dr. Cheung received his endodontic training at theEastman Dental Institute, obtaining an MSc degreefrom the University of London in 1991, then foundedthe Hong Kong Endodontic Society in 1996, andcompleted his PhD study on the material scienceaspects of nickel–titanium instruments in 2006.

Professor Cheung holds several Academy and RoyalCollege fellowships, and also serves as the Supervisorof Training for the Specialty Board in Endodontics inHong Kong. His research interests include endodontictreatment outcomes, root canal instruments andmaterials, dentinal infection and microbiology, andregenerative endodontics. He runs an intra-muralprivate practice on a referral basis, lectures extensivelyabroad, and has published over 100 articles in SCI-indexed journals as well as several book chapters.

Dr. Markus Haapasalo, DDS, PhD, Fellow of Fellowof the Royal College of Dentists of Canada(Endodontics), received his dental degree from theFaculty of Dentistry at the University of Helsinki,Finland in 1978. From 1995 to 2004 he was a Professorof Endodontics in Oslo, Norway and since 2004 hehas been Professor and Chair of the Division ofEndodontics at the University of British Columbia(UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. He is also the Head ofthe Department of Oral Biological & Medical Sciencesat UBC.

Dr. Haapasalo has authored or co-authored over 150scientific peer-reviewed articles. He is the Editor-in-

Chief of Endodontic Topics, a former Associate Editorof the Journal of Endodontics, an Editorial BoardMember of the International Endodontic Journal,and the Editor of Visual Endodontics 2012 and VisualEndodontics for iPAD multimedia. In clinicalendodontics, his areas of special interest includeinstrumentation, biofilms, irrigation, persistentinfections, and resorptions. Dr. Haapasalo has receivedseveral teaching awards including the Louis I.Grossman International Award from the FrenchEndodontic Society in 2007. He is actively lecturing onendodontics worldwide.

Dr. Michael Hülsmann graduated with a degree inDentistry in 1980 from the University of Göttingen.In 1988, he received his doctoral degree, and in 1998,he received a PhD degree (Dr. med. dent. habil.).Since 1982, he has been working as a Senior Lecturerin the Department of Operative Dentistry at theDental Clinics of the University of Göttingen. Dr.Hülsmann was promoted to Professor in 2004. In1993, he received the Hans Genet Award from the

European Society of Endodontology and theNetherlands Society of Endodontology.

Dr. Hülsmann is a member of the German Society ofOperative Dentistry (DGZ), Chief-Editor of theGerman journal Endodontie (Quintessence), and amember of the ESE and the AAE. Dr. Anda Kfir graduated from the GoldschlegerSchool of Dental Medicine, Tel Aviv Universitywhere she also attended the Graduate Program inEndodontics. She has been on faculty at theDepartment of Endodontology since 1985, where sheis lecturing and teaching in the undergraduate andpostgraduate programs, and served as the DepartmentCoordinator from 2003 to 2012. Currently, Dr.Kfir serves as the Head of the Department ofEndodontology at Tel Aviv University and Director ofthe Endodontics Residency Program. Dr. Kfir was amember of the National Board of Endodontics from2003 to 2008 and again since 2010. She served asChair of the Israeli Endodontic Society from 2007 to2009, and is currently serving as a member of theScientific Council of the Israeli Dental Association.

Dr. Kfir has organized and presented courses andsymposia in the clinical and scientific aspects ofendodontology. She has lectured extensively atnational as well as international conferences, and haspublished many scientific papers in peer-reviewedjournals in addition to book chapters. Her mainscientific interests are focused on the three-dimensional structure of the root canal and the use ofcone beam computed tomography in endodontics.Another research focus is the treatment of flat andirregular canals. This has been addressed from boththe technological aspect, assessed by micro-computedtomography, and the microbiological aspect,investigating endodontic materials with sustainedantibacterial activity.

Prof. Zvi Metzger graduated from the HebrewUniversity School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem in1970. Since 1973 he has been on the faculty at the TelAviv University School of Dental Medicine, where heserved as Dean from 1987 to 1991. Prof. Metzger is aspecialist in Endodontics and was the Chairman of theNational Board of Endodontics in Israel. He isProfessor of Endodontology and Associate Professorof Oral Biology at Tel Aviv University.

Prof. Metzger was a visiting fellow at the NationalInstitute of Dental Research, NIH, Maryland (1978–1981) and a visiting professor at the University ofNorth Carolina at Chapel Hill (1995–1996). Heserved until recently as Chairman of the Departmentof Endodontology and Director of ResearchLaboratories at the Tel Aviv University School ofDental Medicine. He retains a private endodonticspecialist practice in Tel Aviv.

Prof. Metzger has published and lectured extensivelyin the fields of Oral Biology and Endodontics. Heserved on the Editorial Board of Endodontics andDental Traumatology, ENDO–Endodontic PracticeToday, and of the Endodontic Section of Oral SurgeryOral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology andEndodontics. Prof. Metzger currently serves on theScientific Advisory Panel of the Journal of Endodonticsand as a referee for the International EndodonticJournal. He was President of the Israeli Divisionof the International Association for Dental Research(1987), Chairman of the Israeli Endodontic Society(2000–2002), and is a recipient of the HonoraryAchievement Award of the Israel Dental Association(2003) for his contributions to dental research andeducation.
