Mr Brown thanked him and they started to walk there.

The fog was getting thicker with every minute but the stranger had no difficulty in finding the way. He walked along the street, turned down another, crossed a square and at last after about half an hour’s walk they arrived at the Houses of Parliament.

Dear Paul,How are you? Thank you for your letter. Last time I promised you to

tell about my school. So, this year I’m in the sixth form. We have got some new subjects,

for example Geography which I like very much, so we’ve got more les-sons every day. As I wrote last time we have lunch from 12 o’clock to 12.20. Some pupils eat in the canteen but I like bringing my own lunch because my mother makes great sandwiches.

Now we’ve got 5 or 6 lessons every day so we’ve got a lot of home-work and it takes us several hours to do it. Sometimes we have to sit up to write a composition, to prepare a report or to learn a poem by heart. As I like Ukrainian Literature I read a lot too.

I’m interested in foreign countries, their culture and peoples so the subject I like most is English. We have very interesting English lessons because our teacher trains us in different ways. We learn new words, dramatize texts and dialogues, discuss interesting things, do role-plays, listen to tapes and speak a lot. Our teacher usually supports us when we work in pairs and make up our own conversations.

Are things very different at your school?Best wishes,

Fred.

Baseball is an American game between two teams and is played on a field with a bat and a small white ball. Each team consists of nine play-ers. The teams take turns playing in the field and batting the ball. A base-ball game has nine “innings”. That means that every team plays in the field nine times and is “at bat” nine times. The object of the game is to score more “runs” than the other team. Only the team at bat can score runs. The team with the most runs at the end of nine innings wins.

Basketball is played on a court with a large orange ball. There are five players on each team. Each team moves the ball across the court by bouncing or “dribbling” it. The object of the game is to shoot the ball into the basket to score a point. The team with the most points wins.

Football is a field game between two teams, played with an oval-shaped ball. Each team consists of eleven players, who carry, throw, or kick the ball. The quarterback starts by throwing, or passing, the ball to one of the players, called a receiver. The receiver tries to run with it to-wards the goal. The players of the other team try to prevent him from reaching the goal line. The team with the most points wins.

Soccer is a field game between two teams, played with a white round ball. The goalkeeper is the only one who can touch the ball with his or her hands. The other players are only allowed to kick the ball or bump it with their heads. The object of the game is to kick the ball past the goal-keeper into the goal. The team with the most points or goals wins.

The History of the olympic GamesThe first games which later called “the Olympics” were held about

a thousand years before our era.In those times numerous states on the territory of modern Greece

often waged wars. The ruler of one of these wanted to live in peace and he decided to organized athletic games.

From that time all the games were held every four years in Olympia. All wars were stopped. Best athletes arrived from many Greek states to Olympia to compete in running, long jumps, throwing of discus and javelin and wrestling. Fist fighting (boxing) and chariot races were in-cluded in the Games. Only men could take part in the Olympics. Women were not allowed anywhere near them.

All the athletes took an oath that had been preparing well for the Games, promised to compete honestly and keep the rules of the sacred Olympics. Winners were called “olympionics”. They were awarded olive wreaths and cups of olive oil.

The Olympic Games were accompanied by arts festivals. Singers sang hymns, poets recited poems, orators made speeches — all this in honor of the sacred Games.

3. readingRead the text and answer the Yes / No questions.

decemberThe name December comes from the Latin word “decem” which

means “ten”. In our calendar today, December is the twelfth month of the year. But in old Roman calendar, before Julius Caesar, it was the tenth month. The Anglo-Saxons called it Mid-winter month.

December is the month of snow and ice, the month of short and dark days. On December 22nd, we have the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The sky is pale, grey and has low clouds. Snowflakes fall from the grey sky and we say: “It’s snowing”. or: “It’s snowing heavily” or: “There’s a heavy snowfall”. When snow covers the ground you have a good chance to see tracks of animals.

December is both the end of the year and the start of the winter. It is known as the frosty gates of winter. It cools the earth and makes it pos-sible to use sleighs.

Does December come from modern language?1) Is it the last month of the year now?2) Was it the twelfth month long ago?3) Does it have short days?4) Is the sky bright?5) Can we see snowflakes in December?6) Can we find animals easily when the ground is covered with snow?7) Is December the start of the year?8) Is it frosty enough to use sleigh?9)

the questions.— Hello! I’m Julia.— I’m Karina.— And we are friends!— How do you like my hat?—...and my feathers?— Aren’t we charming?!— Today we have a cool holiday, Thanksgiving Day.— Join us and let’s celebrate it together.— But at first we’d like to tell you some words about this holiday.— Maybe someone doesn’t know why these Americans like eating

turkey in November.— Imagine a day set aside for families to come together from near

and far to feast and feel thankful for all that they have…— and you’ve got Thanksgiving Day in the United States.— Some families take part in religious ceremonies in the morning…— __ but for most families the highlight of the day is Thanksgiving

dinner.— This custom began with the Pilgrims in 1621. They were mem-

bers of the English Separatist Church.— Yeah, a Puritan sect. They had very strict moral standards and

thought that pleasure was unnecessary.— So, they decided to leave the country in search of religious free-

dom.— In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Ply-

mouth harbor in England and sailed west.— There were 102 passengers on the board and it took them 66 days

to reach North America.— And at last in November 1620 they landed. But the first winter

was very hard for the colonists. Half of them died.

— But with the help of the native Indians, who taught them how to fish, hunt and plant corn, their chances for surviving the winter of 1621 looked much better.

— After a successful harvest the Pilgrims decided to hold a special Thanksgiving feast and invited the Indians.

— The Indians brought deer meat, turkeys, cranberries and even popcorn.

— The original Thanksgiving lasted three whole days …— … and can you believe that all that food was prepared by three

women!— This holiday didn’t celebrate every year at first and didn’t have

the exact day.— But in 1864 Abraham Lincoln established the last Thursday in

November as a day for all Americans to give thanks.

The first of January, New Year’s Day, is a national holiday in Great Britain. People don’t go to work on this day. They send cards and give presents. Although it is not as widely observed as Christmas. Some peo-ple just ignore it, but others celebrate it in one way or another.

The most common type of celebration is a New Year party. People usually have parties and dances with their relatives and friends. At mid-night in London they go to Trafalgar Square. In this square there is a large New Year tree on which there are many little coloured lamps. The people of Norway send a great New Year tree to the English people every year. When Big Ben, the largest clock in London, begins to strike twelve, the people in Trafalgar Square take hands and sing the Scottish song “Auld Lang Syne” by Robert Burns. The song is about old days and friend ship between people. After that they wish one another a Happy New Year and go home to see the New Year in with more games and songs.

Pantomimes are plays put on before Christmas, usually for children. They are based on fairy tales, such as Cinderella or Aladdin, and mix comedy, song and dance.

Christmas Day is observed on the 25th of December. On Christmas Eve everything is in rush. People get ready to see the holiday. They de-corate their homes, arrange Christmas cards on shelves and tables and hang a bunch of mistletoe under which the boys kiss girls. They are busy cooking a turkey and baking Christmas pudding. Children wake up early to find a stocking full of small presents on their bed. Other presents, opened when everyone is together, are arranged around the Christmas tree.

Boxing Day, on the 26th of December, is the day when people visit their friends, go for a drive or long walks or just spent it in front of the TV recovering from Christmas Day.

In Scotland and the North of England people go first footing on New Year’s morning. They call at friends’ houses, trying to be the first per-son through the door after midnight. To symbolize good luck, the visi-tor carries a piece of coal and a glass of water. The luckiest type of first footer is a tall, dark man.

On New Year’s Day people make New Year’s resolutions. They de-cide to do something to improve their lives. For example, people decide to give up smoking or to go to the gym once a week.

Christmas in Australia is not like anywhere else! Everything is top-sy-turvy since December is one of the hottest months of the year. But the Australians have a great time anyway. Those who live near the coast go to the beach on Christmas day. They have a swim, play cricket or vol-leyball, surf or just sit around with family and friends enjoying Christ-mas dinner. Santa Claus arrives at Australian beaches on a surfboard — quite a change from sliding down a chimney! And since the weather is hot he often wears a swimsuit or funny baggy shorts.

Christmas in Australia is also celebrated in a fun way on the 25th of July. This ‘cold Christmas’ is usually just another excuse for a get-togeth-er with friends and family, but it’s becoming more and more popular!

Holidays are especially rich in old traditions and are different in Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England. Christmas is a great English na-tional party, and in Scotland it is not kept at all, except by clerks in banks; all the shops and factories are working. But six days later, on New Year’s Eve the Scotch begin to enjoy themselves. All the shops and factories are closed on New Year’s Day. People invite their friends to their houses and “sit the Old Year out and the New Year in”. When the clock begins to strike twelve, the head of the family goes to the front door, opens it wide and holds it until the last stroke. Then he shuts the door. He has let the Old Year out and the New Year in. Now greetings and small presents are offered.

New words: nostrils — ніздрі, a bill — дзьоб.

KiwiSometimes you can see a living emblem. One of such “emblems” is

the kiwi, a very unusual bird found only in some parts of New Zealand. It has no tail, almost no wings, and its nostrils are situated near the end of its bill which is used to find food.

The kiwi lives in thick forests and prefers to spend its time in the dark.

Although the kiwi weighs only a little over two kilogrammes, it has a very good appetite. It can eat as many as three hundred worms a day, which are its main food.

The female kiwi lays only one egg, but it is a very large egg — it is about one-fifth of her own weight. After laying it, she loses all interest and leaves her husband to hatch the egg. This takes seventy-five days and by the time the chick is hatched father kiwi has usually lost one-third of his normal weight.

In some English-speaking countries New Zealanders are known as Kiwis, because the bird is also the symbol of the people of New Zealand.
