The following are some notable tourism and heritage sites in Tshwane. Cullinan has special mention as almost the entire node can be considered a tourism destination.

1. Sammy Marks Museum

The 48 room colonial mansion, known as Zwartkoppies Hall was the residence of magnate Sammy Marks and dates back to 1884. This Victorian residence is unique since the house and interior is preserved and authentic.

Today the house is a museum .

(SA Places, see http://www.places.co.za)

2. Diamond Hill War Memorial

This is the site of graves of British and Canadian troops who died in the Anglo Boer War.

3. Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum

This active 1880 farmstead museum include:

An old farm yard, indigenous domesticated animals kept here.

House Museum, and 1880 house, blacksmith and wagon shed.

Exhibition Centre, showing the development of agriculture and housing a large collection of farm implements and animal drawn vehicles

Mampoer distillery

Education programmes

Camping facilities

Picnic facilities (Dinokeng Tourist Guide. See http://www.cullinanmeander.co.za)

The earliest history of the farm traces back to 1859.

The farm Kaalfontein was given by Willem Wragtig to his eldest son Lang Willem. In 1898 the Anglo Boer War broke out. Lang Willem and his two sons were “bittereinders” and Cornelia, Willem’s wife was sent to the Howik concentration camp. The farm house was partly burnt down but the family rebuilt it after the war. Willem Petrus Prinsloo moved to the Transvaal during the Groot Trek. HE is one of the 4th generation Prinsloos. The Prinsloo family became a well known family with interesting history.

(Gauteng Tourism. See http://www.gauteng.com)

4. Italian Prisoner of War Memorial

Between 1941-1945, the biggest concentration of Italian Prisoners of War, over 90 000, who were captured in North Africa, were housed in South Africa at Zonderwater Prison. During this period the army took over the village and even the golf course was used to pitch tents on.

Among the prisoners of war were musicians, craftsmen and artists who painted eight murals during 1942 in the old Recreation Club Hall.

These 3mx4m mural paintings depicted South African and British scenes of historical interest. These paintings may have been copied

Page 9: ANNEXURE 1: RESTRUCTURING ZONES - Tshwane City has identified 8 restructuring zones. ... Rietfontein ... the Premier Mine was originally part of the “Cornelius Minnaar Farm”,

from photographs or post cards, as most are copies of well known artists such as Erich Mayer and WH Coetzer.

After the war ended in 1945, many Prisoners of War elected to stay on in South Africa, though only 30 000 were eventually permitted to remain.

(Dinokeng Tourist Guide. See http://www.cullinanmeander.co.za)

About 264 prisoners were buried in the Italian Military Cemetery outside Cullinan. An annual service is held on the first Sunday of November to commemorate the prisoners who died. SA Airforce, Department: Defence Republic of South Africa. (See http://www.af.mil.za)

5. Premier Mine

The Premier Mine was registered in 1902 and prospecting started immediately. By 1904 the mine employed more than 2 000 people. On 25 January 1905 a diamond with the mass of 3 106 carats was found and the history of the Cullinan Diamond began. It is the largest gemstone ever found and two of the stones cut from the diamond are found in the British Crown Jewels.

(Dinokeng Tourist Guide. See http://www.cullinanmeander.co.za)

6. Onverwacht

The community of Onverwacht are descendants from freed Malay slaves who arrived with the Malan “na-trek” in 1857. They intermarried with mainly Pedi people. The land was given to them by President Paul Kruger for their assistance during the Anglo Boer Wars (Dinokeng Tourist Guide. See http://www.cullinanmeander.co.za).

7. Bloemendaal Historical Farm

Italian Prisoners of War living on the farm during World War II, created lovely stonework, cement sculptures and buildings which can still be seen today. (Dinokeng Tourist Guide. See http://www.cullinanmeander.co.za)

8. KoMjekejeke Ndebele Cultural Site

History suggests that in the late 1500 a Ndebele settlement immediately north of Pretoria was found under the ruler Musi. A succession struggle under Musi’s sons resulted in two main tribal categories, Ndzundza and Manala. The Manala chiefdom settled in 1873 on land provided by the Berlin Mssion, some 30 kilometers north of Pretoria at a place called KoMjekejeke (Wallmannsthal).

9. Bronkhorstspruit War Memorial

10. Kgodwana Ndebele Traditional Village

Reconstruction of Ndbele dwellings, exhibitions of arts and crafts and demonstrations of beadwork and weaving can be seen.

Symbolic locations have to be chosen very carefully as symbolic elements to be placed/erected on these locations are meant to retain their historical, cultural, aesthetical, emotional and other value for generations to come. The criteria for identifying these locations include the following:

natural prominence and visibility of the site

prominence, visibility and monumentality of the site due to the layout and the position of other city structuring elements

historical relevance of the site

views (vistas) from the site

beauty of the setting

accessibility

natural and ecological considerations

proximity of other symbolic locations; and

appropriateness of the broader context.

Landmarks are conspicuous natural features and man-made structures. They mark place and thereby reinforce the spatial structure of the city and its legibility. Gateways are features of the natural topography which, in combination with major entrance/exit routes, announce arrival into the city or its distinct parts. The existing man-made landmarks include the Telkom tower (Lukas Rand), Union Buildings, UNISA complex, Voortrekker Monument, CSIR complex, Hospital precinct, Old Power Station (Pretoria West), Power Station (Rooiwal), Sizani Cultural Village and the most intensely built-up central area (Inner City).

Major natural landmarks include the entire Magaliesberg, Meintjieskop, Daspoortrand, Schurweberg/Kwaggasrand, Bronberg, Strubenkop, and Pyramid Koppies (Onder-stepoort), Bronkhorstspruit Dam.

Major gateway elements of Tshwane include the following:

the particularly scenic entrance at the Fountains Valley

the N1 in the vicinity of the CSIR and UP Experimental farm

the ‘poort’ at the National Zoological Gardens

the ‘poort’ at the water purification works adjacent to DF Malan Drive; and

Page 11: ANNEXURE 1: RESTRUCTURING ZONES - Tshwane City has identified 8 restructuring zones. ... Rietfontein ... the Premier Mine was originally part of the “Cornelius Minnaar Farm”,

the ‘poort’ through the Magaliesberg adjacent to the Wonderboom Nature Reserve.

Sites suitable for future landmarks features include the following:

sites at all major entrances into the city e.g. southern entrance into Nelson Mandela Drive (inner city); eastern end of Church Street / Pretorius Street (Hatfield); Western end of Church Street (Pretoria West); northern end of Paul Kruger Street / Mansfield Avenue (Mayville); northern end of Voortrekker Road / HF Verwoerd Drive (Wonderboom South)

Hospital Hill, Riviera

Magaliesberg, at the crossing of Voortrekker Road.

11. Cullinan

Cullinan, named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, bears the distinction of being the site of discovery of the world’s largest diamond. Cullinan and the Premier Mine was originally part of the “Cornelius Minnaar Farm”, Elandsfontein 85, registered in 1859. A portion of the farm was sold to Willem Prinsloo in 1896 which was later sold to Thomas Cullinan and the mining company was registered as Premier Syndicate in 1902 and later that year as The Premier (Transvaal) Diamond Mining Company Ltd. A number of historical buildings are still to be found in the town of Cullinan. (Dinokeng Tourist Guide. See http://www.cullinanmeander.co.za).
